Been in 4 times first time was great last three timea were sub par. Last time I went in it was slow we had the bartender as our server. Although the restaurant itself appeared slow the bartender herself was very busy making drinks for the other tables. As a server and a bartender for many years I can relate and sympathize. Unfortunately for that reason it took a very very long time to receive any service at all. Eventually we ordered special martinis that w93rd very good. I ordered the special which happened to be a steak dish my date ordered the rissoto which is what I really wanted but the server convinced me other wise.. We ordered the flat bread for an appetizer it took a while but was exceptional. We waited a total of two hours to receive our main courses. When they got there the steak was cold along with the potatoes and everything on my plate. My dates rissoto was piping hot and delicious! Rissoto is an art and can sometimes take a long time to cook properly so I think my food sat in a window getting cold while the rissoto cooked to perfection. By this time it had been just over two hours I couldnt wait any longer I was so hungry. My girlfriend loves it and tries to get me to go but I cant, Ive givin roots too many chances and its let me down. I much prefer table 24.

Loved this place! My parents & I were visiting Rutland from out of town to see the "Whose Live Anyway" show at the Paramount Theatre (loved this, too!). I had researched a couple promising restaurants online where we could eat dinner before the show. Roots was closest to the theatre so we tried it out. I was blown away! Not only does the restaurant support local ag & food producers, but they also deliver in taste & especially, presentation. The interior is sleek & beautiful while maintaining a welcoming, cozy atmosphere. I loved the blow up images of fruit & vegetables on the walls. I had the Curried Tofu, my dad had the Duck, & my mom had the Eggplant Napolean... all awesome! with dinner i tried Roots exclusive Evening Song Ale (proceeds go to Hurricane Irene victim Evening Song Farm)... great smooth darkish ale. after the show, we came back for dessert... we sat outside this time because it was such a mild night. the chocolate mousse cake was ok but i thought the cake part was very dry. the ice cream was very creamy & delicious. the banana saute was outstanding. I cant wait to come back & try something else!

A friend and I were looking for a place to eat on a trip to Rutland and stumbled upon Roots. Five minutes before they closed, actually. But everyone there was lovely and said that they would serve us anyway. We loved the atmosphere, very homey but classy. The staff was wonderful. And - the food. My word! My friend got the dumplings and I got a quiche. She loved her dumplings (I tasted them and they were amazing) but the quiche was to die for. Im pretty sure they somehow managed to turn Buddha into a quiche. We were sitting there practically humming the food was so wonderful when we got asked if we wanted dessert. We asked the waitress her recommendation since we couldnt choose. She went with the cheesecake. While we were waiting we sat there describing what exactly the perfect cheesecake would taste like. The cheesecake we were served was the most perfect cheesecake ever. Our description exactly. And then some. Roots officially ruined most other restaurants for me but, man, was it worth it.

My wife and I decided to eat here for her birthday dinner. We had 7pm reservations and arrived at 650p. They told us our table would be ready shortly once the current diners left. Needless to say, we watched two other parties of two with 7pm reservations arrive over the next 40 minutes and be seated, while we were still waiting at the bar. Meanwhile we stared at empty tables for the entire 40 minutes... The beer prices were decent and the selection was decent, which was the saving grace of the night. I ordered an emu meatloaf special, but it arrived dry and cold. Maybe it had been waiting in the kitchen longer than we had been waiting for a table? The location was small and quaint and had nice decor. Overall, if you are looking for a place to go have a beer while you stare and hope for the table you reserved to be available, then this is your spot!

The chef there is not classically trained, but you would never know that from the food! Inspired menu choices. Beautiful presentation, exceptional quality and attention to detail. All food is cooked to absolute perfection! No soggy veggies here! Baked items are all fresh - crisp on the outside and delectable on the inside. Meats are cooked to order - seasoned perfectly - juicy and delicious. Veggies are all local (the fiddle-head fern sprouts are divine) and absolutely out of this world. Classic desserts are mouthwateringly elegant and prepared perfectly. The place is small, however,so make reservations early. Service is consistently wonderful. If you want absolutely GOURMET local sustainable food for very reasonable prices, this is your place.

I want to love this place I really do, But I havent had good experiences there! I much prefer table 24. My last two experiences were not good my food was cold my girlfriends was delicious though she had the risotto perhaps it took longer than expected for the risotto to cook while my food sat in the window. Edit: Today I went to Roots again. Got the shrimp risotto my friend got the lamb chop. Absolutely amazing. We sat at the bar our bartender was fast and informative!

I would drive 100 miles for a meal at Roots. Almost every dish was quite simply the best food we have had in a very long time, maybe ever. The mushroom sauce with the polenta appetizer was a standout, as was the mouthwatering salmon, and the scrumptious pork. I really can;t recommend this place more highly. Be sure you have a reservation!

The staff was lovely. We arrived without a reservation, and they made room for us anyway! GF food aplenty, amazing drink menu crafted from local spirits, and outstanding vegetarian options. We were hungry when we arrived and full when we departed. Thanks, Roots, for a wonderful dining experience. We will be back.

Great atmosphere and even better food. I love the local flare for the food and the concentration on keeping the food natural and not processed. Try the emu & pork sandwich. The calamari is exceptional. The great staff makes the whole package worth while. Thank you Erin for giving us a great dining experience.

Absolutely amazing, it is something that one would expect to find in Boston. Great place for a night out. It is farm to table and everything is cooked perfectly. We had the braised pork and the emu risotto, amazing. Just make sure to call ahead for reservations. It can get packed.
