I dont understand the 5-star reviews for Sushi Yama. Its simply OK. The setting is typical tiny strip mall Japanese/sushi bar as is the quality. Ive worked and lived in Middletown for 13 years and Ive been there twice in once for a work lunch shortly after they opened and remember being happy I wasnt paying. I love Japanese food, especially sushi, but Ill drive an extra 30 minutes for better fare when I have a hankering for Japanese in the future. My wife and I went there last week on a quiet Tuesday evening based on her suggestion. I checked the reviews and it looked like it was worth another try. I was wrong. The service was a bit slow and inattentive, though staff was plentiful and there were plenty of empty tables. My wife ordered the seafood tempura which should have been hotter (her complaint) and the batter a bit heavy and greasy from the piece I tried. I ordered the Sushi Deluxe and while the fish seemed fresh and tasty, the rice didnt quite have the right texture or flavor. The tuna roll was tiny, tough and light on the tuna. It was a fairly dissatisfying experience for both of us and the last time well be eating there.

Im usually on the lenient side when it comes to reviews being a small business owner. I mostly frequent Sushi Yama in Middletown, but wanted to try a different place.....too bad I made this decision. My order was to go..... I ordered a Mexican Roll and received a regular California Roll for 9$ I was given no chop sticks,two half a cups of soup, two skimpy salads. Along with the lack of soup and salad I literally and figuratively received a shot glass of soy, a thimble of Wasabi. Since I was disappointed from the outset, I checked the ginger and to no surprise I received 8 pieces of ginger for 20 pieces of Sushi. At 67.50 for the dinner, I cant believe the skimping that was done. To add insult to the lackluster meal, the sushi and rice were not very fresh. I would give a zero, if the rating system allowed for this.

I had the worst experience ever. They sat us down took a drink order none of the drinks came out at the same time, left us sit longer before taking our food order. They then brought our soup well at least half of us the other half waited another 20 minutes, then half the food came out and was getting cold because our friends wanted to wait so we all could eat....and the most horrible sushi I have ever tasted. I do not recommend this place to anyone.

The food is amazing. This is definitely a place I go to often. Anytime I pass through Middletown I have to order something to go, and Im down that way quite often. The dynamite roll is my favorite. The people are very friendly and they make sure you have everything you need. The prices are also very good. If ever you come through Middletown this is definitely the place to stop.

I love the sushi here! Fish is properly sliced, rice is cooked and seasoned perfectly. Good kitchen and sushi appetizers. I highly recommend any of the special items like the live scallop, Aji, orange clam, uni, or abalone. However, I have only given four stars due to the service being somewhat slow sometimes.

Worst service. Waited a half hour to take orders. Almost an hour for entrees. On a wednesday night which was not even busy. Sushi was just OK..rice was hard almost like it sat for a couple of days. I could have been fine if the service was not terrible. I would rate this place zero on a scale of 1-10

Staff is very nice. Frequently order take out sushi from here. They are nice even if you come in to have a meal when they are about to close. Sushi is very reasonably priced, miso soup is a little salty to me. No other complaints. Sushi chefs are also nice.

My all time favorite place to go for sushi. Nanos of annapolis runner up. Never ordered a single thing that wasnt amazing. Been going here for 5+yrs, familiar staff with every visit. Fri/sat fresh scallop served, definitely recommend.

Ive never given a review about a restaurant before but this place is really good. Take your wife or girlfriend out and try to take on the "Love Boat". It is a little pricey but so worth it... Cant wait for my next outing there!

Good was good, service was not so great. Took 20 mins for them to take our order and another 50 mins for us to get our sushi. We had to inhale our food to make it on time too a movie that we had set out 2 hours just for dinner.

Highly recommend that if you plan to try to eat here you make reservations. The establishment is quite small and wait times on a Friday are poor. Didnt bother to wait for a table to even try the food.

The moment we sat down we were presented with hot towels for our hands. This was the highlight of the meal. The staff was very friendly and attentive. However, the sushi was just okay.

This place is spectacular and prices are reasonable.... Ive had sushi all over the US and to me this place was almost as good as Nobu in NYC!!! Definitely try the rock shrimp tempura!!!

This is by far the BEST sushi Ive ever had!!! I got sushi for myself and a friend... she had the spider roll and I had 4 pieces of ebi sushi. Id love to eat in next time!
