Ok this place has an awesome atmosphere , great service but when it comes to the food I dont get the hype.Me and my girlfriend had dinner in the bar it was a busy night we didnt mind cocktails with dinner is the usual relaxation method for us anyway. We ordered a green salad with there Japanese dressing this was good at first i thought a little pricey but the portion was huge. Fried calamari as an appetizer while I prefer the rings over cut steak patty version which is what they had it was still good not the best I have had. Next came our salmon sashimi on a bed of ice.WOW let me tell you everyone should serve sashimi this way it was fresh cold and tasty by far the best thing we ate. Now on to the disappointment. The crunchy roll absolutely was the worst I have ever had even compared to home made sushi . We ate one peice each and left the rest. It was simply off. Next a rainbow roll this was good other than the filling. Also the salmon surprise ? I think is what they called it. Again the filling was just gross! So after finding out the tuna in consistency filling was freeze dried crab with mayo to make it moist I now understood. I like my crab fresh even if it is imitation it is MUCH better and why the added fat with mayo? It was simply nasty looked like what you put in a tuna sandwich had a weird consistency and well didnt taste fresh for obvious reasons. Other than that it is a cool place . I might go back and only order drinks with sashimi but thats about it.

First, I just want to say that the decoration at this place is superberb. Right away, you cant help but notice the little touch that they add to bring the Japanese ambiance to this place, cute!!! Now, time to get real and talk about the food, which i think is a little better than average, but nothing was spectacular. I mean they throw eggs onto practically every dish we order. I pretty much went on yelp, and order almost everything that people raved about, it was good, but not great. One roll that I highly recommend that you AVOID is the crunchy hand roll, it was overly sweet. I took one bite, and immediately put it down .**** One cool thing about this place is that they give you a complimentary picture if you go there for your birthday; however, they take it after you ask for the check, which is bad. They rushed in taking your picture and printing it. You dont look as decent as you did when you enter the restaurant after scarfing down the food. Must try 1. One night stand 2. yellowtail boat 3. cucumber roll

Matsu is one of my favorite Japanese restaurants in all of central Orange County. The food is fantastic and you always get a lot of bang for your buck. The ambiance is great for groups or a couples on a date. When I first started eating here, this used to be one of the most authentic Japanese restaurants around because most of the waiters and waitresses used to be Japanese. That was great because I could speak Japanese to the servers. But recently, most of the servers arent Japanese. So, for me, that takes away a little from the experience. Also, parking can be a bit tricky at times. However, the food is so outstanding that Id still give it 5 stars thanks to the chefs and the great atmosphere provided by management.

Run down. This place has been here for decades, and it shows. Nasty restrooms, old decor, dark atmosphere. I sat in a booth in the restaurant section. The menu has almost no vegetarian options. Im not vegetarian, but I eat healthy. There was only one veggie entrée plate, and it was only steamed veggies with absolutely no seasoning! What kind of restaurant would charge for something I could cook far better at home?? Service was excessively invasive. The busboys would refill water if it was 1" below full and took plates away before I was finished eating without asking. Annoying! I have no idea how this place has been in business for so long.

Food decent. But customer service and 1 star! Was standing waiting in lobby for a table when I seen a lady who was 8 months pregnant. Since there is was limited sitting space and guys who were sitting down enjoying their huge mugs of beers were too rude to get up and offer their seats, I asked the hosts if they could possibly pull a chair out to accommodate the lady as she was pregnant lady and they refused!!! OMG! I should have walked out right then especially for the mediocre, overpriced food with such poor customer service! We wont be returning.

Ive been a customer of Matsu for the past 12 years, and I must say that it is, hands down, the best restaurant to visit in the area for Japanese cuisine. Customer has a choice between 3 dining areas: sushi bar, teppan bar, and regular dining area. Ive tried all 3, and each offered not only impeccable food, but unsurpassed service. I would, and often do recommend it to anyone I know who might be in the area. I sometimes find myself wishing I hadnt moved from So. Cal to the Seattle area, because I miss it so much!

Always the freshest and best shashimi. Nobu, the sushi chef is entertaining and everyone is friendly. Opens after 5:30pm, everyday. It has Tepan cooking and order off a menu style food too. The restaurant looks small from the outside since its hidden in a corner but once inside, its pretty big. They have a separate full bar as well. There is usually a wait since its a popular spot. Dont forget to get the seafood martini.. It has everything in it.

My wife and I went here for teppanyaki with some friends and the chef was very entertaining. He performed a few of the classic tricks and a few I hadnt seen before. The food was all very tasty and was served in generous portions. The wait to get into the dining area looked like it was a bit long, but we made reservations, so we were seated very quickly.

I love this restaurant. Ive been going there since the 80s. The sushi chefs at the sushi bar are great. The prices are reasonable and always good. Its like "Cheers" always a friendly face and locals to share advice to those who ask. For a change of pace, I also like the teppan room where they make delicious meals right at the table - quite a show!

We typically go here just for special occasions, but the food here is beyond delicious. If I could afford it, Id visit every week. The atmosphere is great, especially for groups, & the tappan chefs are top notch. Its usually crowded, so definitely make a reservation if you can. Also, parking can be a challenge, so arriving early is a good idea.
