I had read that 1861 was a good restaurant, and as we were going to Middletown for a show at The Everett, Diane and I gave it a try. I rang to book, and the office wasnt open; they rang me back to confirm, well in time for us to drive the 90 minutes to Middletown. On arrival we were made to feel very welcome, and the management had purchased flowers for our able; in honour of our occasion. The menu was sufficiently varied, but we both decided on the Smoke-house selection; adding the Apple Cocktail to it. The Cocktail was refreshing and true to its description; the smoke-house meats delicious. We had a cupcake for dessert, which topped the meal off nicely. All told, the service was very good, the meal very tasty, and all in time to make the show. Our thanks to 1861 management and staff for a very pleasant start to our evening.

Went last night because I had purchased a Groupon certificate. I had the crab cakes, and my husband had the cheeseburger and french fries. My dinner was delicious. My husband ate every bit of his burger and we both feasted on the French fries. They were beyond good. The truffle mayo put them over the top. They were cooked to perfection and they were the best fries I have ever eaten! I am looking forward to going back, as I believe we will be regulars. We live in Middletown. Lucky us! The only drawback was the noise. There was a large crowd there, and they were very noisy. Our server, who is married to one of the owners, told us that it was not normally like that, so that will not deter us.

Difficult to see at night as its the basement of a building whose main entrance is a spa. Very limited parking by bldg; however, can park in the mini-mall lot across the street and there is a designated cross-walk (though it could really use a light post). Entrance is around the rear of the building, was a huge welcome surprise when we walked in. Modern yet warm decor. Really cool lower seating level near a fireplace. Food was very good...try the chicken & waffles. When we went there it was obvious they were bringing in some live music and overhearing them talking it appears theyre looking to expand their live music scene. We went with two kids.

Weve been here a few times now and really enjoyed it. Charming little underground location with "wine cellar chic" decor, lots of stone and dark wood and fireplaces. Limited parking in their lot, but ample street parking. Delicious, reasonably priced fine American cuisine, classy cocktails, nice beer and wine selection, great service. If they got rid of their flat screen TVs itd be perfect! We first visited as part of a wine & cheese event with the local cheese shop, Fromage, then came here for a special occasion dinner in February, and well be back!

Jasper is a fantastic restaurateur who cares about what he puts out, and the reaction of those consuming it. I love going to 1861 for drinks and dinner, its a really warm atmosphere made better by good service and food. Sometimes being a local has its benefits, try it out, you wont be disappointed!

1861 had good food and ambiance. Weve been there a couple times and have been impressed each time. Our servers have been great and they provide an appropriate amount of food. Our only complaint is there is not enough parking in the lot so you may have to park on the street.

What a treat! Traveling through and found this gem among the strip malls. Location is very unassuming but ambiance is great inside. Crab cakes, chix & waffles were great!
