With respect to the heated Weissman-Dady competition for biggest name in the San Antonio restaurant scene thats currently doing battle in my head, Italian is the cuisine with which both chefs have the biggest overlap. However, after visiting Il Sogno Osteria last week and Tre Trattoria this week, both restaurants take Italian food and go in different directions. It seems to me that Tre Trattoria focuses more on nouveau-Italian, starting with classical basics and updating them in new and interesting ways. Trattoria is certainly the less formal of the two located in the Boardwalk on Broadway*, I chose here to spend my lunch before my weekly pilgrimage to Central Market. Like my recent visit to Restaurant Insignia, I came during lunchtime and was disappointed to see that there were no more than two other parties eating during my meal. Nevertheless, the trendy interior design and upscale-but-not-fancy atmosphere established by the decor and the very friendly service of my waiter Nick ensured that I was going to enjoy my meal. I ordered the special of two Wagyu meatballs stuffed with homemade mozzarella served over a bed of spaghetti with a sweet red sauce. For some roughage, I chose a new menu item, portabella mushroom slices marinated in balsamic vinegar and finished with truffle oil. The meatballs were large, and like the best meatballs, were like mini-meatloafs, with some vegetation, spice, binder, and plenty of meat. There wasnt too much mozzarella, which I would have enjoyed considering its made in-house, but I would rather have more meat than cheese. The sauce was sweet but also spicy, invoking two tastes to create an enjoyable experience, and it was used with restraint, unlike many of the average Italian restaurants in which Ive dined. The spaghetti was house-made, too, and cooked pretty well, no al dente, but not overdone, either. It was altogether a far cry from the spaghetti and meatballs I used to eat out of a can as a child, and done in a manner that was reminiscent of Italian cooking, but in such a way so as to make it known that this was not traditional Italian. The portabella slices were similarly bold and savory, and if I could firmly get a grasp on the concept of umami, I would claim that these mushrooms were full of it. At $3.25 per side, I dont think a side order would share well with multiple people unless you got two or three of them and shared everything. The main course, too, was fulfilling but not in excess, and you could share with another person, but I dont know why youd want to. The restaurant features a good amount of pizzas and paninis, too, though thats not what Im looking for in an Italian joint (they do the pizzas well enough in Restaurant Insignia, anyway), but for classic Italian cooking seen through the eyes of a modern day chef, you cant go wrong with Tre Trattoria. *While the restaurant is located in the Boardwalk, it can be a little difficult to find, as I discovered as I walked through the deceptively complex series of storefronts that compose the Boardwalk. Trattoria is located on the southernmost end, connected to a separate parking lot that can be accessed by taking the first right immediately south of the sign for the restaurant, adjacent to the park.

January 12th 2016 Today is the 3rd time that me and my wife have been to this restaurant. The first time the food was great. We ordered the meat and cheese tray and the melted mozzarella as appetizers. My daughter ordered a pizza and my wife ordered the Black Ink squid pasta, and I ordered a 16 ounce ribeye steak. The appetizers were great. Really love the meat and cheese tray. It had different cheeses, it had prosciutto, some salami, and another deli meat. It also had some fig Mavalade that was actually really good. It had some pine nuts and some other stuff on there that was good. The steak that I got was burnt. At least the outside was. It was charred very heavily. The inside was perfect. I ordered it medium rare. But the the bitterness of the chardness its overwhelming and takes over the flavor of the meat. So all you taste is the burnt of it instead of the meat itself. Very disappointed. I have to cut off all the chard off my steak. The outside of it was like eating charcoal briquettes. If you can imagine doing that. I did not complain but the waiter noticed that I had cut all around my steak and told me that next time to order a light chardness or no chard. At the end a complimentary gave us two desserts which was very nice of the waiter. Today we went and I was looking forward to the meat and cheese tray and the melted mozzarella. I ordered the meat cheese tray and it was not like the first time. It had different stuff on there. The cheese were not even the same. Today they gave us some nasty ugly stuff. I think one of them was brie. Everything that they put on that meat n cheese tray was not good at all with the exception of the pancetta and prosciutto. Theres just no consistency at this restaurant. The pizza that my daughter ordered was also different. The first time it was really good period today it was spicy. And I told the waiter that it was for my nine-year-old daughter. He should have been smart enough to not make it spicy. Very disappointed. On top. The bill was $155. I think this place is overpriced for what your paying for. Ive had 50 and $60 steaks at Ruth Chris, little Ryans Steakhouse , Mortons. Ive had better $30 steaks then this place. Texas Roadhouse has a better ribeye then this place. Needless to say today will be the last time that we ever set foot in this place again. If youre looking for a good quality steak this is not the place for it. You can get a better tasting steak and pay a lot less somewhere else other than here. I dont recommend this place. dont waste your money.

Ive been to this location multiple times and it has never been my idea. Coming from a family who owns restaurants, I find it hard to believe that the service is consistently bad and and to top it off, rude. The last experience I had was when I attended a surprise birthday party there. People had been arriving for a while and the table was not ready. Although I had told the hostess that we didnt want to be seen by the birthday boy, she told me that the table didnt have menus on it so we needed to wait for a bit longer. So we waited, and waited until finally we asked if we could just go over to the table when we responded with the same excuse that the manager was putting menus on the table. I finally told her that menus do not matter, what matter is if the birthday guest shows up and sees us all just standing around at the front of the restaurant! So she rolled her eyes and walked off to talk to the manager (guessing she didnt think I saw that). After we were seated we were left without water or bread for about an hour, including when the birthday guy got there. We received the bare minimum attention at best even though no one else was in the restaurant. Its just as though every time I go there it gets worse. I remember when they first opened and I loved it. Now Im getting sick of the menu being tiny and not good enough for the crap service I receive.
