BBQ21 recently opened up in Fairfax ,and I was pretty curious about them, as they are known for their James Cheese deung galbi entree. The hubs and I came here to grab some lunch, and I knew that I wanted to try this specialty! Its under the BBQ21 Special, S1s Grilled Pork Ribs with Cheese. Now, I love cheese, but Id had an unpleasant experience in the past with cheese being in Korean food (particularly in kimbops), so I was a little weary; however, Im so glad I got to try it out! This combo is great for 2 people - a cast-iron tray that is compartmentalized comes with marinated pork ribs on the side (with up to 2 choices for the sauce: Bulgogi flavor, Spicy, Extra Spicy, and BBQ - we opted for the BBQ flavor and the Spicy); the ribs come already pre-grilled and the marinated in the sauces); then, there is a nice generous area with shredded mozzarella and vegetables (like jalapeno slices, carrots, and peas), another small area with ddukboki (elongated rice cake with a spicy sauce), and another little area with corn with shredded mozzarella cheese sprinkled on top. This iron tray is set on top of the grill that is located at the center of your table; it heats up pretty quickly, and you see the cheeses starting to melt. Once the cheese gets all melty and gooey, the server shuts off the flames and youre encouraged to begin. You grab a rib, dip it in the melted cheese (it may be difficult for some to scoop some, but try using the rib as like a fork and twirl the cheese around on the meat), and chow down! I actually preferred the Spicy-flavored with the cheese, whereas the hubs preferred the BBQ one. It added an interesting element to the rib, and it wasnt as overwhelming as I thought it would be! The ddukboki was way too spicy for me, but the corn with the cheese was pretty good (wished there were more!). I liked that they also give you disposable gloves so that its less of a mess and you dont have to worry about using up tons of napkins! The meal also comes with unlimited trips to their modest salad bar, filled with fresh olive-oiled kale (YUM!), lettuce, broccoli, and spicy string beans; there is an array of dressings as well as shabu-shabu sauces (definitely try their Sesame dressing - it is delicious!). Service was friendly, and they currently decreased the price for the S1 combo ($4 off). BBQ21 is a korean BBQ/shabu shabu place with a twist. Their specialty dish is the cheese baby back ribs, a dish that is cooked in the kitchen but kept warm tableside by the korean bbq grill. The ribs come out on a large rectangular pan in whatever spices you choose, ranging from teriyaki to super spicy. Also in the pan is a side of korean spicy rice cake (ddukbokki) and some warm cheese corn salad. But most of the pan is filled with mozzarella cheese with jalapenos sprinkled throughout. As the cheese melts, you slather on a spoonful of melted cheese onto the rib and then eat them together. It is best eaten with a disposable glove which they give you so it doesnt get messy. The ribs are cooked well, seasoned with a thick BBQ sauce and the whole experience is interactive and fun :) they also cook fried rice on the pan immediately after and youll definitely want to save room for it, its delicious! Also their portions are pretty generous, so you will definitely leave stuffed! They also have normal korean BBQ menu as well as a combination of korean street food items and traditional meal options. So far we have not gone wrong when we came here. Definitely will become a frequent flyer here! UPDATE: Since we first started coming here we have tried a number of their other dishes and they are all excellent. We had their samgyupsal (pork belly) which was fantastic, they also have a variety of spicy dishes covered in cheese which is always delicious, and their sushi was surprisingly good. Their service is impeccable as usual, although during busy times you may have to wait a few minutes but overall very very happy! Love BBQ21

Food was SOOO GOOD! The staff was so professional and super nice. Even when my 6 month old got annoyingly loud, screaming and crying. They asked if there was anything we needed and a one of the ladies came over to play with him a little with a toy truck. The entire restaurant was really clean, even the bathroom (which Im really big on)... To me, that says a lot about how clean the kitchen - where they cook our food - will be! We live pretty far from here (2 1/2 hours); but we will definitely return. Just because the food, the atmosphere, and the overall experience were just that great!

This is a go to place! It has great service, quality food, and the cheese and galbi was creative too. I am Korean myself and I was impressed with the quality of the food. Also, the restaurant is not very noisy. If your looking for a place that you and your family and/ or friends can enjoy, this is the place.

My favorite place ever. I love eating barbecue and my kids like to eat cold noodle soup, called Mulnaengmyun. Actually I am not a big fan of cold noodle soup but rest of my family said delicious. Servers are nice and foods are awesome, I will definitely be there again.

BBQ21 IS AWESOME!! The interior of the restaurant is very clean and well designed. The food is fabulous and the workers are very kind, friendly, and very efficient. I give this restaurant a five star and definitely would reccomend people to try this place out!

We stopped in for a quick lunch after shopping. Having only searched for "bbq" we were surprised that it was Korean BBQ but we decided to stay and were glad we did. The staff was very attentive, the food arrived quickly and everything was hot and very tasty.

Didnt know how upscale the place was till we got there. The food was good, but it seemed to be slightly expensive. Might not visit there if I just wanted some Korean BBQ, but a good place to have a nice date night.

Excellent food! Its BBQ and cheese, the greatest foods out there, and they combined it! Tip:if you do order the BBQ and cheese put the heat at a simmer after minute, unless like me you enjoy crispy cheese.
