Ive heard the praises of Umamai burger sung from on high for many years, so when I saw one in the Brookfield "Hudson Eats" complex, I knew I had to try out this buzzed about burger. After trying a regular Umamai burger, I feel like I have a case of the emperors new clothes, as I couldnt see what all the hubbub was about. Served on a Portuguese roll with a U burned into the top of the bun, the umamai burger announces from first glance that its not like other burgers. Biting into the relatively thick patty, surrounded by tomato aoli, your mouth is hit with a differing set of flavors than youd expect from a regular burger. Here theres no juicy mixing of hot beef with crisp lettuce and tomatoes, only a heavy flavor that I was unable to put my finger on. If this was the elusive, criticality acclaimed umamai flavor, it wasnt what cooking shows and gourmet restaurants have made it out to be. While in no way a bad burger (I did finish it after all), the next time Im in downtown Manhattan and craving a burger, Ill head across the street to Shake Shack. Admittedly, taste is subjective, so my lukewarm feelings might not be so widely shared. However, what isnt subjective was the 15+ minute wait that was needed before I could get my food. Although warned before placing my order, no justification for the delay was provided: perhaps they had lost the acclaimed recipe and were scrambling to come up with something in its place!

The restaurants here at Hudson Eats inside the Brookfiled Place are lined up nicely, along the bright, clean space. I really appreciate them making it spacious enough for people to be able to walk around, while looking for the food of your preference. We ordered our food and looked around for some seats. Another good thing about Hudson Eats is that they offer pretty good amount of seating everywhere. There was a very large eating space with a stage, where they had a live band playing music as well. If you want to be away from the noise, there were more secluded, quiet seating space alongside the back wall/window as well. The burgers and fries we ordered were excellent, yes a bit pricey but very high quality. Even though the food is excellent in every way, unfortunately, I can NOT say the same about the service. The staff here were not friendly, cold, and rude... When we asked about their original sauce, we were told to "read the sign"... Seriously? The sign only indicates the name of the sauce, without description, so we wanted to know more about the sauces, in terms of flavor and such. But we decided not to continue with the conversation. Why bother talking to someone who is completely grumpy and rude? I hope they will get more staff who knows the meaning of "customer service" in the near future. I have to give a little preference to this Umami Burger as its conveniently situated in the food court within my office complex, and its probably the vendor Ive frequented the most often. Since opening, the crowds have died down considerably, which makes it much easier to get your food and go within a reasonable amount of time. Ive fallen back on the Manly Burger most often, which comes with beer-cheddar, bacon lardons, smoked-salt onion strings, Umami house ketchup, and mustard. All burgers are cooked to a medium rare, and the patty is more sizable at this location than the Greenwich Village one, in my opinion. Definitely opt for an order of fries (Thin / Sweet Potato) and youll get the option to add up to four dipping sauces (Diablo, Jalapeno Ranch, Ketchup, and Garlic Aoili). Prices are a bit high for lunch, but its a nice place to splurge on occasion.

Umami burger is the latest West Coast fast food chain to grace us burger-deprived New Yorkers (sarcasm). While there is nothing particularly unique about the actual burger itself, compared to the likes of Shake Shack and Burger Joint, the strength of Umami lies in their variety of options. Whether it be smothering your patty in truffle oil or adding hot peppers and diablo sauce, the different options give Umami a depth that some of the staple NY chains lack. I also really like how at every location they offer one unique burger that you can only get there, for example the one located at Hudson eats offers a pastrami burger with pickle and dill mustard. Bottom Line: If youre gonna eat fast food, may as well be high quality and the options compared to Shake Shack.

UMAMI has to step it up. I dined at the Hudson Eats location in Battery Park and was BEYOND disappointed with the quality of food I received. In addition to the turkey burger being lukewarm, the bun being soggy, and the fries being downright cold/stale, I was charged close to $20 (no drink) for a lunch that would have been better prepared by a street truck. It was sub-par, overpriced, and slow to come out. What I received during my visit was less than mediocre, at best. [NOTE: This review was first sent to UMAMI Burger who didn’t bother to contact me about my experience.]

Just in town for a few days, but saw this online and had to try it. I had the K-BBQ burger and it was definitely tasty. Id have given 5 stars but the fries were lukewarm and not crispy at all, and I didnt realize they serve the burger medium-rare. The guy never asked me how Id like it cooked. Other than that the burger was pretty good. I went to the Brookfield location in the food court, so maybe this experience reflects the location and not the brand.

Superb burger. If you need some burger healing then I recommend the Manly burger made with cheddar cheese and huge chunks of bacon lardon. I like the signature Umami burger with a thin fried parmesan chip and a roasted tomato that makes the burger stand out. This is a burger with a truly unique perspective on flavor. A great quality burger is few and far between. This one is well designed with every ingredient thought through and served to perfection.

This place is nothing special. I feel like the burger size is way too small for the price you pay. There are many good places where you can eat an amazing burger that can actually fill you up and you dont have to spend too much money. The burgers taste okay but there are definitely not the best one Ive ever had.

Really glad to have been tipped off about these guys. Deep rich flavours and plenty of unhealthy sides to make lunch a little but indulgent. We tried the truffle burger and were pleased that they didnt compromise on the umami flavours with boring things like salad. Definitely would go back here.

December was an awesome month to come to this Umami burger location! They featured a different $8 burger every week. :D I also LOVE their fries... so yummy with their sauce selection--garlic aioli, ranch, spicy something... haha
