We looked around San Francisco for a Michelin restaurant to end our holiday and both price wise and menu wise, Luce was by far our best choice. Ive eaten in many fine dining restaurants in the UK and for us the experience starts the moment you walk in. Luce is set in a hotel, so you have to cope with the hotel entrance and service before getting to the restaurant. We arrived early so decided to have a drink at the bar. We made ourselves known to the restaurant greeter and informed this of this, and they obliged and took the drinks order. The bar is the hotel public bar, so was quite busy with sport on TVs over the bar. We were presented with a bill and asked if it could be added to our restaurant bill and told it couldnt, not what I would expect. I gave credit card and duly signed. The barman later came to our table to ask what room we were in to pay the bill, they hadnt taken payment from the credit card even though I signed a credit card check, so had to "repay" for the drinks. On arrival to the restaurant we were shown to our table, no offer was made to take jackets/coats, I had to put it on the banquette next to me. We placed our order for the Tasting Menu with accompanying wine flight. Our main waiter was friendly and professional what was less consistent was we had at least 3 people ended up serving us various courses, so there was no consistency of service. The food itself was excellent and to the standard i expect from a fine dining restaurant and good wine parings. I had good substitutions for my "no seafood" options. Favourite dishes were the Fois Gras and the main Duck. The rough around the edges creeps in again at the end of the meal when service was all but non-existant. Staff were too busy setting up tables for breakfast. It tood a while to order digestifs and coffee and then finally to get the bill. When we left there was no acknowledgement from any staff. Food is great and I would return, but at this level, the small details count to make you feel special and that is what was lacking.

Came here with my boyfriend for dinner on Saturday night. We were guests at the Intercontinental Hotel so it was convenient so we rolled out of bed from a long day of walking, and didnt feel judged by my tasseled hair and leggings. The fact that it is Michelin rated drew me in as well. The restaurant was fairly empty (probably because of the location and stigma of hotel restaurants). Service was wonderful -- great knowledgable waiter. Complimentary bread (several choices, was warm). I opted for the olive bread which was yummy. My boyfriend and I split a bottle of French Malbec. Although they had a tasting menu, we opted to just order from the regular menu since the tasting menu had 3 courses of dessert and the courses we liked were also on the regular menu (and very glad we did!). I started with the roasted quail & speck served with asparagus, Crispy Levain, Fromage Blanc, Tarragon (description direct from the menu). It was delicious. Presentation was beautiful. My boyfriend ordered the seared diver scallop and abalone with duck consumme. He thought it was delicious as well. For our entrees, I ordered the roasted lamb loin with crispy pork belly. It was beautiful -- great presentation with cute little mushrooms. Tasted wonderful too. My boyfriend ordered the poached Maine lobster which he also enjoyed. For dessert, I tried the foie gras ice cream (served with bread crumbs, sponge cake and strawberries) -- thought it would be weird but the foie gras was subtle. My boyfriend ordered the textured chocolate, which was an assortment of various chocolates. Overall, a very spectacular meal. I can definitely understand why it has a Michelin star. Would highly highly recommend!

Food: 4 Decor: 4 Service: 4 Been here twice for dine about town. First time was excellent, and the second time was okay/pretty good. I dont remember the first menu that well, but overall it was probably the best out of all the ones I went to (Roka Akor, Dosa, Spruce, and a couple others). June 2014 menu, 37: 1. Green Spring Vegetables & Handmade Ricotta Pickled Cauliflower, Lemon Meringue ~Pretty good. Everything was cooked perfectly, and the blossoms were an interesting addition. 2. Breast of Chicken, Slowly Roasted with Herbs & Butter, Chicken Sausage, Baby Artichokes, Fresh & Dried Beans, Slow Cooked Egg ~Pretty good. Chicken prepared three ways. Cooked perfectly. 3. Vanilla Bean Vacherin Strawberry, Pistachio ~Pretty good. Borderline too sweet for me, but the pistaciho and strawberry was an interesting combination. 4. Wine pairing ~Pretty good. Service was pretty good, although there was a piece of cork in my first pour. Water and bread service were also slow at the beginning. This past DAT menu was a bit boring compared to the one prior, so Im really hoping on a more exciting one next time around.

Came here for Dine About Town in 6/14. The menu was the following: - Asparagus dish with green pea sauce - This was a nice light starter - Sous vide prepared chicken with chicken sausage - Chicken was cooked very well, but was pretty light. No layer of roasted/crispy skin if you like that type of chicken. The sausage was nice and a small bite size. - vanilla bean vacherin strawberry with rasberry sorbet - Did not like this, thought the sorbet was too sour and overpowered the dessert. Also got the risotto with egg. This was delicious and had great flavor. They also offered a complimentary green onion madeline which was great before the courses. Overall I thought the restaurant was good, and truthfully only went here because they had a michelin star and they offered a dine about town menu. They offered great cocktails and a nice quiet elegant space to spend an evening. Probably would not come again if it wasnt for the Dine about Town.

The type of fussy cuisine mincuer style dishes that i thought had died a sudden death in the late eighties. From the over elaborate and under seasoned soup presentation to the lavender honey and cheese dish served on oversized glass plates Luce served up bland dish after bland dish with monotonous regularity from its undistinguished little kitchen. The chef at one point came out to chat with some of the diners, her unblemished tunic indicating the amount of input she had in her own food. After 45 minutes of idle chit chat and several glances at our table where the main course still hadnt arrrived she started too approach us!!!!!! then thought better of it. This became less than a Merry Christmas for us as we were staying in this hotel and had hoped for something a little more festive. Let this one go the way of the dinosaurs and the raspberry coulis!
