I recently went to culinary dropout with a few friends of mine for a casual dinner. Interestingly enough I wasnt eating, but that allowed me to focus specifically on the atmosphere. There was a very strong vibe as I walked in of a counter-culture hipster feel. The interior is like a mix of Anthropologie, Costco and a barn, but in the best way. Its has strong industrial notes and with hints of southwest. There was corrugated metal in some parts, the leather was dark, and the lighting is hanging anti-tank spikes covered in lights, which I found pretty cool. The restaurant is located in a warehouse with several other businesses which are all related, and the atmosphere reflects that very much. The fact that is it so open gives it a more industrial feel as well. I liked the windowed kitchen that is very visible to the eaters, which I think it always appealing in these settings. The bar was located in the center of the restaurant, separating inside and the game room. It was a very interesting looking setup, but somehow was appealing. I felt very at home in the booth. One thing that also caught my attention was the attire of the restaurant goers. It had everyone from very casual to business guys in suits, and all seemed to be comfortable. I think they have succeeded in creating an atmosphere of creativity and adventurousness, and it was reflected in their menu as well. The drinks were very creative, and so were the dishes, but they also seemed to have a lot of familiarity as well. I think its a great place to try!

The Wife Unit and myself really enjoyed our meal at this Hipster gastropub. The interior is funky and airy and puts you in a good mood when you arrive. We found the red sofa seating very comfortable and it provides an opportunity to snuggle up. The game is on at the bar for those looking for that. Service was prompt and friendly. We started with the Pretzel Fondue as it was described as "life changing." We didnt find that to be the case but it enjoyed greatly. I had the meatloaf which was excellent, even the accompanying green beans were cooked just right. My wife really enjoyed her steak. They have a great beer selection with some locals available. Our waitress seemed somewhat knowledgeable on the subject but then talked about the "drought" selection...perhaps she isnt actually old enough to drink herself? On the covered patio they have a huge outdoor games area with corn/bean hole, ping pong and other things. Well definitely come again when back in the PHX area. Update: came here for lunch on Valentines Day and there was some live music. Singer on keyboard and a guitar player. Very nice. We loved our meals.

TThe Culinary Dropout at The Yard is a GREAT place to go for food, fun, games, drinks, events or just to hang out and relax. The menu is awesome, the staff is friendly and the place is a lot of fun. The Antipasti plates are a great way to start. They also have salads, soup, sandwiches and some really good entrees. The roasted salmon is tough to pass up. Other things on the menu are Shrimp and pork belly ramen, Meatloaf, fried chicken, a bistro steak with gorgonzola that is *really* good, sweet potato cannelloni and more. Do yourself a favor and save room for the "Bourbon Black Bottom Pie" for dessert. Youll thank me, I promise. They have a full bar and a bunch of specialty drinks, too. For local brews, they serve up hops from Four Peaks, San Tan, Huss Brewing and more. The place is cool, for sure. Good for small and large groups. Private meeting space available, as well. Valet parking is available. A great addition to Downtown Tempe.

My second visit in 9 months. I love this place. The staff is friendly and provide excellent service. The food is amazing. They change the menu frequently. During my last visit I had: Yesterdays soup. Black bean. Very hearty and good spice, if you like it a little spicy. I asked for a little sour cream on the side, which tamed that down a bit. Maybe add that and some sliced avocado and that would be a grand slam... My main course was the Salmon w/Black rice. That was awesome. Really like the sauces in combination with the fresh snow peas ans roadted cauliflower. Mmmm. Ill be craving that in a coule of weeks... A I finished with the Banana Cream pie. This was interestingly good. It was served w/ sliced bananas, whipped cream and a generous dollop of dulce de leche beneath the vanilla wafer crust. Wow. The banana cream was more custard-like, which I enjoyed. Very nice flavor. A must visit when in Tempe.

I ate and drank at the Coop inside Culinary Dropout. I small bar dedicated to the 21 up crowd. It was a full service bar so I was able to indulge in a adult beverage and food. The EATS: I had the black mussels (captured in photos) with spicy sausage. The plate portion was great but each individual mussels were small (not the fault of the restaurant, just want to be as descriptive as possible for the next guest). I felt the mussels where on the bland side. DRANK DRANK: I really had fun with this experience. The Bartender gent was patient with my indecisiveness. He put me on to the Bees Knees cocktail (also captured in photos). It was refreshing and crisp. He explained in detail was the recipe called for and it was a perfect suggestion. Just hoped he crafted the drink in front of me just to give that extra gusto (everyone loves presentation)!

Not impressed at all! We got there, put our name in, went to the bar and ordered a drink (after still having to wait a while), the bar tender didnt engage at all (not necessary, but courtesy would be nice), we finished the drinks, still 45 minutes (after already waiting a good 40-45 minutes) later we are still waiting for a table! After checking with the hostess several times, and getting mixed messages several times, we left. Im sorry, but waiting an hour and a half to eat dinner is ridiculous! Thank you for ruining my birthday celebration with my family! I guess its the perfect welcome to Phoenix gift I needed, right?!? Thanks, but no thanks! I wont be returning!

No problem with the beer or food. We ordered beers and were specifically pointed to a "open seating area" by a gentlemen. After sitting down for all but 5 minutes we were kicked out by another guy because we didnt order anything from the server . The fellow who kicked us said " you are not ordering anything from the sever and we are not making any money, you need to move." Let me clarify, I understand the place is a business and needs to make money but you need to have consistency between servers on your seating. Also the guy who kicked us was very confrontational and really seemed to be on a power trip. This bar has forever lost my business.

Nasty hostess. We asked for a table, she asked if we had reservations, we did not. She didnt ask us if we wanted to wait for a table, she just said we could try to find some lounge seating. There wasnt any, so we had to come back to her and ask for a table. She reluctantly Sat us. Her large buttocks were also hanging out of a very small pair of shorts. I wouldnt normally judge on physical appearance, but her nasty attitude sure didnt help anything else shine. We were Sat shortly after by another hostess and our waiter was very good. I probably wont go back because of the awful welcome. There is lots of great dining in Tempe with out the attitude.
