When I lived on Oahu(second home) I would visit all the local places(L&L,Zippys,Hanaras, Mitsuken, etc) because their food was ono and the prices were reasonable, and the portions was enough to fill you up. And most of these places would be able to let you substitute certain things without an additional charge. So my family decided to try Hula Bar and Grill. I gave this place 1 star for cleanliness and nice decor. The staff was nice. The food price is too high. For appetizers we had poke, crispy pork gau gee,and root beer sticky ribs. The poke and ribs were fine but the crispy pork gau gee did not taste like pork. our entrees seemed like eternity to wait for as we asked several times about our order and was told it was coming. We also asked if we could substitute one of the scoops of rice for a scoop of mac salad and was told it would be $2 extra. This is already bad customer service. Any place in Hawaii would say yes to our request because they want you to be happy and satisfied and come back. Our entrees were teriyaki steak(well done) with rice and macaroni salad, chicken katsu, kitchen sink fried rice, and onion rings. The steak was dry and burnt, chicken katsu tasted bland and frozen, and the fried rice seemed like rice fried in soy sauce with itty bits of spam. And heres the icing on the cake. The onion rings seemed okay since they were huge pieces, but when I bit into one, I was surprised to find a small chunk of what tasted like fried seasoned cream cheese. I was curious about the filling so i broke the filling apart and discovered a glob of flour, it wasnt cream cheese it was just flour, bleh! Bleh! Ugh! Overall I wasnt impressed with the food or their prices. I would not recommend going here if you want to try local grinds from Hawaii. If youre in the Baltimore area checkout Taste of Aloha in Arbutus. Please read reviews before going here. Aloha!

I would give this restaurant 0 stars if I could. A cousin of ours along with a coworker had been promoted earlier that day and we had reserved a few tables for our visit. Our party included about 15-20 people. No problems there. With regards to the food, it was okay. My boyfriend and I got a simple hamburger. Others in our group were not impressed with the food at all. The problem with this place, and why Im giving it one star, is the way they handled our check. After our meal was finished and we began asking for our individual checks (mind you they had not asked how it will be seperated while taking our order) they brought out one giant receipt for $684 and said the check can only be split three ways. Ridiculous. Someone in our party approached the GM about our situation but he was no help at all! I was told he shrugged his shoulders said "thanks for your advice" and turned around and walked away. i dont understand why they couldnt go back, void that check, and ring everything back up on separate checks. Customer service was terrible, the GM doesnt care, we will never go back.

My friend and I decided to have our promotion dinner here on December 4th. We were a bit apprehensive because the place was new, but decided to give this place a shot. We had a huge party, approx 15plus. Knowing DC traffic, a big portion of my group were running late. I understood that because the place was busy and my group were running late they had to give away one of my tables. I still had high hopes and was excited to try to food. The waitress was very friendly, but the services was super slow. It took over 20 minutes to get my first drink and people had to ask 2 or 3 times get get their refills. The good wasnt that great especially for its price. I ordered the Hulu-Huli chicken, it tasted like regular BBQ chicken. Whenever you have a big group of people, this place only splits the checks 3 ways. I was stuck with, I was stuck with a $288 bill because (like most people) not everyone carries cash. Overall, I was not impressed with the quality of service or the food. I will NEVER return here. again.

Moving here from Oahu 5 years ago after being in the islands for 8 years and also being Polynesian, I had high hopes for this place. The food here is not the kind you can get at a strip mall in Makaha, or off the H1 at Kam Hwy. I had the chicken katsu plate, which is suppose to have a thick breading. The breading on this was non existent, also the chicken breast was from the freezer. You could tell by the over watery taste with every bite of katsu. Also the chicken had no flavor, very bland. The poke was nice and was about the only thing I enjoyed. Our spam fried rice was soggy and had 3 pieces of spam, my buddy ordered a well done teriyaki steak which was burnt over done. So disappointed in the quality of the food. No where near Hawaiian food. And it was $3 for an Aloha Sun juice!!! Look up aloha Sun juice on Amazon and you can see what they cost.

Wow, I just read through the reviews and am totally shocked. We stumbled in Hula Girls last night for dinner, while walking around Shirlington. This place ended up being a 5 star eating establishment. We started with Hawaiian Beers recommended by the bartender. We then ordered appetizer, edamame...best i have ever had. They actually grill them...mmmmm good! We watched a few dishes go out to other people, settled on ordering the kalbi and the root beer short ribs. The food was awesome and the sides were tasty too. The price was acceptable for the area...and the value for the food was terrific. Try this place, I can not see how you could be disappointed. We loved the place and cant wait to go back.

Great decor and customer service. Musubi was good, but thats where the positives end. Food was inauthentic and unsatisfying. The recipes definitely lack the aloha spirit. Teri chix and steak should be marinated overnight, and not just cooked plain, then basted with a barely sweet shoyu sauce as its plated. Loose and sweet should describe a tinder hookup, but definitely not Mac salad. I gave final hope to an order of malasadas, but they tasted of fried store-bought biscuit dough (and were still raw in the center. Look, Im not saying its a bad place, but if youre hoping for a taste of the islands, this is not it. I wish them well, but I, unfortunately, will not be a returning customer.

First for the good stuff: decent beer selection, good service, nice place, and the North Shore Shrimp was really good. Now, for the rest: the food was ok. I had the Hulu girl plate lunch (chicken) and was disappointed to get chicken breast instead of thigh. Also the scoop of Mac salad was so little it was depressing. My wife had the Mahi Mahi and it was pretty bland. And all the food was overpriced. Ive lived in Hawaii for a few years and love it. My wife was born and raised in Hawaii. My wife and I would love a local place in Virginia to get some good Hawaiian food. Not sure the wife and will return... Maybe if they get rid of the chicken breast for the plate lunch.
