I have dined at Sitar for lunch now at least 5 times. The restaurant is clean and decorated nicely, the waitstaff is satisfactory. I think the buffet is worth the price, but I dont recommend you order anything off the menu. I was craving lamb, and they dont include lamb in their buffet, so I ordered the lunch portion of the Lamb Curry. When it arrived, I was really surprised. It came in a small bowl. When I went to spoon some over my rice, I realized that there were only 4 small pieces of lamb. The rest was all sauce. The lamb pieces were about a cubed inch in size. I asked the waiter, assuming when they filled the bowl just didnt realize there wasnt much meat in it. His reply was that the lunch portion only comes with 4 pieces (SMALL pieces) of lamb -- ($5.95). The dinner portion comes with 8 ($11.95). I dont eat huge portions but I have to admit, it was really small and sad that they actually count them out. That is a first for me. I was disappointed and ended up not being satisfied by the small portion. I have been to Tandoor (1226 Chapel) and Zaroka (148 York) Both are just as good or better and you will get a reasonable portion. They dont count out their pieces of meat, either. Both have buffets that are also very good.

I have lived in New Haven for about five years and have tried many of the Indian places in the area. Sitar is the one place that my wife and I continue to dine when we want Indian food for take out, dinner or for a quick lunch buffet. The service is friendly, prices are reasonable and portions are just right. The dishes have changed a bit through the years, but the sauces have always been unique and flavorful, especially when ordered on the spicier side. They also offer a selection of wines reasonably priced, including a few Indian wines. The atmosphere is pleasant, and it can be a nice place for a quiet, romantic evening, especially during Yales off-season when students are away and the restaurant has less traffic.

DO NOT GO HERE!!! EVER!!!! One of the worst places to go eat. They should neither be in the hospitality industry nor the food industry. The waiters here are rude and will not refrain from shouting at customers or even asking them to come early. When asked if the food is fresh, he commented given his job he cannot say otherwise and refused to answer the question. We specifically asked them that all of us are vegetarian and we ordered "Paneer". To this they served us "Chicken". When we wanted to complain, the waiter started shouting at us and the manager did not have the courage to stop him.

Just happened to notice the sign on Grove and Orange and found quick parking. Went inside and sat down after a good day in New Haven at the Yale Gallery, Yale Photo Masters thesis show, The Renolds Gallery, and East Rock Park. Eshwin our server was awesome, I being Vegan, was immediately put at ease and offered custom prepared dishes that would be safe for my dietary preference. The atmosphere was pleasant and the food some of the best in many years. I strongly recommend Sitar to anyone who would enjoy fine Indian cuisine.

The food here is absolutely DIVINE. My family has been ordering from Sitar for years now, it is always our go-to Indian place. I am vegan and they were nice enough to call me and let me know the garlic nan I had ordered had milk in it and told me they were going to add nan without dairy! Delivery is quick, the food arrives hot, they are polite and its delicious! Id give this restaurant 10 stars if I could!

Terrible service. Restaurant waiters are totally rude. The manager has no control over his staff. 1. Waiter beings by saying rude things ("why cant you come a little bit early?"). 2. Served chicken to a vegetarian person. 3. When we tried to be friendly and ease the tension, the waiter ended up being sarcastic and rude. 4. The manager didnt stop the waiter from shouting at my friend.

There are many great Indian restaurants in the New Haven area, but Sitar is one of my favorites. The food is very good and fairly priced. The service here is great. After a few visits the staff will know you which makes going back very comfortable. I highly recommend their veg menu just make sure you are VERY clear that you can handle the spice or else they may make it too bland.

Sitar was my first Indian restaurant, and they are my favorite! I love everything I have had there. I love the atomsphere and the staff is always polite and helpful. I recommend this place to everyone looking for somewhere new and different. The prices are great too! Try it if you have never had Indian! You will love it, I promise. Get the chicken tikka masala!

Got chicken and lamb biryani with my girlfriend and we both absolutely loved it. Tell them the amount of spice you want and they will get it perfectly! We went Io india in December and havent eaten Indian since then. This totally satisfied our craving and we loved the ambiance! Our waiter was awesome as well :) Such good vibes in Sitar with great foods!!!!

I never vote anything 5 star, but they deserve a higher rating. I go most Sundays after church for lunch and I love their buffet. Its not always the same so your favorite may be there one week and gone the next but its good food at a decent price. Good atmosphere and amazing service, I rarely ask for anything because they make sure to do a good job.

Just average...Im from Noth India and have had lot better Indian food here. I ordered Paneer Masala, Bhindi Masala and Veg Korma. .. All were very basic and lacked the zing of North Indian spice and aroma. Bhindi Masala was poorly prepared, should have been a dry dish rather than gravy one. Silver Lining: The veg platter was ABSOLUTELY great !

We have been for dinner and for the lunch buffet and both experiences were great. The food was delicious and our waiters were quick and kind. I ordered the tandoori chicken which was excellent. The lunch buffet was hot with an assortment of foods which were as good as the quality we tasted when we ate there for dinner. We will be going back.

Its not super fancy, but its a good place for a business lunch or a causal dinner. They have lots of different kinds of drink offerings: beer, lassi, wine, etc. And the food is really good. The cream-based entrees are just right -- not too thin. The Chicken Tika Masala is YUM, of course.

The food is fantastic. This was the first New Haven Indian restaurant Ive eaten from since moving to the city (May 2008). I have only had take-out from there, but, based on the amiable staff, I am sure eating there would be delightful. I highly recommend this fine establishment.

Dont get takeout from this restaurant. We did; and after waiting 90 minutes, we called and found out that the delivery person inexplicably couldnt find our house . . . and so, he simply gave up and returned to the restaurant . Nobody even bothered to call and let us know!

My friend and I were hungry and looking for an Indian restaurant. Boy did we find it! Best meal ever and the waitor was really nice. So much flavor. I will have to bring my husband the next time, he is a fan of Indian food. We left full and happy.
