An old-school diner with lots of vegan options? Lets go! I was amazed by the sheer number of vegetarian and vegan options offered at St. Francis Fountain. They have tofu scrambles, vegan chorizo hash, vegan pancakes, vegan sausage patties, veggie chili, garden burgers and seitan melts! They even have veganaise and Earth Balance Buttery Spread. I ordered the vegan blueberry pancakes with a side of vegan chorizo hash. The pancakes are more dense and chewy than your typical buttermilk variety. This is neither better nor worse, just different. They were bursting with blueberries, which was a treat. The vegan chorizo hash is quite oily (as hash often is), but its quite tasty. They served it with the Earth Balance spread, which I had never tried before. Its pretty similar to a salted, whipped butter. My partner ordered the Polar Melt on light rye. The seitan is well seasoned. If you like patty melts and the like, this is a great veggie option (it came with jack cheese, which you can probably leave off it you want to go vegan). Its one of the best melts Ive tasted in a long time! They carry Mitchells ice cream and La Copa Loca gelato for desserts and fountain drinks. They also have vanilla soy as a non-dairy option. We didnt try any of these since we were so full from our meals. Maybe next time. Their brewed coffee is pleasantly strong and their staff is quite friendly. Combined with a big, tasty meal, its hard to leave without a smile on your face. Its not the healthiest place to eat (it is an old-school diner after all!), but the veggie and vegan options really show how almost every other restaurant out there is really dropping the ball when it comes to plant-based dining!

Legend has it that hipsters line the walls of this place, but from first-hand experience, that isnt the case, so dont feel intimidated ala Four Barrel. St. Francis is your grandfathers-type diner. From the outside, the place is aglow with large neon signs luring all passersby like mosquitoes. Then on the inside, booths reminiscent of old wooden church pews encompass most of the seating, and a random, seemingly-misplaced candy stand greets you as you walk in. But it is all of these quirks that add to the character of St. Francis making it a unique place to eat. Here, Ive ordered the Chefs Mess, which is ultimately a pile of scrambled eggs, mushrooms, bacon, sour cream, cheese, and tomatoes. Twas very filling, but nothing special. On a separate occasion, I tried their chocolate shake, which they concoct carefully using Mitchells Ice Cream (as it took almost 10 mins to make). This is what I feel has garnered its followers. Not only was it tasty, but the leftovers that they hand you in a silver cup was enough to re-fill my glass 2 times over. Now, thats what you call: bang for the buck! Overall, my visits to St. Francis Fountain have been good, but is it worth waiting 30 mins to an hour to eat? Maybe not. But on a warm day in San Francisco, come and visit for their shakes. I promise, you will be pleased.

My wife and I went here while on vacation, and had a great time.... came in for a late breakfast, this past Wednesday. I ordered the three egg omelette served with salsa, avacado, and, cheddar, w /home fries and my wife had two eggs over easy, bacon w/home fries......we had coffee as well.....we finished with a couple of egg creams, as a light dessert, which were very good.....the whole breakfast was very good, filling, and prepared us for our 1.5 mile long hike later that afternoon, in Muir Woods, which was part of our bus tour around San Francisco.....l also loved the vintage decor, which made you feel like you were in the early 1900s,1918 to be exact! St. Francis Fountain was a most enjoyable part of our trip to San Francisco! The server was also very nice and friendly as well....a most enjoyable trip! This is my kind of place.....

Slooow. We were skipped by countless parties because they could not figure out hue to seat a party of six (e.g. would not move two tables together outside) and we ended up waiting for ca. 1.5 hours. Eventually they seated us next door, which was a nice move but 1.5 hours too late. The food was so-so. Not that it was bad, but out of a party of six starving people nobody particularly liked their food. After all, it was truly nothing we couldnt have cooked ourselves in 5 minutes. Oh... in case youre wondering... it is hella hipster, so you better lock that one-gearer, grow out that mustache, thicken your frames to 25 pixels, and wear grandpas triathlon shorts with thick irony.

St. Francis is hands down the best brunch in the city. Other places might be fancier on the one hand, or cheaper on the other, but St. Francis combines great ambience, excellent food, unbelievable value, and friendly service for a must-repeat experience every time. My wife and I go here every few weeks and we still find new things to enjoy on the huge menu, while also spotting new curiosities lining the walls (look for the old school telephone booth near the back!). Only down side: no reservations, so youll need to come put your name on the paper list outside the door. During peak times (11am-2pm on weekends) it can be ~30-45 mins wait for 2.

Everything at the landmark St Francis is on point! I work in hospitality and look for exceptional experiences when I dine out and this is one place that will never disappoint your expectations. The service is off the rictor friendly, attentive and consistant, the. FOOD...DAMN the food, Im hungry for more just writing about it. Dont sleep on this place, it isnt a secreat and it is only open until 3 so you dont want to miss out on your new SF spot for that hangout with friends for a great experience. Drive, walk or BART it in to the Mission for my new favorite place....well, what the hell are you waiting for get your ass down here.

My favorite habitual breakfast place in San Francisco. I found this place on Yelp while searching for chocolate chip pancakes--and it didnt disappoint! The menu and atmosphere are similar to Boogaloos, but its less overrun with hipsters (perhaps owing to its location on the eastern border of the Mission). As a bonus, Justina was ecstatic to find some Dark Crystal trading cards at the vintage candy/tchotchke counter. Oh, and you have to admire a menu that offers you "Nebulous Potato Thing" (their answer to Boogaloos "Temple of Hash"). St. Francis Fountain was an instant addition to our short list of Sunday brunch haunts.

Came here for ice cream after dinner elsewhere. They serve Mitchells ice cream! Sitting at the counter, I had an avocado malted and my friend enjoyed a banana split. Both were quite tasty, hand-scooped and served with a smile, and the menu left us with a great desire to return. It is a wonderful mix of expected Mission district lunch-counter foods and vegan/veggie/soy adaptations. Each dessert cost about $4.00 which wasnt bad at all. Especial compliments to whomever shops for the collectors cards at the toy counter! We came away with packs of Magnum PI, Heavy Metal, Growing Pains and Dark Crystal cards.

Hands down my favorite brunch place in San Francisco. Total diner food---excellent menu creations of potatoes, cheese, bacon, and sour cream. Big portions. I usually cant decide between the Chefs Mess and the Nebulous Potato Thing. Also, you MUST THING YOUR SPUDS. Just makes them delicious. There is usually a wait on weekends, but its totally worth it. Ive also come here and had a milkshake and those are quite delicious as well. Very fun, diner, hipster vibe. Not the place to go to impress your parents or your boss, but its a favorite place for friends on the weekend.
