Sumo San was my favorite restaurant when I was living in Richmond over the past year (2015-2016). I was a regular during the Happy Hour on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 5-7pm, when rail drinks and select beers are $2.50 and sushi and rolls are $2.50 and $3.50 respectively. All of the staff works really hard and are super friendly. The quality of the sushi is EXCEPTIONAL (especially for the happy hour prices). Ive been eating sushi at different places for years and Sumo San is my all time favorite. The decor is quirky and nostalgic, in that you can tell the place has enjoyed a long history of loving customers. I recommend doing a sake bomb if you have time, its an experience you shouldnt miss. As far as sushi recommendations go, I stuck to the classics and can say all of the raw fish rolls are great, especially the Spicy Salmon Roll which actually has RAW salmon (as opposed to cooked or a raw fish "slaw" Ive seen used at many places) spiced with spicy mayo and hot sauce on top so that the flavor of the salmon remains. Also try the Salmon Skin Roll! Its crunchy fried salmon skin topped with sweet eel sauce, almost like a delicious dessert paired with other saltier rolls! Anyway, you get the idea, I love this place.

Good food, really good specials. 3 Stars off for the owner nearly throwing our group out because of something someone did (who wasnt even in our group it turned out) at a past date. The long story short is, we had a friend who knew these guys who were very disrespectful to the restaurant a few weeks prior. It seemed like the owner wanted some retribution, and so he took it out on several members of our group, when in reality only one person even knew the people who were disrespectful. I think there was a bit of confusion and he perhaps assumed some of the members were there at that time, so he was basically losing his composure, claiming he wanted so badly to refuse service to all of us. Regardless, in the end we apologized for the past actions, and had exceptionally good service from the surrounding staff so we tipped accordingly.

Honestly, the better joint was Moshi Moshi in carry town (also owned by sumo San), but absurdly rising rent and an offer to buy all the restaurant equipment including furniture by an outside concern closed that beautiful. Sadly that means the quality Japanese fare in the city has been scaled back from finer Japanese, to casual dining. Make no mistake though. I lived I. Japan for a year. So far this is the best you can get in the city hands down. Not considering Sticky Rice which is so fusion it belongs in its own category. While you here try the fried avocado. Also their Sashimi Platter is the bomb, try ordering with spicy ponzu. Would rate 5, but the decor and restaruant could use an update.

Having frequented many, many sushi joints in Richmond, as well as some of the highest rated establishments in more renowned locales like NYC, I still regard Sumo San as the bar by which the others are judged. Most, if not all, still fall short of Sumo Sans collective experience. In particular the sashimi is the best deal around yet excellent quality, and the accompanying ponzu sauce is spectacular. The miso soup, bland at so many other establishments, is delightful. Specialty rolls, Hot Nights, the hand rolls if youre really on a budget..and huge teriyaki plates. Cant say enough, love this place.

I find Sumo San to be a really fun atmosphere. They have a very good selection of sushi and sashimi for an ok price. I tend to eat here more for the atmosphere than the food though and have several other Japanese restaurants I prefer far more. Sumo San is much, much cleaner than Sticky Rice, but it is not as clean as some of the other sushi places I like better. Seating is usually readily available, which is a welcome change from Sticky Rice.

Sumo San is probably the best sushi in Richmond. We have eaten at almost every other sushi place and Sumo San has the freshest fish and best tasting rolls. They also have quite a few unique items on their menu for non-sushi fans. The Spinach Tofu and the Rainbow Roll are excellent choices. Parking is a bit of a nightmare, but it is well worth it and the owner is a sweetheart. You wont regret going here:-)

We were so happy our friend took us here! The food was fantastic, and our server was very nice. We loved the low key atmosphere. I had tonkatsu served with tempura fried asparagus, and my partner had a teriyaki chicken combo with sushi and Miso. Everything was served hot and fresh, and the fried items were light and crispy. We will definitely visit again when we pass through Richmond!

Went to their happy hour. It wasnt full or too busy but the food took a long while to arrive anyhow, and when it did the rice on all the rolls was dry. I had sweet potato, philly, and salmon rolls and none were very good. Carytown Sushi isnt perfect, but their happy hour is a better deal and the sushi is just so much better. Staff was nice so there is that!

Come here on Wednesdays for the best sushi deals in town! Perfect for groups of friends or curl up in a booth or small table by the windows with a date! The sushi is made right in front of you and its the best sushi you will ever have! Get sake bombs for a fun time and interactions with your waiter - trust me! Take out available as well!

We love Sumo-San. Their excellent sushi, good drinks, and laid-back atmosphere are reminiscent of the late, great, legendary Tokyo Rose in Charlottesville. I will gladly drive to Richmond for this place. In particular, favorites include the Caterpillar Roll (not real caterpillars - its got avocado on top) and the seared white tuna.

The sushi is always top notch here. Never had a bad roll. The owner/manager is very welcoming. Sake bombs are a whole production. The price is right for both Shockoe and RVA in general compared to other places. Specialty rolls are cheaper here than anythere!

Alongside Moshi Moshi, I think this is the best sushi place in town. The freshest fish, the best rolls, the best sashimi, etc. The service is also good.

It was ok, their carrots were not cut thin enough and kept hitting the top of my mouth as I chewed. the sushi rice tasted alittle bland, nothing special.
