My wife and I went there expecting a nice meal on a weekday night. The place was a bit crowded, but the greeter seated us outside right away, so we were happy. We put our orders in, and things went downhill from there. A good hour passed without our appetizer arriving. The waitress finally admitted that because of a wine tasting, the kitchen was "backed up". We were starving at this point, and requested some bread to help tide us over, and we asked her to find out how much longer it would be before the dinner was ready. Another 15 minutes passed and the greeter brought out our appetizer. We were so excited to have something to eat I forgot to ask her about the bread. Our waitress was standing at another table for the past 10 minutes flirting with a couple of guys. We were not happy. We had shared a small appetizer, so we were still very hungry, and no sign of dinner. Other people around us were complaining to the greeter, whom I found out now was the manager. Our waitress was still flirting; the manager actually took a dirty plate out of her hands to bring it inside, but did not say anything to her. No bread, no ETA for dinner. Finally I had enough and asked the greeter for the manager, which is when she revealed that she was indeed the manager. I told her about the bread and ETA requested from the waitress (who as chance should have it was back flirting with the guys again in front of her manager). She apologized but appeared completely frazzled. We asked why we werent told of the wine tasting and kitchen backup when she seated us, and she replied she thought the kitchen could handle the load. More time passed, then the manager came out to let us know our dinner was being plated, and brought us a small basket of bread which we devoured in seconds. It must have been at least 2 hours since we ordered that the food finally arrived. We were so upset at the horrible service that neither of us could enjoy our meals; we were just so hungry we needed to eat. The food was probably good, but as I said couldnt be enjoyed. They took the appetizer a round of drinks off the bill, but that didnt make up for anything. Oh, and the manager served our dinner, because the waitress was still flirting with the guys. Manager said nothing to her. Clearly they are unable to handle the # of tables they have, and need to reduce them, or hire more help for the kitchen, and hire waitresses who actually wait tables instead of pursuing their personal love interests. They also need a manager who is capable of managing their staff efficiently, and who has the comprehension to realize that people are going to be upset if they have to wait hours for food. She should have personally visited every table when this became clear to her, apologized, and offered something complementary to tide people over. Wow, that would have gone a long way to salvaging a horrible dinner! Maybe then we could have gotten the scraps of bread an hour sooner. But seriously, maybe a cup of soup, something already prepared that would be easy to bring out, anything, to make it up to the customers. Taking a few items off the bill was pointless to me, because dinner was already ruined. Showing some initiative and providing some unasked for appetizers would have demonstrated leadership and innovation to save a bad situation they shouldnt have gotten into in the first place. Instead, they lost us as customers, and we will make sure we post this review everywhere to warn other potential diners of the pitfalls at eating at the State Street Grill. PS - I hope the waitress got a phone #, because she certainly didnt get a tip from us.

Yesterday was my first experience at State Street Grill. Its a lovely place from the inside out with a sophisticated style and very intimate seating for customers. The prices range from $3.95 for salads to less than $20 throughout the Dinner menu but youre definitely getting a bang for your buck. The Risotto Rounds (panko crusted risotto balls, shaved parmesan, resting in a pool of tomato artichoke soup) for $6.95 were absolutely delicious. A nice crispiness on the outside and evenly cooked ingredients on the inside. The soup complimented the parmesan well and Im not even a fan of tomatoes but Id definitely eat this again. I also ordered the Fig Flat Bread at $10.95 (rosemary fig jam, honey cream, caramelized onion, sliced green apple, sprinkled with spiced walnuts, chunks of creamy gorgonzola, fresh arugula, and topped with thinly slice prosciutto). Not only was this the best flatbread Ive come across, but Im a true believer now. Ale Marys in downtown Scranton is no longer my favorite place for flat breads! Everything was baked nicely into the bread with finishes on top and every bite had a pop. I will definitely be a returning customer. The waitress Maria made the experience even better. She was very attentive, very knowledgeable on the menu and could make quick recommendations. [All lists of ingredients were in reference to the online menu. I couldnt remember everything off the top of my head :) ]

Food stinks...got a sandwich w stale bun...asked server and she said she was sorry but the kitchen was overwhelmed tonight....thats it didnt even offer new food...just walked away.....also when we got our beer tab they charged for the wrong beer..they charged for a more expensive beer on tap....when I asked the barmaid she said they didnt have a button on the computer for the beer i was drinking????? Come on I wasnt born yesterday.. And why did they charge for a more expensive beer??? She got defensive with me and said if its that big of a deal Ill refund you the difference......like I was wrong for questioning her.....Tried tp contact the owner next day through phone and e-mail....never got a responce.....what does that tell ya....DO YOURSELF A FAVOR.....GO SOMEWHERE ELSE....

I know business was slow, but... the food took forever - so long that instead of sending back my (very)well done burger for the medium/rare one that I ordered, I only pointed it out and got on with my meal. However, no apology, not even an acknowledgement - just a "hmm". As a medium burger, all I can say is "eh, it is indeed a burger". I had stopped in for a beer on the way home with friends another time, and based my experience on that - perhaps pouring beer is their thing, and not so much food? I am always on the lookout for the next great burger place - guess I"ll keep looking. Three were complaints from others in our party as well - enough to cross this place off the list of places to try a second time.

For the past two years this has been the spot of choice! I came online to see what others had thought about the service in the past couple of months, and I am glad that Im not the only one disappointed. We were sat at 7:15 and didnt receive dinner until 9. My cup of soup alone took an hour. Worst of all, It was a Wednesday night! It was disappointing because I really love going there, especially in the summer. I have no idea what has happened in the past month, but whatever it is NEEDS to be fixed.

Being an NYC Food Snob and new to this small town PA area, I was very surprised... but I really enjoyed it here. I like to eat outside, and that is hard to find. It reminded me of NYC except we were not eating outside on the streets, but instead, with the Bees and the Trees. I liked the Wine selection too. The food is also really yummy. I will def be back, and I am relieved to say I can take my NY friends here without being embarrassed. :)
