When I first moved to Flower Mound around a decade ago, the go-to place for brilliant authentic Italian was Baris. That was when it was in a strip mall, a couple of doors down from a Baskin-Robbins. The place was packed every night. The line was out the door for pizzas to go. The elder gentleman who owned the place sat in his booth, accepting visitors with a warm handshake, as his sons feverishly worked the counter. It was like something out of a Coppola or Capra movie. And the food was delicious, consistent, and joyful. Later, the little strip mall place was abandoned and a huge building erected down the street. Impressive to behold inside and out, and "Mama" seemed to take the helm of the operation. The bar and dining room are quite beautiful in this family oriented icon of Italian food. But along with the move, something happened to the food - and not in a good way. Hard to put your finger on it too. The food was acceptable, moderately priced, service good. But something about the flavors turned from "outstanding" to "Chef Boyardee" - more bland and generic than before. Who can explain this? It is still a family run business with the same staples as any Italian place. It is not bad - just not superior. The parking lot is always full of loyal family diners, but the food simply is not the same. Baris - what happened? I know I am not the only one who would now prefer to go across the street to Salernos. And I hope I dont get stuffed in a car trunk to be beaten in some alley for saying so. Mark Robbins

As a former worker, I can confirm that all of the reviews complaining of bad service are true. The waiters & owner(s) talked badly about all of the customers. They do not care one bit about you. I remember seating a party of eight and discovering that their little boy was turning 7. I wished him a wonderful birthday and upon informing the tables waitress, she said "I could care less, the mom is a B****". Additionally, the "authentic" food served here is bogus. The owners are Albanian, and chose to serve Italian food because it is easy to get right. Furthermore, this restaurant is VERY unsanitary. The menus are "supposed" to be cleaned once a day but I can personally guarantee you they wont be. And when cleaning tables after customers have left, I was told to just swipe all of the dirty food onto the floor. Lastly, the owners themselves are, in my opinion, bad people. They pay the people making your food "under the table", and make the waiters/ waitresses give some of their tips so that the owners dont have to pay their cooks as much. I personally was also payed under the table, which by the way, is illegal. So if youre looking for non authentic food made by non authentic people served on dirty tables by waiters/waitresses that practically despise you, then come on down to Baris pizza and pasta. This place doesnt deserve the minimum one star I had to give it.

We went to Baris in Flower Mound on Saturday night. The place was so dark, we could not see the menu. We asked the waiter to turn up the lights, which he did for about 3 seconds until the manager came and turned them down again. The waiter apologized saying the manager likes "atmosphere". Well, there was so much "atmosphere" that we could not see the menu, we could not tell the meatballs from the pasta, and we could not see the amount of the check". My wife had to go to the bar which was the only place there was enough light to sign the check, and she asked to see the manager. She told him she could understand that he liked atmosphere, but should have candles or something at the tables so people could see. At that he told her to leave, he did not need her business, and if she did not leave immediately he was calling the cops. All because she complained (and we overheard others complaining as well) that it was too dark? Well Mr, manager, I am sure you do not need our business, nor will you have it. With your idea of customer service, you will soon be by yourself one of these days, and you can bend over and kiss yourself where the sun does not shine, since you like the dark so much. Too, bad, because the food was good, but you are not the only Italian restaurant in town, and in this economy, who needs to put up with crap like that.

The only reason for a 3-star review is that the receipt we received in the restaurant did not reflect the charge that is placed on our card. We were actually charged 20% more than what the receipt indicated. This additional charge was NOT listed on the receipt, and it was NOT noted anywhere in the restaurant at all. It is an undisclosed charge. This has actually happened TWICE, so I know it is not a mistake. The only conclusion I can reach is that someone is taking tips without customer permission. I typically tip 20-25%, and the first time that I tipped, it was in cash; so I basically tipped 40%-45% simply because I was naive to the way this establishment does business. I would encourage this business to change its practices. I cannot imagine that charging customers in such a way truly contributes to repeat business. I fully understand what it is like to live on tips (and I do realize that there are bills to pay for the restaurant itself), but at least notify your customers. To accept a 50% tip out by taking advantage of a customers naivety is plain wrong.

Delicious & reasonably priced. 1st time customers Fri aft. Husband hates to try new places, but even he loved it. Signed up for Baris VIP E-mail Program. Got email coupon for comp appetizer good for only 5 days so went back on Sun. Showed coupon on iPhone. Waiter said must be printed to get comp appetizer. Complained. Mgr said she couldnt accept unless printed, which wasnt stated on coupon. Even waitress from Fri recognized us as returning new customers. We felt cheated & unappreciated. Went from likely weekly reg happy satisfied great-tipping customers, to don’t care if we ever go back. Totally forgot food was good. 5 star food and service 1st time. Mgmt gets 1 star 2nd visit.

Hostess (I think the manager) offered our menus to another table while seating us. Lighting was non uniform. Chess sticks Freshout of the freezer and did not taste good. No music but kitchen enjoyed their Mexican music. Food was boring tasteless. Since it took them a whole 5 minutes from order to table Im sure it was just sitting in the back. What I ordered hadnt improved since I was there 5 years ago. My recommendation to the manager is that they actually need to care about the business, the food, and the customers. The waitress was decent and polite. We will not go back ever.
