I used to love On the Border. Their food was always so good. I haven’t eaten at one in such a long time, so I was happy to find one close to my hotel. Unfortunately, my visit to this On the Border (1519 Silas Deane Hwy, Rocky Hill, CT 06067) was so disappointing. When I went in, I was greeted by the host, a kid with a very indifferent attitude. I asked to place a to-go order, and he replied, "Follow me", then led me to the back where one places and picks up to-go orders. This kid, the host, wasn’t altogether rude, he just seemed so disinterested, very aloof. He definitely didn’t make me feel good about being there. The To-Go host, another kid, looked at me as if she had been waiting on me for some time. I told her I wanted to place an order, and she asked, "What do you want?" When I asked if I could see a menu, she simply pointed at a stack of menus tucked behind the register. I must have had a look of disbelief on my face while I searched for the closest exit, because she eventually picked up one of the menus and tossed it in my direction. I closed the menu and gave it back to her explaining that I would be going somewhere else for my dinner. She responded with an all too telling, "Uh!" I was looking forward to eating there again, but I’m glad I was convinced not to. I am sure if this is how the host/hostess act and treat the customers, the "back of the house" cannot be any better. It was obvious from these two that management at this On the Border doesn’t care about repeat customers. I only hope they are a little more concerned with food safety than they are with customer satisfaction.

I like this place. I really do. But something needs to be said about the attentiveness or amount of care put in to their food. One of my favorite items on their menu is the Firecracker Stuffed Jalapenos. They are just delicious. EXCEPT for when they are undercooked, as I end up getting a mouthful of uncooked flour in my mouth. The staff always seems semi-apologetic for the misunderstanding, and we go from there. But Im currently sitting in the bar area here, and sent them back for the same issue twice. The second time they were worse than the first. Borderline inedible, which is definitely not what I want when I come here. I love Mexican food, and I live very close to this place. As I said, I enjoy coming here. But On the Border employees, if youre reading this, PLEASE pay more attention to things like this. Its happened on more than one visit now, and while I am usually generous in giving multiple chances for mistakes like this, my patience is wearing thin.

As a prior server for this place, my review may be considered biased, but at the same time, I want to let you all know that I continue to eat here often. Knowing what to look for when stuff isnt right, I can tell you that every time Ive been in, I continue to observe good cleanliness habits, consistency in presentation, consistency in food quality, and friendly service. OTB has a very generous happy hour drink and food menu. Say hi to Sam, Freddy, and Krissy in the bar, they are happy to serve and get to know you. They have the best fresh made chips in the area. Many offerings can be altered if you are a vegetarian, and the produce is always fresh. I lament the deletion of the flautas from the menu, for over a decade thats been my favorite item. But try the new mini-chimichangas, they are hand made in house! Ill be back soon to get my queso fix!

I understand that many servers arent motivated when they see a sole diner....but at 3pm on a Friday (ie dead) I expect a server to greet me promptly and at least take a beverage order. I waited and waited. Finally, a manager approached and asked if I had been served. Why, no, not yet. He took my order quickly and apologized profusely. Meanwhile, the server walks by and quite literally dropped the bowl of chips on the table and gave me a filthy look. Uh, dude? Not my fault. Very disgusted with servers like that....makes me feel like he spit in my food. I used to work in a restaurant so I get what its like to be on the other side of the table. This behavior shouldnt be tolerated by management, however, as there are many people who would love to have a job.

This is bottom barrel retail mexican food. If youre accustomed to dining in West Hartford, this will be a complete let down. The drinks had 0 alcohol.....and we even paid an extra 3 dollars per drink to have patron in them. Does management charge these poor bar tenders if they over pour or something? I can not stress the fact that this is worse than any other retail mexican Ive ever been to. Please go to Plaza Azteca, Besitos, Puerto Vallarta. If you want authentic mexican go to Coyote Flaco in Hartford. The waitress was attentive though, no complaints there.

I recently was invited to dinner for a baby shower at this location. I have been to other Mexican Restaurants before, so I am familiar with the menu. This was a Friday afternoon, and it was extremely busy. So busy in fact that food and drinks did take longer than desired. However late they were, the food and drinks were wonderful. I ordered a classic margarita and the chicken quesadilla. I would go to this restaurant again. Perhaps not this location at such a busy time however.

The food they serve here is just barely edible. I could easlily make better mexican cuisine in my own home. The staff was nice and the atmosphere is good for when you just want to sit at the bar. But since it is a restaurant, the food counts more than anything and the food was awful. The chips and the salsa is the best food you will get and I have tried to eat there a few times and every visit is a regretted one

Great happy hour specials and solid Mexican dishes. The decor inside is pretty nice. Its right across from the on ramp to 91, so getting in and out is a breeze. Ive eaten multiple times in the main dining area as well as the 3 season porch area near the front of the building. All have been positive experiences. Happy Hour drink specials were really good!

Loud atmosphere. Ive had awful, terrible, no good service the past two times Ive been there. The last server hit on my significant other and then completely ignored me and my empty water while bringing him 4 refills on soda. And then she disappeared after our food came. We ended up waiting 45 minutes for our check. Ill never go back.

I was staying nearby so I decided to get some food and I was really excited to try it because the food smelled really good but when I got it come it was very generic, nothing special at all and the guac was stale. the most enjoyable part was the chips and dip.

The food was great. Staff a very friendly and according. Our server was not on top of things and thats why Im only giving this place a okay. The brisket quesadilla was amazing. I will be seeking out another on the border just for the brisket quesadilla.
