What an adorable little cafe in the heart of Hillcrest! We stopped by on Saturday afternoon to have a cup of coffee and grab a bite to eat. The interior is lovely and welcoming, offering sofas and comfy seating areas to study, do work, or just pass the time with your cup of joe. Rich reds and earthy colors envelop the space, making it warm and inviting. Quiet, too; a very nice quality. Subterranean sports an impressive menu. They serve breakfast sandwiches until 3pm, but I was immediately drawn to their lunch offerings. Specifically, my eye couldnt stop staring at the Chicken Salad Sandwich. This was certainly one of the most memorable chicken salad sandwiches Ive had in quite awhile. The chicken is soft and tender, cut up in bite-sized cubes. Its all dressed in a ridiculously addictive sauce that just takes the overall flavor to a level all its own. I devoured the sandwich and loved every bite. The bread its served on is also high quality.

The internet connection here is second to none for those of you who enjoy gaming at coffee shops like I do.Young Hickory up the street also has fantastic wifi and stays open an hour or two later however has a reallllly limited menu selection, whereas even though its super hipster, the food at subterranean is on point AND you can have the bakery items heated up for you, I myself enjoyed the brownies, cinnamon rolls, chocolate Croissants, and the sandwiches such as Turkey on Brie and the Italian Stallion. When youre tired and want to relax across the street north is a hookah lounge and to the outside is a good burrito shop when you get burned out on baked goods and sandwiches. Truly the premium location. This to me makes it the best coffee shop in the region for gamers.

What makes this place so special is the calm atmosphere where book lovers can read, work a little on grad school and indulge in a wonderful array of coffees that never break the bank. They even serve the coffee in pint glasses with foam and will decorate it so it looks as good as it tastes. Ive always had exceptionally friendly service, and the food is also delicious. My favorite thing to do here is sit outside, people watch, read, and eventually head over to Verbatim Books to peruse. Last time I went to Subterranean I saw someone reading the same book I was. Seems to be the right kind of culture for those who like quiet time with a philosophical book.

Awesome discovery: one-of-a-kind coffeehouse (as in no franschise or corporation behind; as in no margin or gracing period if people dont like it; as in responsive and accountable to the community and all those served) North Park is of course an area where I am a frequent flier, and this will be a place I want to go after my weekly session with My Soulguide (with office about 3min away from there) Warm service, wide menu, and an atmosphere that made me feel it was a perfect place to come undone

This place is awesome! Im not much for the hipster vibe they have there, but I do really like the food and drinks. Im super impressed by their salads too. Ive had every one they serve and none of them needed the dressing. Im not a salad person at all, I promise. My favorite is the strawberry almond brie salad. They also have really good brewed coffee. If youre looking for something sweeter the recess mocha is great.

Just discovered this place and am thrilled, because it will definitely be a go-to place for me from now on. Equal parts delicious coffee and breakfast/sandwich shop. Quality incredients and creative menu (not just the standard cafe fare), reasonably priced, especially for the area. Great ambiance with plenty of seating if you plan to linger with a laptop, etc. Super friendly staff, and generous open-hours.

Amazing first experience!!! Wishing I would have noticed this awesome coffee house in my own neighborhood (dark signage hides your location) a lot sooner. The best mocha ever and was even a Reeses mocha?!?! What?! The hubby got a very tasty coconut chai tea and definitely will be a frequent hang out from now on!!

Was there in September visiting for 4 days. Excellent place, more than a coffee shop as the food is much better than the usual coffee shop fare. I like that they have soda with sugar instead of high fructose and the pastry is also a cut above. Nice layout, internet has plenty of juice. Highly recommended.

I come here for the vegan cookies, and stay for the delicious coffee and chill vibes. Try their avocado toast! They do get busy at breakfast times on the weekend, but wait times arent bad and the staff are wonderful. Thank you for having so many vegan options.

Let me just say that I love Subterranean Coffee Boutique North Park! I ordered the arugula chicken salad and it was so tasty and filling. There was so much flavor and the portion was huge! The BEST salad Ive ever had hands down! Will definitely be back!

The food was delicious, but both times I was here the service was so slow and both my drink and food took forever. I didnt have the coffee here but my boyfriend (who is serious about his espresso) said it was one of the best he had in the area.

I moved away for a little under a year and came back. I have to be completely honest and say that this place is STILL my favorite spot to get a delicious cup of coffee and an amazing bite to eat. Gene and Kelsey...keep doing what you are doing

Comfortable place with a living room atmosphere. Great, friendly owners. If studying is your priority, subterranean is perfect. Food and coffee are good, but they have tough nearby competition, this place competes with personality.

I needed a catering order for a client. From the beginning, Gene was on top of it. I picked up my order and it was beyond expectations. My Clients were so happy with the food!! Cant wait to use Subterranean Again!!

Nice art on the walls but it was a little dark, there were too many flies and it was stuffy. Coffee was really good. Table with four barking dogs killed the chilled vibe but that wasnt the coffee shops fault.

Amazing small cafe with delicious drinks. They have books to read, games to play, and several outlets to plug in your laptops. Its a very calm cafe near the hub of North Park.

Great Filipino food choices. The pork belly slice was juicy and flavorful. Nice desserts too. The Sansrival pastry was yummy. Masarap! (Delicious!)

Great coffee and food at really fair prices. It does get packed often though so be wary of that if you are here to study or get homework done.

Cool place! Low key, down to earth vibe featuring some vintage goodies. They steam their eggs -- it was delicious! Menu is enticing!
