I had the worst experience EVER dining out at Chao Praya. We purchased a Groupon and were really looking forward to eating here however we were quickly disappointed. The restaurant is nicely decorated, but dimly lit and totally freezing. The waiter took our order for a sprite and diet coke but then didnt return for 30 minute - he didnt even give us a glass of water!! When we flagged him down, he said hes no longer serving our table and asked us to talk to the manager because apparently the Groupon does not include soft drinks. We checked the fine print on the Groupon and it clearly states drinks are included. After waiting another 10 minutes, we got out of our seats and walked up to the manager and told him we still have not received our drinks. He said "sorry". After a total of 45 MINUTES waiting for our drinks, we decided to leave. The manager came up to us finally and apologized without any sincerity and said - its a sunday they are busy. Needless to say, we will never ever return to this restaurant again. There are plenty of Thai restaurants in Memphis, we will be taking our business elsewhere.

I went there because I know that they have a vegetarian menu. You have to request it. Over time the quality of service has degraded. The time I came here before this last time, the server let me sit for 5 or 10 minutes without checking on me, even though they had not brought me a fork and spoon. The last time I went there, the owner himself told me that it wasnt worth it to keep making the vegetarian food, and I said thats OK, but why still offer (hide) the menu? The owner laughed and soured his face and said that its just not worth it. He checked on me once while I was eating. But it was not with the earnest of customer service that should be #1 at any resturant! The vegetables are very sparse, and cost a lot to add extra vegetables, which brings your meal to the way it should be. There are better places with better service. They can do much better.

I came here for lunch on a weekday without any reservation and my party of 4 was seated right away. They were busy but Im glad there wasnt a wait. I only tried one dish and it was extremely delicious. My friend who ordered the same 4-Spice Duck Noodle Soup felt the same way. The duck leg was the highlight being crispy and nicely spiced on the outside, with the duck meat on the inside being super juicy and flavorful too. Its served in a five spice broth with thin rice vermicelli and bok choy. Its really the perfect quick winter lunch that will warm you up and leave you happy and full.

Ive eaten here about a dozen times & my wife has been w/me 3 of those times over the last 5 years when I get to Memphis (we live 3 hours away). We moved to northern Arkansas from Las Vegas where there is a plethora of great restaurants. Chao Praya is up there w/the best of the best. My only complaint EVER was my last visit & they were out of Singha, a Thai beer. Not much of a complaint. Eat here. You will be very, very glad.

*** CLOSED *** I a sad to report Chao Praya was closed for business when I stopped by on 29 September 2012. The hand-written sign on door said "Close Tempory [sic] -- it looked like it had been there a while. There was also a vinyl banner hanging on the building announcing something Dragon Chinese buffet coming soon. I hope they open up somewhere else. This was some of the best Thai food I have had anywhere!

The next time that I call and ask you if you deliver, dont ask me"for how many" and when I said, for one you tell me, "I dont have time to do one delivery, can you call somewhere else" OMG!! How rude, but thats ok not only will I call somewhere else to spend my money, I will tell as many people that will listen how rude you were Mr. and to not spend theirs with you either

I really wish this place were closer to my house, although it might be dangerous because Id probably eat there ALL THE TIME. Ive always said Memphis needed a reasonably priced and yet delicious Thai restaurant, and this place is exactly that! Wonderful atmosphere, DELICIOUS curry, and great prices. Now if only theyd move to midtown!

Ordered Spicy Basil Veg Fried rice. There was not a hint of Basil, not spicy by average standards, very few vegetables. it seemed like rice sauteed with soy sauce. Discourage getting anything from this restaurant. This is my 3rd visit to this restaurant and it has become progressively worse.

general chicken reallly good, tom yum rice noodle soup , with beef chicken and shrimp. a liitle bit spicy and a little sour taste. make you want to gi back. since may 16. they put the thai chef from chao praya thai food taste is so authentic. so. unique. you need to go try.

As others have noted, the inside of the restaurant is very lovely. I enjoyed the music they had playing, and the service was some of the best I have experienced in Memphis (which doesnt say much, nonetheless this place was good). The food was also delicious.

I love China Dragon, I had the Hot &Sour soup. Wasnt feeling well and for some reason this soup makes me feel better. Everything Ive tried has been delicious, Ive been coming here since 2000. Love It!

Tried it in the past and it was ok , recently went there again and its changed, they have new furniture and new servers. Great food and great service, the Thai is amazing.

The vegetarian menu is amazing! They make great fake meat, including fake chicken, beef, shrimp, and pork. Great prices for great food and amazing service!
