First I want to say the waitress that waited our table was very good and very proffesional. She was the very best part and only good part of our expierience at the Silver Diner in Reston, Va. We walked in and were impressed by the very nice decor and the cleanliness of the environment. First impression was this was going to be a nice expierience. Then while looking at the Menu we were both a bit distracted. I couldnt really find the flow of it. It seemed a bit disorganized and maybe a few readings of it would start to make sense but should you have to make sense of the menu? The flow of it was almost frustrating. But also the noise level made it a bit difficult to focus. The radio was abit loud, the volume from the patrons was a loud hum and on top of that one of the servers was Vacuming with a vacum that had this REALLY, REALLY high pitched whine that left a ringing in my ears for several minutes after it was shut off. The expierience is beggining to decline but we are still looking forward to a great meal! We were starved and hunger makes for a great sauce. We both decided on a burger. I ordered a medium cooked burger and the person I was with ordered a medium well burger. Mine came out Ok... a little undercooked but I was willing to live with it as I do enjoy a bit of pink in my burger but the person I was with wanted Medium well and was served a nearly rare burger! The manager comes over and gives a half hearted attempt to redeem the kitchens mistake by offering to cook it more... It was requested medium well, my companion says "I do not want a grey, tuff piece of ground meat, just no pink. The manager replies ""Ok WELL done then". What came back was a GREY, VERY TUFF piece of ground beef.. All faith lost now, the person Im with doesnt trust to order anything else off the menu as they cant get a burger anywhere near correct what faith is there that they can get anything else right... No thank you just bring the check please. My belief is that this "Healthy menu" is a great idea but not neccesarily fresh. The burger patties or more then likely preformed frozen patties that are brought in which is why the inconsistancy in cooking them. Not properly thawed therefore resulting in undercooked burgers and GW no stomach problems from eating unproperly thawed meats. Most places that dont get it right and the food is so so I would just move on and let it go but the following is what instigates me to leave this review: The manager that handled our table was complaining to their staff about our table not being satified with what we were served. Then members of staff that did not serve our table, cook our food, or have any contact with us, were openly and LOUDLY speaking to each other, in Spanish, about our table. Very Unprofessional but, people can be imature and unproffesional, especially when their management is no better. But as they spoke they started feeling impowered by each others approval and the things they said became more and more derogatory, crude and truly disgusting about my companion and myself. I truly have never been so insulted by an establishment in my life. Eventually they made eye contact with us and realized that indeed the "Gringos" did understand them and they started back stepping and changed there tone very quickly. Needles to say it did not result in a pleasent expierience, but one I definatly will not repeat at the Silver Diner. Hopefully it is just the Reston location that has such an unprofessional staff and this was just the wrong day to be there.

To be truthful, I like this place more for its people watching potential than for its food. I stopped in for lunch, was greeted by an elderly woman who was quite cheerful and helpful. At her suggestion, I sat at the counter, and the lady behind it was friendly and competent. It was also clear that she was familiar with most of the clientele at that time of day, and that the various "regulars" were a number of interesting men and women retired from various professions. It seemed a tiny niche of traditional diner society. The food was OK. It gave the impression of management trying to elevate classic diner fare without a real grasp of how to do it. For example, there were cranberries in the coleslaw. These cranberries did not add any range to the flavor profile of the coleslaw, nor did they improve the mouthfeel or texture but they were a different color, and perhaps considered seasonally appropriate. The coffee was bland and a deal too weak (of course, thats a matter of opinion). The food, is, however, fresh, and not loaded with the usual synthetic preservatives, so theres that. All in all, not bad. If you are hungry, and like people watching, youll have a good time.

Extremely disappointed!!!! I was excited about their new menu, their push to use healthier ingredients and providing more attention to food allergies. I talked my husband into going. I ordered according to their menu for gluten free and informed the waitress that I also could not have dairy. I clearly stated at least three times specifically that this means no milk, butter or cheese in my food. My order still came with the potatoes that I cannot have (due to gluten) cooked into my food. I ate 75% of the omelet before I realized the potatoes were inside the food. I thought at that time they must have used fresh potatoes since they knew the other potatoes had gluten. When I asked the waitress about this we realized they did not adhere to my food allergies and I now get to spend the next 7-10 days reacting to this allergy exposure. I am very clear that I was exposed to gluten and I suspect also to dairy. In addition, I dont think the bill was correct. We ordered steak and eggs + a farmer omelet with 2 waters and it cost $40. They did take all the charges back and we had no charge, but that does not reverse the damage it has now done.

It’s been a while since I’ve been to the Silver Diner, and I’ve noticed that they have really done a lot to improve the quality of food. They have an outstanding menu, and from what I’ve seen, they have something for everyone. However, for those people with particular tastes, it may be difficult to decipher gluten-free menu items, or even vegetarian dishes. One can taste the difference in the produce because it is locally-grown. Their salads are on the money, especially the summer citrus salad. They should re-name this to be a fruit salad! It has strawberries, cranberries, mango slices, and walnuts. This is all contained within a base spinach salad. The citrus vinaigrette dressing made the salad even healthier! They have a laid back environment where you can bring your friends for milkshakes or even your entire family. By the way, the milkshakes are real ice cream and they mix it right in front of you if you sit at the counter. The wait list tends to move quickly and the overall prices are on the low to moderate end. It’s a great family restaurant for everyone to enjoy!
