Are dinner there Friday night 04/08/16....well, I tried to eat dinner is more accurate. My daughter ordered The Abbeys Poached Pear Salad while I went for the Hickory Smoked BBQ Baby Back Ribs with salad (balsamic vinaigrette) instead of the fries. Two minutes later, out comes my salad. With parmesan peppercorn, not balsamic. No biggie, back it goes. 5 minutes later, the waitress (who was very nice, to her credit) is back to inform me that I cant have my ribs because, well - the kitchen ran out of BBQ sauce. Youre serious? (I actually asked her). BBQ sauce? That you can buy 1/4 mile away at the convenience store? Or 1/2 mile away at Stop & Shop? Youre taking two entrees right off the menu tonight for that (the ribs and the pulled pork sandwich) because youre missing a $2.79 bottle of KC Masterpiece? Okay, so this kitchen is definitely not staffed with the best and the brightest. I was tempted to just go and buy it myself. So I have to choose something else, so I decided (since I was in a meat-y mood) to get the PLP Burger, rare, with avocado and jalapeno bacon. 3 minutes later (I was kinda shocked by how quickly it happened), shes back with the pear salad and the burger. I take a bite and its cold. Like raw cold. It was completely uncooked, you could see red through the TOP of the burger. You could smear the meat with your finger. It was un-freaking-cooked. Dont misunderstand, I like rare beef. I like carpaccio and make steak tartare. But Ill only eat it that rare if I grind the meat myself, there is too much chance to get sick if you dine out that way. I now get to spend the night waiting to see just how sanitary their kitchen is, and Im not optimistic. So this is like a slap in the face, this is the kitchen basically giving you the finger. What level of incompetence lets them a) run out of BBQ sauce, b) not quickly replace it, and c) send a piece of raw ground beef out to a table that is colder than room temperature? So I send it back of course, waitress says shell tell the chef, I say Send him out, Id like to tell him myself. The manager comes out, really tall guy, thin. Hes just paying lip service, says hell take it off the bill (duh, if he put it on Id rip it up and walk out!) I ask him about the BBQ sauce, he says they tried to buy it next door at the market (Walts) but they closed at 6 pm (its 8pm now) and in the intervening 2 hours they did nothing about it. Morons. Penny Lane Pub has a level of incompetence that takes your breath away. Ill never go back

I went to the Penny Lane Pub in Old Saybrook thinking it was a quaint little bar in the heart of town. Well it is quaint, intimant dining area, tiny bar (which is nice.) Thats where the positives stop. I asked the bartender what he had for beers in bottles which he replied gruffly, "Everything." I asked for Rolling Rock, and got a gruff "no" as a response. After settling on a beer, he did not come back to me. Its not that the bar is BIG (with a whopping five guests who stared at me like I didnt belong there), but he was simply neglectful, and NOT friendly. I never even gotten the opportunity to eat there, simply because no one cared enough to take my order. I sat there, finished my beer, and politely asked for my tab. The owner, host, whatever his title may be, saw that I was irritated that I didnt get to have lunch and asked if I wanted chowder to go. No. He asked if I wanted to order lunch. No, I wasted enough time already. I started to leave and he insisted that I take a gift certificate to try again. I said "Thank you, but no thanks" and he insisted. I should have given it to some one on the way out. For some one who works in restaurants both part and full time, this was by far one the WORST experiences Ive ever had. If you dont wear wide lapels, hold your pinky out when you drink, or just generally think you are better than everyone in the world, stay clear of this place. Snoody atmosphere, unfriendly bartender, neglectful service, and overall disapointment is enough to keep me away.

Shortly after the Penny Lane Pub opened over a decade ago in Old Saybrook, we became “regulars,” and while we moved from the Shoreline four years ago, we still visit there monthly. Of course they have great “pub grub,” but we go there for the finely prepared seafood and the wonderful, friendly atmosphere. We regard the staff as friends, who are professionals––no phony “honey” or “dear” greeting for seniors. We like the several salmon offerings, and the Scallops Shakespeare is tops. Occasionally, they will offer Arctic char or halibut. The dinner menu has a polenta grilled vegetable melt which looks like a superb dessert and tastes as good. It’s usually crowded, so reservations are advised.

We are here on a Monday for Happy Hour and its a nice relaxed atmosphere. The Mediterranean Mule is a MUST. Its absolutely delicious. The sauce that comes with the Coconut Shrimp is an Orange Horseradish and is delectable! I was a bit underwhelmed by the Ginger Loves Bourbon, but Penny Lane Pub has a lot more to offer for diners looking for an excellent Happy Hour.

I spotted this place from across the street one afternoon and decided to give it a try. Theres a sandwich called the "Cranky Yankee" for $9.99. Its a scallop sandwich on a roll with fries. Excellent. Not bay scallops mind you but big ones. Add a draft ale and you have an excellent lunch with a friendly wait staff.

Really great pub on the shoreline. They have lots of options on the menu and a great list with lots of craft beers! This is one of our favorite places to eat on the shoreline. It can get noisy on Friday and Saturday night, especially if youre seated downstairs but service is always stellar!

Very atmospheric. English pub style food, not too pricey although some of the entrees were $20+, most of the menu was in the $12-$15 range. Definitely a better lunch menu with soups and sandwiches taking up a lot of the space. Good beer selection too.

Slow service, rude hostess, burger overdone, took 10+min just to bee seen, and another 15min just to get drinks.... Been twice, dont like to make judgments on 1 visit, terrible both times....

The fish & chips and the shepherds pie are great - theyre good enough that I dont even get a menu anymore. Nice, relaxed pub atmosphere with shaded outdoor seating. Highly recommended pub.

Great restaurant! The old pub aesthetic is very apparent here, and the food is amazing as well. The clam chowder is to die for! (If you like New England Clam Chowder)

Very good food and atmosphere. Only downside, the name think pub is deceiving. Thought should be penny lane grill. Not to miss. Enjoyed scallops and salads. Enjoy

I love it here. There arent a lot of places of this kind to choose from in this town, but if there were Id still go here. Good selection, good service, good food.
