Go for the main course and Yakitori and skip the dessert. The meat and veg Yakitori items came in two skewers and the seafood items only came in one skewer. The Sake was done to perfection, crispy skin on one side with just the right amount of salt and a moist center. The Hamachi was slightly over cooked. The center was on the dry side, too much salt was used. If it wasnt for the fat on the outside this would have been a disappointing selection. Happy hour is from 5:30 to 7, Discount on beer and a small selection of appetizers. We ordered the Tatsuta-age, which is fried chicken thigh with Japanese mayo on the side. Memorable dishes included Yellowtail Carpaccio (enough for two to three) and Beef Tataki. Both were the same price, if I had to choose between the two, Id go with the Carpaccio. The Yellowtail was a more light and refreshing dish. Id recommend the Kalbi Don to share. The dish could have done without the minced lettuce as it was more of a distraction. The Kalbi was done to perfection, perfectly cooked medium rare. The bowl consisted of kalbi, rice, kimchi, special sauce and a poached egg. Skip the dessert. The Black sesame panna cotta was very muted, could barely taste the black sesame. The weird part was that it was only 1/4 black sesame and 3/4 another flavor. The fresh cream on top that came with the dessert was sweater than the panna cotta. The texture was way to firm to be freshly made, felt like its been in the fridge for a while. The green tea creme brulee also felt like its been sitting in the fridge for way too long. The sugar on top was cold and previously prepared in advance. The flavoring was very light, void from having any green tea flavoring.

My oh my. When I think of yakitori in Northern California, only one spot comes to mind: Sumiya Yakitori. Year after year, time after time, this has been my go-to spot for some amazingly delicious yakitori, and I still crave it to this day. I remember back in the day when Sumiya was in the smaller location, and unfortunately, a fire brought that place to a close. Even so, they reopened with a larger location, with the same food that youve all come to know and love. Located right on Homestead, this place is a little far from the freeway, but dont worry because this place is well worth the drive. Now prior to coming here, you might actually want to make a reservation. Without a reservation, youre really rolling the dice here and might not even be able to dine here at all. Ive never seen this place empty before, and theres a good reason behind that. The food here, like Ive said, is simply amazing. Once you step inside, youll be greeted with that nice, smokey, charcoal smell. As far as yakitori itself, I like to stick to a couple of the essentials: - tsukune, hatsu, sasami, kimo, teba, kamo, kalbi, gyutan. Appetizer-wise: - takowasa, tatsua-age, jagabata, kurobuta sausage, jidori salad. If youre still hungry after, I do always close off my meal with the Sumiya chazuke. With that said and done, youll be left incredibly content. Eating here can get pricey depending on your appetite. There have been times in which Ive spent about $30 a person, and other times where it was closer to $60-75 a person. Nonetheless, its worth every dollar you spend. Even though I moved to NYC, I still reminisce about Sumiya when I think of yakitori. Oh Sumiya, please stay open forever.

Very good Yakitori, and you smell the charcoal right when you walk in the door. Good yakitori masters the flavors of char, caramelized and browned meat, and simple seasonings and sauces to make a perfect skewer. I had a variety of poultry and organ meats here, most of which pretty solid. It is a bit pricey, we spent about 38/person pre tip. We ordered a lot, but I would say you should expect at least 25/person pre tip. More delicate food, but just be aware of this. That said, Yakitori in the Bay Area is generally expensive, so dont be surprised. One last thing: My favorite for Yakitori is the pork belly. This place didnt really do it to my liking. Not too tender or fatty enough, and my pork belly was more wet and chewy versus the crispy crunchy outside with the silky interior you commonly see. But all of the other skewers were fantastic.

Went for lunch yesterday - second in line at 11:25. Delicious and authentic. Got the B bento with a side of tonkatsu. The beef kalbi skewers were tender and delicious! Definitely a highlight. The grilled pork belly was good with a nice crispy sear. Too full to try the chicken thigh skewer so took it home. Enjoyed the healthy salad and the rice with a soft-cooked egg on top. Tonkatsu was pretty good too - crispy and tasty, without too much fat. The chicken karaage looked really good with a tatsutage-like breading. I liked the chicken soup too. I thought the tsukune ground chicken was a little dry personally. ご馳走さまでした! Will bring my husband next time!

Yakitori heaven! Everything from beef, chicken, seafood, veggies, and even a combination of two (i.e.: bacon wrapped enoki mushrooms). Check the specials menu for season specialties as well! If you do not know what to order, opt for one of the 3 set meals which include a chicken ball soup, a variety of yakitori skewers, and a donburi (rice) bowl. My favorite is the kalbi don rice set. The kalbi is buttery, kimchi slightly spicy, combined with the lava-like under poached egg and cool veggies with nori - heaven! For dessert, dont miss the green tea creme brûlée!

My experience at Sumiya was definitely satisfying! Although I heard that there is usually a long wait, my party and I was seated immediately, even though we arrived at peak lunchtime. I ordered the Shiro Maguro Don, which also comes with Soup and Salad. The main dish was really good - I havent seen too many places that have donburi with sashimi so I was pleasantly surprised. The salad also had amazing dressing that wasnt too overbearing. Their lunch specials are definitely worth it! Will have to come back and try their dinner menu sometime.

I stop here every time Im in the area for work. I love charcoal grilled skewers (kushiyaki). Their chicken wings are crispy on the outside while juicy on the inside. Everything else are very delicious, cooked just right, and perfectly seasoned. I came pretty late and they took the time (I think they kept an eye on me) to serve me as Im about the wrap up what Im eating so that everything is still hot when I dig in. You wont be disappointed!!

Been here a couple years ago and remember it being delicious. Was in the area today and wanted some izakaya and yakitori, so we decided to come back here. We called ahead and made a reservation so our wait was only 15 minutes. Everything we ordered was delicious except for dessert. There was no black sesame taste in the black sesame panna cotta. However, that being said, I would definitely come back here again.

The food is beautiful, tasty, and comes out quickly, but the overall service kind of sucks. You dont really get a designated waiter and that makes things a bit confusing. Different people take your order, bring your food, take away plates and they all seem so harried. Nobody really checks in to see if you need anything else and after we noted we were through, we had to ask for the check twice.
