Overall, Im giving Acme 5/5 regular stars for quality and also 5/5 "green" stars for social and environmental impact. First of all, the regular stars: Yesterday I had one of their goat cheese puffs ($1.50) which was great - a dollop of tart goat cheese and a few olive slices on top of flaky puff pastry - and surprisingly filling. I also had a sandwich next door at Bartavelle Café made on an Acme (sweet) baguette and it was a great testament to Acmes bread (and Bartavelles cooking). Id also highly recommend Acmes walnut and olive breads and their herb focaccia slab is outstanding. Theres usually a line out the door, but it shouldnt take more than 5 min to get through it. I think Acme deserve 5/5 "green stars" for social and environmental impact. Their bread has been made with organic flour for 17 years - sourced from Giustos. Its worth looking up Guistos - they are the foundation of Acmes breads (most of which are made purely from flour, salt and yeast - you can find ingredients for each loaf on Acmes website). They also source organic raisins, pumpkin seeds and flax seeds from Giusto and organic California sweet cream butter from the Rumiano Cheese Co. They use mostly solar power for their Berkeley bakery and now fuel all of their diesel trucks and diesel generators with renewable diesel from Golden Gate Petroleum. They make an effort to donate all leftover bread to charitable organizations, schools, and non-profits, with the remainder going into organic livestock feed. They also encourage paper waste reduction by offering a 5 cent discount if you do without a paper bag for your loaf.

Fresh artisanal bread. Acme Bread by far is my absolute favorite in the Bay Area. The rustic roll has so much flavor, the little roll is the standard Acme flavor that I know and love. The shop is very small but there is so much variety that its overwhelming to choose, especially when you can only have a handful of people inside at once and theres always a line outside. Sigh. Im not a fan of the pumpkin roll, but only because the cranberries in it are very very tart. Otherwise, the usual bread is so good - soft inside with a hardy but satisfying crust.

Awesomeness. Wanted to pickup some fresh bread for a family dinner. The service and bakery are absolutely amazing. Parking can be a little crazy and you may have to wait in line depending on when you go. The line does move fairly quickly. I suggest looking at their website to see what you want before you get there. It is totally worth it. The whole wheat sourdough and Olive bread were spectacular.

Absolutely delicious bread, made fresh daily. I see them working on each days batch when they leave the door open as I ride to work. We loved the Sour Bayard, Sweet Loaf, Whole Wheat with seed Loaf, the Cinnamon Twist, Ham and Cheese Croissant, and Jalapeno and Cheese Mini Croissant. Plan to wait in line for a bit and dont come too late because they might be out of what youre looking for.

I live within walking distance of this Alice Waters-inspired bakery, and thats a problem given all the tasty breads inside. The cinnamon walnut currant bread is a amazing substitute for a classic cinnamon roll; the mostly whole wheat cranberry walnut is fantastic; and the focaccia bread is perfect. Sold in stores nearby. Just look in the bread section of your store. Great stuff!

There are so many tasty bread choices! Made with organic flour, sweet or sour sourdough batards, boules, baguettes, rolls, pastries, whole wheat options too! This is a tiny place, with baskets of bread, and bakers in the background doing their thing. They are generous and even will share some starter with you if you bring a plastic tub.

They sell pastries here too, such as apple turnovers, cinnamon rolls, etc. Of course the bread here is fantastic. I like the "epi" myself. Its just a small storefront, with not much space inside, so line is usually outside. Shares parking lot with a cafe and wine merchant, so parking often rather a mess.

One of the reasons we would find it hard to move from the East Bay. There twice a week at least. Our favorites: Edible School Yard, anything "Rustic" (the sweet or sour baguettes are hand rolled and available only at the bakery, not at stores), Epi, and pumpkin bread (when in season)

Oh man, such good bread. You can hear it in the crunch when you break it apart. I loved the sweet batard with jam (suggested by the guy there). And, a loaf is only 2-3 dollars which is very reasonable in my perspective. Havent tried their baked goods yet, but I have high hopes.

Paying with cash and/or providing your own Acme bread bag gets you a discount. Regardless of what you do you can get top-notch, freshly-baked bread for great prices. The Pain Au Levain is a great staple, and if youre planning on doing some grilling their buns are ah-mazing.

Wait was out the door to the street but worth it! The sticky walnut bread was only about $6 but split apart into 8 pieces like monkey bread--great price. Some items seemed more expensive than in stores but you cant get it any fresher than this...still warm from the oven!

Best Jalapeño and walnut breads. To me...it is the best Bread Company. Always very crowded. The reception and cashier spaces has very limited area and can not have more than 4 people in the area..... Well the important issue here is that Acme Bread is the BEST!

The place has very fresh bread. It is always long line but it moves fast. The only thing I didnt like was the way the cashier wrap the bread. When I get in the car, I notice that one of my item is smash on the bottom. She literally just throw everything in there.

They have variety of beads including some that can satisfy my bread cravings like no other! And I love bread. The problem is that most of the time the breads that I go there for are available only sporadically throughout the day.

There was a short wait here on a Tuesday evening but I could wait an hour for this stuff. So delicious!! I had the herbed focaccia which was incredible and a pumpkin loaf that was equally good. Cant wait to try more varieties.

Though the line may look long, it moves quick! Great selection of bread from baguettes to breakfast pastry. They also donate their leftover bread to local shelters at the end of the day. Love that this store exists!

This place is to popular for its own good. Long lines every time I go there. It probably doesnt help that the place is the size of a shoe box. In this case size does not matter. Great product, great service.
