Oct. 4th 2011* Their sushi is super expensive and in my opinion, it was ok. Nothing special. But their non sushi food was AMAZING. I went in during lunch because its a lot cheaper. I had this shrimp stir fry thing and my cousin had this blue cheese steak dish. They were both amazing! It was so good! WAY better than the sushi we ordered. $18 for both our dishes and $25 for two sushi rolls. Our entrees blew me away. Our waitress was ok. She was nice and all but when pouring us water, she spilled water all over our table and pretended nothing happened. We had to ask her for napkins and ended up cleaning our own table. It was a little awkward... Other than that try their food!! April 7th 2013* I came to this restaurant every few months for their amazing lunch specials and there super duper awesome all you can eat sushi for $25. My bf and I would have their AYCES dinners to celebrate special occasions. At first, we thought it was only sushi but they had an entire menu to select from! You can choose appetizers, nigiri, sushi rolls, and even their specialty rolls! All for $25! (per person of course) this was all so wonderful!!! until they bumped up the price to $35... I am extremely disappointed... We paid over $50 for our meal and now we gotta spend $70, an extra $20 (thats almost enough for another person to have AYCES for $25!!), on the same thing we paid only $50 just a few months ago?! Thats almost a 50% increase in price!!! Service has not improved either. I asked my server for extra ginger on my next plate of sushi and when the sushi was brought I had not gotten extra ginger. I tried asking my server but he had already left which is fine because he had other tables. I waited a few minutes and noticed the host (balding guy with glasses) was helping out with tables so I thought Id ask quick. I waited until he was done assisting a table to ask him for more ginger. As he walked over and pasted us, I attempted to ask him but before a word left my mouth he gave a me a finger (pointer finger) and walked away. What a rude douche bag! Muramoto needs a better work crew... Chefs and people in the back are great; servers/host in the front suck.

Muramoto used to be one of my favorite sushi places in Madison. I stumbled across the Hilldale location first and tolerated the squeezed seating setup. Then once I found the downtown location I was extremely happy to know that I didnt have to pretty much "share" a table with annoying twits that would turn up their table talk volume as Im trying to enjoy a nice evening out. So now, fast forward to current night...we head downtown to enjoy a night of sushi only to find the relocated to Reds old location! WTH?! If it didnt work for Red Sushi why would you give up your large establishment to go to one half the size?! And then you turn it into the same setup of stacking the tables pretty much "on top of each other"!! We will no longer visit Muramoto Sushi because of the fact youve taken away the option of people being able to enjoy a peaceful evening of Sushi....instead you now have to listen to clammering loud half twit girls talk about how their life is so important. Bottom line...if you want intimacy, this is not the place. If you want great Sushi and the ability to enjoy the company in your own party and not everyone around you, may I recommend Fuji

Update: After like a year or so I decided to give them another shot with another group of friends and this time we had a MUCH better experience. The new location is very nice, the service was spot on, and the food was much better. I am adjusting my 2 star rating to 4 and I will be going back. ------- A small group of us decided to try the lunch special here and the experience was pretty lackluster. From the time we were seated to the time we got our food, about 40 minutes went by. We did a late lunchtime (1pm) and we were 1 of only 4 tables in the entire place. Our server was clearly having a bad day. The sushi chef looked very disengaged. We scarfed our food down and rushed back to work. Thank goodness we get an hour. The sushi was average and the chefs choices were uninspired. I might try Muramoto again, but it wont be soon.

As an Asian born growing up in a city where you can get fresh fish for Japanese food daily and choose from approximately 200 or more Japanese places among which 20 are top rated, Muramoto is far from satisfaction to me. Despite the questionable freshness of the fish, the sushi maker seems to be inadequate and does not interact with customer at all, even though we were sitting at the counter. We also ordered snapper head which is a seasonal dish and ribeye bowl. The beef was nice, but the snapper was slightly over cooked and the broth was unacceptably salty. However, the selection of materials shows some consideration from the chef and his team. Personally I will not recommend it to people whos familiar with authentic Japanese cuisine. Location restrains the performance of sushi place a lot.

Asian fusion meets the Midwest. Where else in Madison can you get local duck in a roll combined with mango and avocado and topped with a duck reduction sauce? The first time I tried it I realized my eyes had closed because of sensory overload. More traditional meals, hanger steak, cod, etc. for the less adventuresome. And they recently added world class sushi (I lived in Japan for four years, it is world class.) The Asian slaw is delicious and good for you. Sit at the sushi bar, along the window or in more intimate spaces further into the restaurant. Lunch is a good deal and its open all afternoon so convenient for business lunches that run late or an early meeting with plates to share that can segue into dinner. Decent wine list.

My husband, son and I went out for a celebratory dinner with my parents who had come to town. Unfortunately the dining experience and the service and the food was not what we had hoped for. We ordered off the sushi menu as well as the regular menu and the food took forever to be served. We were served at different times. We figured we would give them another chance and ordered dessert, and much to our dismay it was past 30 minutes and the dessert was no where in sight. We finally cancelled the dessert order and paid the check and headed home sadly very unsatisfied.

Bad experience. Do not get sat up by the windows during 5 degree winter weather. Restaurant week with my wife...yummy pork...so cold that we could not enjoy it. Disappointment and waste of pig. Terrrrrrible service. Ugly. Did I mention freezing? An hour later, we are still cold. First review I have ever written...unfortunately to ward people away from what could be a decent restaurant. Better luck next time, muramoto. Yes, lower case.

WOW. I can not BELIEVE this place ... So I called in for a reservation, but when I got there the manager told me that I never had a reservation and that it would be a 2 HOUR WAIT and after that, the MANAGER just LEFT and helped someone else, not even a sorry, I cant beleive that they have a manger like that. Then when I finally got a seat AT THE BAR, they didnt even ask me what I wanted to drink!!!!! I will NEVER go back again!.
