I’m a beer snob. There I said it! Since Magnolia Gastropub & Brewery is located in the touristy Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco where the hippie movement is said to have started, I expected an Applebee’s type beer selection. If I’m faced with the typical, Bud, Bud Light, Coors Light, Miller Lite, and Sam Adams choices for draft beers in a bar, I usually walk out or will order a water. So when I find a bar that has an excellent list of craft beers AND bartenders that are basically cicerones – I’m in heaven. Magnolia Gastropub & Brewery fits that bill and more. We were introduced to Magnolia by a local craft beer snob and friend, Standard Greg. Not only do they have several (up to 18) delicious, varied, and unique beers on draft – they also have a few on cask at any given time! As the icing on the cake – they brew most of the beer themselves (might be all, but I didn’t want to make an inaccurate blanket statement without proof!). Prices were more than reasonable for the quality of the food and beer and for the atmosphere and the knowledge shared. I’m sure it helped that we were with a regular and respected restaurant manager in the area, but the staff at Magnolia’s treated us like family and offered suggestions and samples. All were spot on and well-informed. I enjoyed the Magnolia Pub Burger with bacon and Gruyere and two dark stouts that were fantastic. If they bottled beer I would’ve taken pictures of the names to remember them, but since I know I can only get their beer at their Gastropub – it was futile. From what I understand, get there early for lunch or expect to have a 20-30 minute wait at any given time. It’s that good.

On a whim, we chose this place for brunch. Having had brunch there, we bet its a much hotter dinner/beer drinking spot. Everything about our meal was good, the food was tasty, although I wished there were more of it (i am keeping two brunch lists, one for quantity and one for quality. The quality list is filling up fast, the quantity one, not so much). The staff was friendly, the coffee was good (but not very plentiful) and if you get a window seat, you can stare at the happy high herb shop across the street and wonder whats in there. I got the pork belly and grits. It was pretty good, but I wished it had more flavor. My wife got the scotch quail eggs, wrapped in sausage. They were AWESOME, but quite small. Got there before the place got super packed, which was a boon. Wanted to try some of the beers, but it was way too early for that business. They seem to take their beer quite seriously though, so Ill be sure to check that out soon.

We stopped by Magnolia on the way up to Sonoma after a long week at MacWorld. Located just a block off Haight-Ashbury you can tell its quite the local spot when you first enter. Like most shops in the area the walls are painted with interesting themes. Seating is good and the booths are made out of wood (hope you dont have a bad back because the backs are 90º straight up). The food menu offered a good number of options including vegetarian (imagine that in a place like this) options. Our food was great. Beer selection was great too. Lots of variety with a couple aged on tap too. The brewer was nice enough to give me a tour while the boil was going on. Would have loved to stay longer and had everything they had to offer but Wine Country (and the Bear Republic).

A little bit fancy for Upper Haight, this is a more modern twist on the traditional pub with its dark wood and black and white accents. The booths are cozy if youre with an intimate party, theres a long communal table if youre feeling social, or theres also outside seating if the weathers good, and youre in the mood to people watch. Bartenders and servers are all really nice and patient with questions about the brews. I like everything Ive tried there, especially the Kolsch and IPA. The burger and fries are pretty special, too, although they seem to specialize more in the meat, cheese, and sausage area. Definitely a local alternative to the nitty, gritty of a traditional English pub.

Initial judgment: Worthy Expect San Francisco prices because rent is so high, especially in famous areas. The meals Ive had so far should meet most or all standards for quality, flavor and authenticity (British fare). The brew they, well, brew, receives an enthusiastic "more than expected" rating from this intermediate small batch brewmeister. Im not sure how this is relevant, butt it was here that I had a revelation about why people like to people watch. Its quite the conglomeration of every type you know of, and then some. The Haight Ashbury district is a fleeting but memorable experience, and this corner gastropub is worth consideration. d-_-b

Okay. I give this place 5 stars for their fried chicken Thursdays!!! OMG. I cant remember who is in the kitchen but the work it out all the time. Fried chicken Thursdays is something Ive often looked forward to. They often change the sides but the fired chicken is always the same. Sometimes they even run out. I think I heard a story that a woman comes in every Thursday for the fried chicken and has been doing this for years. I would do the same if I still lived around the corner. The reason this place gets a 4 star instead of a 5 is because I dont love the beer. They switch it up often but its rare that I like any of the beer which is disappointing.

This is one of the best breweries in SF, and the only brewery where I regularly go for brunch! People knock on the food, but I think its great and usually not too crowded even on Sundays. As a Philadelphia native, anywhere that serves scrapple is a hero in my book! The scotch quail eggs appetizer is also insanely good. If nothing else, go there in the fall for the fresh hop ales and Rosebud, their seasonal gift to the world, and again in February for their strong beer month. The pints are a bit expensive, sure, but the fact that you cant get it anywhere else (and that its really really goood!) make it worth stopping in every once in a while.

We met friends here on a Friday night and the place was packed and lively. I really enjoyed the ambience and the waitresses were super friendly and attentive. The beers on tap were awesome. They have a wide selection. You really cant go wrong from a pale ale to a dark wheat beer, they have everything youd like. The food was also pretty good. The fish and chips were perfect and the burgers were big and juicy. I would personally say that the prices are a bit steep on the food but the quality was still great. I highly recommend if youre meeting up with friends to chat as they dont have music blaring.

SF has lots of great breweries-- but Magnolia has a special place in my heart. While I generally like the hoppier style beers-- Magnolia offers a break from the super hoppy and super alcoholic brews that you get at most of the other breweries in town (although they sometimes have some epic guest brews on tap). The beers are more english in style--- The food is amazing. Try the scottish eggs... they are amazing. and so is are the dates stuffed with cheese wrapped in bacon. Tuesdays you can find sweet deals as its neighborhood night--- with deals on brews and food. It gets crowded though so go early.
