We went because the reviews were good. I feel like I was scammed out of $80 and I wish I just paid for the drinks and left. Their hibachi is a joke and I bet $10 that the local generic Chinese restaurant can do a better dish with a wok. The shrimp werent seared hibachi style nor even flavored. Think boring pan cooked shrimp. $22 was such a waste just for that, oversauced soggy vegetables, and old white rice. They had to remake the dish twice due to having plastic in the rice and being cold. Both times they made the dish- it was cold. The sushi was lack luster. I get better sushi at my local grocery store up north for 60% cheaper. The flavors didnt blend well in some of the specialty rolls and Im quite disappointed this is THE sushi place on the beach strip. The service was full of excuses and lack of attention. No napkins, silverware, refills, etc. We even got to hear how horrible it was to be her first day. The manager never once approached our table and I regret everything but the $7 dollar sake. They offered us a 10% OR remake the hot plated food. Good service is to at least do both. Do NOT eat here. Its a waste of your money and VA beach will have much better Japanese food than this joke of a eatery. Waste of my time and money.

The food was actually very good. It was well prepared and large portions. However, the service was absolutely abysmal. We sat near the sushi bar and it was a full 45 minutes before the sushi chef even BEGAN to start on our order. Our waitress ignored us most of the time and never offered any sort of apology or reasoning for the long delay other than "Were just slammed." Sorry, but that is not an excuse. At one point she even appeared on the floor with her purse over her shoulder and told her boss she was going home. I guess she was told "no" because she stayed, but her attitude had noticeably changed. When our order finally got to the table it was short one roll that never arrived. As the evening wore on her remarks, while always polite on the outside, had an undeniably snarky and sarcastic undertone. Not a problem....she earned herself a $1.00 tip on a $50 bill. I would probably go back, but not on a "busy" night.

We were visiting VB during a Fall Nor-easter and since the beach wasnt much of a draw - we visited the local restaurants! :-) Soya on 31st Street was FABULOUS! The service was prompt and VERY friendly. We ordered the lunch special - a terrific value at just under $10. I had the scallops and my wife had the fish. Everything from the soup, salad, Cali-roll (one of the best Ive ever had), seafood, and even the green-tea ice cream to finish was excellent. There was plenty of food, but we decided to also try to Volcano roll, which turned out to be a meal unto itself! We took some leftovers of that home, but it was a further confirmation that they know what theyre doing at Soya... Delicious! We had a very nice time and will CERTAINLY return the next time were in the VB area. If you like sushi or are just looking for a great find, swing into Soya Sushi Bar & Bistro on Laskin Rd.

The waitress was not very customer-service oriented, a big difference from the level of service we are held to at the hotel. She did not ask when we wanted the order ready for carryout, and when we called back again to ask when it would be done we were told it was already made. Thank goodness we were able to leave for lunch early! They didnt even call back to say it was ready, or tell us how long it would take, lucky we called again. The rice was undercooked, the shrimp wasnt de-veined, the shrimp tempura far below average, and when we found out that one order was a Nigiri, not a Sushi roll, they didnt offer any empathy or alternate options, just defensive excuses. Will not be ordering again.

Great food but terrible service. We visited this place based on good reviews, but our experience was not the best. As soon as we got to our table, the waiter took our drink order. After that we spent about 30 minutes waiting for someone to take our foodo order. We ordered several sushi rolls and two miso soups. The rolls took a while to arrive and we never got our soups. The sushi was dellicious. After asking our waiter about soups, she did not appologize, just said it will take a minute to get the soups if we wanted them. For desert, we ordered fried ice cream. After that we spent another 30 minutes waiting for our desert. Just terrible service. I would not recomend this place.

Our experience was not good. Sure... The ambience is relaxed and nice. Food was decent but overpriced, nothing spectacular. (Come for the sushi, its far better than their hibachi.) The service we had was poor. We had to remind the waiter to bring us our menu, take our drink order, and then he rushed us to order our food. Then he didnt even get our order right. Then he insulted my friend and mocked her for needing a fork. Too much money for a mediocre experience. Just pass on this one. There are way better ones. Im not sure how anyone would give this place a good rating.

hi, we went in there last week, and they brought check for $105.58, so I asked for the print out and there were 2 more $18 dishes we did not order and we did not eat. I pointed to these mistakes, so they brought a new bill with 1 new dish in it we did not order. the check was $75 now. I pointed on that "mistake", so finally I got the right bill of $65. (compare to first $105.58). 4 days later at my bank statement I see 2 charges for that day from "Soya" $109.44 and $65. I called they and they told me to bring them the bank statement. i am already at NYC. what to do?

Ive never dined in, always ordered to go, so I cant really review too much on the Service or the Atmosphere, although the hostess/cashier has always been kind and efficient when I pick-up, and the inside seemed warm and romantic. The sushi is pricy compared to other restaurants, and I only order from here once every couple of months because of that, *BUT* it is *ALWAYS* delicious, and to me, *VERY* worth the occasional big bill. They have a pretty unique menu, and have always had my order ready quickly.

Been eating here for over a year now. The service has always been amazing. Everyone is friendly and attentive. Their sushi is very fresh and delicious. Please also keep in mind that because theyre at the beach, the prices arent cheap, but you pay what you get for. I highly recommend buying their Groupon or Amazon Local coupon if you never tried their sushi, but its only available during certain times of the year. Tony is a hilarious and an amazing chef. Please continue making wonderful sushi Tony!

Absolutely recommend this place if you like sushi, or just Japanese food in general! And the interior is beautifully kept and just very nice, with comfy seating.
