We must be the odd couple out. Lots of negative reviews here, many from folks who ordered their flesh "medium well". Therein lies the problem, medium well ruins the food idiots. Medium or less is where you should aim. Anybody with a half-civilized palate knows better than to order medium well; hell, just order beef jerky! Okay, so onto my review. Esposa and I had ridden our bikes by the Grey Moss Inn numerous (and I do mean numerous) times during our many rides along Scenic Loop Rd. It had always intrigued us, but for some stupid reason, wed never eaten here despite knowing of it since 2005. Perhaps it was those pesky whiny reviews on Yelp, Google, and other websites. We purchased a Groupon and took the plunge. Ambiance is VERY rustic, warm, intimate, romantic, and inviting. The greeting area features a huge tree trunk in the middle of the room! Tables are small are adorned with dripping candles. Menu is focused. Wine list features > 500 wines and has consistently been recognized by Wine Spectator magazine. You can select food and wine to fit a mid-range or high-range taste and budget. Hell, they have several cult wines you cant find anywhere else. Service was stellar. Our server was pleasant (despite being an Alabama Crimson Tide fanatic), professional, and knowledgeable about the food and wine list. He helped steer me toward the lamb chops and esposa to the lobster tail. My lamb chops were PERFECTLY cooked medium rare. Esposas lobster was stellar: succulent and perfect. Baked taters had a nice thick char on the bottom, just as I like. Server and I felt that a bottle hearty Chardonnay would be able to stretch between the two extreme protein choices, and it did. No dessert needed. After dinner, we sauntered outside and chatted with the man behind the meat at the mesquite fire. It was once a well but now brings pleasure to those who know how to order their meats properly cooked. Overall, we found this to be a very romantic evening. Were kicking ourselves in the butt for not having come earlier. Well certainly return for many years to come!

We had been talking about this place for months and finally went for my birthday last weekend. I was delighted in learning the history and looked forward to eating at such a supposed fine restaurant. Im quite the cook and was excited to taste something new that I didnt have to make. The olive twists were strange and should be taken off the menu. I ordered prime rib and although it was properly cooked, it was very fatty and tough. Texas Roadhouse has a much better steak and less than half the price. My asparagus was not seasoned at all and so overcooked it was like limp pasta. The $5.00 potato half was ok, but thats not saying much. I love squash, but I think they mixed it with tomato. I only could stomach one cube and it was bitter. My husband had the chopped steak and it was still cool in the center and had large spears of jalapeno in it (sloppy prep). I ordered oysters as an appetizer and had to send them back. They stunk, and obviously very old. The waitress was so embarrassed. We also had the sausage which I found mealy and pretty ordinary. The warm fruit compote was ok, but I wasnt impressed. The service was excellent and my glass of Pinot Noir from Concan was excellent as well. Im tempted to mail the chef my personal favorite recipes as I think they would be an incredible improvement and it breaks my heart to see a place that has such historical significance to our area go down the tubes like this. The decor was dusty, musty and the plants looked neglected. How the heck did they earn all of those awards???? What happened??? All in all, we felt very let down and will not be back. =( Im looking at the other reviews and some say great things and others are just like mine. Is the restaurant hiring people to give a good review? I have a very hard time believing that a place can differ that much from one diner to the next. I want my $100.00 back.

Last night the husband and I attended the Venacious Cellars Wine Tasting dinner. This was our first wine dinner ever attended at this location. We have had dinner here many times and the food is always stellar. So, at $65 a person, our expectations were high. The wine was terrific, the winemaker was informative and entertaining; truly kept your attention. Each course was mediocre at best. The shrimp appetizer skewers were chewy (no mistake they were previously frozen). The pork loin was beautiful, perfectly cooked (slightly pink in the center) tender, juicy, and had a balanced seasoning. The salmon had a charred slightly bitter skin with a "funny" texture (felt undercooked, but was light pink all the way through and a strange sliminess to it). The fried kale was not completely stripped of its fibrous veins. The rice was watery and not much flavor. The beef filet was rubbery and seemed old. Not aged, I have had aged beef, this was chewy and looked dry, like it had been sitting awhile. It did have some pink in the center...I believe it was cooked great, but the beef was old. The servers were very attentive and did a great job accommodating everyone. Found out the people we were seated next to own a high end franchise and made comments about how the food had a cafeteria quality too it. It was there first time eating at Grey Moss Inn. I explained the food is almost never this bad. Since they had friends who invited them, they were very gracious and didnt want to make a scene and asked me to not say anything. Overall, it was so disappointing and I just couldnt say nothing and let the owner think it was such a success.

My family decided to go to grey moss inn for my 30th birthday dinner, based off of obviously dated information that is was a fantastic fine dining restaurant. It was very far from fine dining. It was very over priced and the food was deplorable. The Escargot was the worst i have EVER had. The escargot did not have even a hint of garlic flavor and seemed to be sprinkled with mozzarella cheese that was so hard you couldnt scrape it off the escargot dish. It basically was flavorless snails floating in oil. The best part of the meal was a potato with cheese on it and the bread basket. Even the homemade dessert was so awful I couldnt finish it. The chocolate cheesecake was gummy and not light and fluffy at all. Our waitress although some what personable should not have been in a fine dining restaurant. She had to read the specials off of a list in her menu verbatim including the descriptive words that just made the specials sound awful, she should have had plenty of time before dinner service to become familiar with the nights specials. When our food was brought out about an hour after we had ordered, she proceeded to have a conversation with the table next to us for a prolonged period of time, before giving us our food, which was just sitting on a tray next to out table. When she finally did give us our food, when handing out each dish she proceeded to say "my darling" about 10 times in a 3 minute period. I would recommend spending your money elsewhere. This was by far the worst dining experience I have had in years. I am sad that this will be a memory of my 30th birthday.
