Ok, if you love sushi, you will absolutely LOVE this place. If you have never had sushi, this is the place to try it first. "IWA" is the consumate host and owner. He is a colorful charachter, and is alot of fun, especially on Friday and Saturday nights when the stereo blares ELVIS and WAR. He tends to drink a little bit (OK, alot) on those nights, and always flashes his trademark smile for everyone. This place will not win any awards for ambiance... it has been there a very long time (over 20 years)... But the food more than makes up for it. Expect to wait in line a few minutes on the weekends; IWA has a huge following. The SUSHI is the real star here. First of all, you have to try the IWA TACO. It is about six bucks, and it is heavenly. The "torilla" is a large leaf of romaine lettuce, and the "meat" is rice. Crab is added, along with avacado, bean sprouts, special sauce (Do not bother asking what it is; IWA does not even tell the other sushi chefs who work for him) and a whole deep-fried soft-shell crab. Before serving, you will be asked: "SPICY OR NO SPICY?" I like it hot, but that will be left up to you. The IWA TACO is the perfect apetizer! Forget the menu! The real deal is the items on the dry erase boards behind the bar. MANY of the menu items are named after the assistant sushi chefs (all mexicans, ironically) and long time CUSTOMERS. I personally LOVE the TERI BOWL, which is a simple rice bowl with TUNA, AVACADO slices, bean sprouts, and HOT SAUCE! (spicy or no spicy?). The CAJUN TUNA is seared tuna with hot sauce (spicy or no spicy?), and is TO DIE FOR. The MUSHROOM-SCALLOPS is one of the HOT dishes, and is wonderful, as is the BABY OCTOPUS SALAD. The CILANTRO HALIBUT is very different and memorable, and in spite of the generous portion, will leave you wanting MORE. The EEL ROLL is delicious and very UNIQUE. I love the EEL ROLL because the inside is cold (crab), the rice is room tempurature, and the EEL itself is WARM. Delicious! The JEFF ROLL is a work of art, and is covered with mango and strawberry slices, and is an interesting and delightful offering. If you are there for lunch, IWA will bid you farewell by saying : "See you tonight!". If it is dinner, he will say "See you tomorrow!". Every time. Really. Expect to pay; it is not cheap. My wife and I usually share several items between us, and the bill is usually around 50 or 60 bucks; more if you drink Sapporo or Saki. I highly recommend this place in the day and age of sushi bars on every corner. Sushi From East is in a little mini mall behind an AM/PM gas station on the corner of WHITTIER BLVD and SCOTT (accross from the CADILLAC STORE). It is not lost on me that while SUSHI FROM EAST has a line out the door on the weekends, the MEXICAN PLACE next door is DESERTED. YOU WILL LOVE IT. Great atmosphere, and everyone in there seems like your friends. My first time there, another customer ordered the BABY OCTOPUS SALAD and I asked her what it was... She actually offered my wife and I A TASTE!!! At first we declined, but after she insisted, we accepted, and we were hooked! Now, it someone asks US "what is that?" we always offer a taste! GO IWA.

Ive been going to Iwas place since before anyone knew where/what it was. I can remember being in there during dinner time with my mother and step father. The three of us would be the only ones in the place. In fact we went so often that he named a roll after my step father; the Arie roll (lol). Though, now a days youre lucky if you can even sit at a table, let alone the bar. The food is always fresh and delicious. Nothing beats the welcoming atmosphere of this place. The place is a bit tight though so those squeamish of reaching over people, or making new friends quick, had better move to a lower class place. XD Iwa is the best!

Ordered kobe nigiri. Good. Ordred omakase sushi B. Very bad. Fish was not fresh. I hope i dont get sick from the fish. Didnt finish it. It was slimy. It had no tendernece. In general their food its salty. Their sapporo premium was flat. Nice workers, but food is not worth it and the price is about average. And now now they tried to charge me for sake i didnt order. They also had asked if we wanted miso soup andor edemame. We said yes thinking it was included in the meal, i was wrong. We did also ask for the edemame but hey never brought it. The miso soup was also very salty just like the chicken yaki-udon. Not coming back.

This is that little hole in the wall restaurant you pass by and you mean to try it out and never do. Ive been living for 3 years in Whittier, and this restaurant has been on my "to do" list. Im so mad at myself for taking so long, this has been the best sushi Ive had in Los Angeles, even better than any sushi in Little Tokyo. I sat on the bar, thats by far the best place to sit. Ordered California roll, spicy shrimp roll, and from the kitchen I ordered udon chicken noodles. Everything was so good. Dont think twice, this has become my favorite place to eat in LA!

What makes this place stand out is their fresh and unique selection of fish you cant find at other sushi resturants. Not mention their 2nd to none customer service.
