I got off work late last night and decided to try out a bar for a few drinks. I decided on this divey, unpretentious establishment in Ballard after doing a little research. I like public houses with sincere people out to have a good time. I did find that. It was karaoke night and people were all over it. They bring out karaoke in the evenings 3-4 nights a week according to the event board mounted on the back wall. The server treated me with suspicion all night after I fumbled with my wallet to produce my debt card. I had just bought a pack of cigarettes at the Safeway down the street where I decided last minute to dig out my club card for the purchase, which was buried somewhere in the rarely-used section of my cardholders. In my haste to get out of the store and have a smoke, I didnt return Cardland to its more familiar mess. So, I get to the bar and ask for a drink. The bartender politely asks what Ill be having. I order my drink and produce my wallet, but my debt card isnt where I normally keep it. Wanting to just get an awkward moment over with, I start pulling cards out to find my debt card. I found it and handed it to her before putting the rest of them away. This is where my experience started to turn sour. Instead of asking for my I.D. (like she should have done), she starts treating me with suspicion. She repeatedly asks me for the name on my card. At one point she feigned not knowing which card among the others on tab was mine, so she flashed me the cards of other customers and asked which one belonged to me. When I tell her Im ready to close my tab, I see her take my card to the goddamn kitchen and show it to someone before running it.

Was excited to find a new dive, drinks were meh at best (i ordered well vodka cokes, Im not remotely picky and thats saying something) and i got a blt on recommendation that was 2/3rds just bread. Seriously I have garbage expectations and was shockingly disappointed. I bet if you befriend the bartender itd be different but tipping $2 a drink didnt help. They have a good smoking /drinking patio though.

I love that the Waterwheel has live music and dancing outdoors on Seattle summer nights. Its a small, grungy bar tucked into a Ballard neighborhood that would be all too easy to miss out on. Aim for a warm summer night when a band is playing and put on those swing shoes for a great time. Get there early because the band stops by 10pm, I am guessing because of noise, laws and neighbors...

We went for brunch. Good food, friendly bartender, nice rowdy crowd. But Id rather go there for drinks. It just doesnt scream "brunch" when you sit down; just a little too dark for my tastes. But it seems like a great place to have some drinks with your friends. Everybody was in a great mood.

Really fun place for weekend Karaoke! Ladies, if you happen to notice that some guy is following you around (like I did) tell the bar staff and they will help you lose the tag along and avoid the creepy factor.

If you are looking for a dodgy pub where you can meet a few locals then you have found it. Cold beer and salty bar food are par for the course. Karaoke on Friday makes for great vibes.
