Hunan East is a Chinese family owned restaurant where 3 of the brothers work there on a daily basis. Mark who is one of the brothers and Head Chef does the majority of the cooking. All of the food is prepared fresh daily to include some of the best soups in the area. For example, the dumplings are made from scratch including the dough and the filling inside which is a mixture of pork and vegetables. Joe who is the Sushi Chef is highly skilled at his craft, and the restaurant makes so much of it, you can guarantee the seafood is always fresh. If you work in the area I would suggest checking out the lunch specials which are generous and reasonably priced and run Mon-Fri. To the recent poster who suggested they are not family friendly, on the contrary, all of the them have children running from the very young to college age, and they are frequently at the restaurant. Since you also posted a review for the Hair Cuttery, and must be local, I suggest you get to know the business owners on a more personal level before posting reviews based on your one-time experiences. And since your picture points to the fact that you are not Asian, I would be highly suspect of your suggestion on how any Asian dish should be properly prepared. I am nothing more than a frequent patron of this restaurant but also a fan of their food and hospitality. If you have not tried it, I would highly suggest trying Hunan East.

We (3 year old and I) went shopping at the local store and stopped for lunch. the day was over cast and I couldnt see very well the restaurant, the lights are very dim. its not a child friendly place, the staff rolled their eyes and tried to hide me in the corner because of my child. I requested a new place, closer to the window, so we could see our plates. they placed my in the middle despite open tables next to the window. They also got on my sons case for touching the glass. too many finger prints. (well, they could of provided a booster or high chair. )The item I ordered was 75% onion and the rest mix veg and chicken curry and very spicy. The Fried rice was flavored with a spice instead of cooked with soy sauce and egg. (I worked years at an Chinese rest.) It took me getting up to leave before they stopped me and said I needed to wait and pay the check at the table, instead of up front. So we waited for the check and waited for the return before taking off. I give this place an honest 3 because overall my experience would not prompt me to return and the food was so-so. But I admit the modern look is nice (but dark-lit) and the place was clean which is a bonus and some of the staff were friendly. (maybe those people have kids, so they know how hard it is)

When my boyfriend and I have a craving for Chinese food, we immediately turn to Hunan East. Although it can be a little pricy when it comes to dinner (around $20, but serves about 3-4), the price of the lunch special (around $8) is excellent! The lunch specials include some of the most popular dishes (Kungpao chicken, General Tso, etc.) and it all comes in a very convenient container which probably holds enough food for at least two meals (depending on how hungry you are). The owner as well as the staff are very friendly and are very good at remembering their regular guests. Personally, I think the food is much better than the nearby China King. My boyfriend and I usually end up ordering the Orange Chicken and Hunan Chicken lunch specials which are really delicious!

i was very hesitant to order from yet another Chinese place. Ive had bad experiences over the years with most of the places around Reston. my son really wanted some Chinese so. ..i ordered from here. i got the general Tso and he got the fried dumplings. i got us 2 shrimp rolls. i didnt like them. They are not the normal hot crunchy ones. They are made of cabbage or something. it didnt clarify that on the website. go ahead and order. .. i did around lunch time. will return.

This is our neighborhood Chinese restaurant, and its been renovated and is wonderful! The decor is updated and very nice; the staff is friendly, efficient and helpful; and the food is excellent. They do a nice egg foo young and the General Tsos Surprise is excellent if youre a vegetarian. We also like the Hunan Chicken. The sushi is nice, too -- very fresh and tasty. Definitely recommend checking it out, especially if you havent been there since the renovation.

I ordered the chicken and broccoli lunch combination take out from here and the chicken was orange...I have had chicken and broccoli lunch combinations from other Chinese restaurants and the chicken has never been colored orange. The fried rice also has an off taste to it. Almost as if the food is not cooked to order. For this awkward encounter I rate it 2 stars and disliked the restaurant.

Ordered $70 worth of food for 8 people and it was not good. Most of the dishes were the typical: General Tsos, Sesame Chicken, etc and no one liked it, had to throw most of it away. Maybe it was an off day but nothing tasted right and was over cooked, chewy and burnt, very disappointing and was upset I spent that much money. Probably wont try again.

Food is better than the usual Chinese places at least the food I order. The hot & and sour soup is one of the best Ive had. Ive been a customer for many years and Ive yet to be disappointed. Delivery is usually very fast. You can get Sushi also. All around great take out and delivery experience.

Or as I call this place, East the Beast... I moved out of state several years ago, and oh how I mourn it! They have ruined me and I am unable to eat Chinese food from anywhere else. East the Beast is THE STANDARD for Chinese food. - From a SERIOUS foodie!!

My family always goes here for their tasty food. Some personal favorites are the Sesame Beef and Shrimp Fried Rice. They have a very comfortable and family-friendly environment with great, fast service. I would definitely recommend eating here or carry-out!

When you dont feel like cooking and just want to have good old Chinese food, this is a great place. I never had a bad dish there. All their dishes are quite good, and service is fast. My kids and I always order the corn soup, it is great.

I have yet to find anything I dont like there. My son and I love the sushi. My wife and I love the stir fry and other dishes. The people there are super friendly and always remember who you are and what you like!

I found a piece of glass in my lo mein meal! Very scary! Luckily I caught it and didnt swallow any of it (I chewed on it and felt it crunching on my teeth and got it out of my mouth).

I love this place. I have tried many Chinese restaurants around the DC metropolitan area, I have to say their food is the best. The staffs are very professional and friendly.

Food is very tasty. I havent had a bad dish yet. Love their take on kung pao chicken (and more veggies and light on the peanuts). Will definitely be a return customer
