Before I begin, I want to say that I am never the type to write a bad review unless I feel it absolutely necessary. I always joke that the reason places have so many bad reviews versus good ones is because of course a ticked off customer is more likely to want to voice their experience than a happy one. However, I am the complete opposite. I love to give good reviews and feedback. I wish that were the case in this situation. Typically when people give bad reviews it is because of the service being bad or perhaps they just didn’t like the way something tasted. If I don’t like the way something tastes, it doesn’t really matter because someone else might love it, and since I was a server for 5 years I tend to be forgiving of bad service, because we are all human and everyone has a bad day from time to time. Of course there are exceptions to both of these things, but neither are worthy of a bad review unless maybe your waiter/waitress threw food at you. I feel this review is necessary because it is an issue regarding public health. I went into the Black Walnut Café located in Allen Texas. I ordered my lunch and dined in to eat it. Afterwards I decided to order a couple of desserts to go, one for myself, a piece of Chocolate Pie, and one for my boyfriend, a Canolli. I had only eaten here once before, and because of where the desserts are located I wasn’t sure if you place your order for them at the front register or the bar (where the dessert display is) so I asked the girl at the front register. She said I could order them either there or with the bar. When I went to the bar to order, the staff member seemed slightly annoyed that I was ordering with her, but I paid it no mind. She boxed up my goodies and I was on my way. The pie in the display had not been cut yet, so once I got into my car I opened the box to take a look at my yummy dessert. What I saw was a mangled piece of pie, literally mutilated. I was a little upset, but didn’t mind, because pie is pie in my book and it taste great no matter what it looks like. Unfortunately, that wasn’t all. Upon closer inspection, which wasn’t really close inspection at all because it was quite obvious, I noticed that it also had a nice spot of mold on it. At this point I was quite angry. I took my pie back inside and spoke with a manager. He handled the situation by saying it was completely unacceptable and gave me a full refund, including my Canolli, which I kept and later threw away because I was afraid it was contaminated as well. I’m grateful that the situation was dealt with, however, what really annoyed me was the fact that the bar tender was completely content with not only serving me a piece of pie that looked as if it had been thrown into the box from 15 feet away, but she also served me a piece of pie with a very visible spot of mold on it. I know she was content with this because while I was talking with the manager I looked at her to see what kind of reaction she would have and she simply made a less than pleasant face and shrugged as if she could care less. Needless to say, I will not be returning to Black Walnut Café. This is unfortunate, because the two times I have ordered lunch from there it has been quite delicious, but I am concerned about the quality and cleanliness of the food I am consuming after my experience today. In the restaurants I worked at one of the things the managers were most particular about were date and time stickers on EVERYTHING. This not only ensured that the food was fresh good quality food, but it was also a requirement if a health inspector were to stop by. I would say this is one area where Black Walnut could step up their game.

Wife and I went for Our 31st Anniversary. Both had salmon dishes. 2 Salmon entrées 1 Glass of Wine ($12.50) for my wife, tab was $50. We stood in line at the counter to order like at McDonalds. They gave us a notification that buzzes like lots of restaurants. Went and found our own seating. The buzzer goes of, go to counter, they hand us our plates , no tray, Silver ware was to the side like Wendys. Napkins were cheap MultiFold paper towels like in a roadside rest stop, but cheap ones. (Im in the janitorial business). You have to get your own drinks at self serve the soda fountain. My wife had to go to the bar to get her glass of wine. At least they had real silver ware. The FOOD was good, however. The problem, The Black Walnut is charging "Fine Dining Prices" but you get Dairy Queen service. Whataburger even brings your food to your table when dinning in. Not the Black Walnut. The manager, to his credit, when he asked how the food was, I commented on how nice the MF paper towels were, he brought us a complementary dessert, which was good.I didnt ask for the dessert.

My family has been wanting to try the Black Walnut Cafe for quite some time and our visit did not disappoint. You walk-in and there is a table where you can look at menus before walking up to the counter to order. If crowded it is probably easier to look at the menu and decide what you want before. They then give you a buzzer and you can find a seat. The food was beyond my expectations. I ordered the Turkey Burger and was thoroughly impressed by how well seasoned and flavorful it was. We also ordered the Blackened Salmon Caesar Salad, the Black Walnut Salad, a bowl of Tomato Basil soup, and the Grilled Chicken Breast with a cup of tortilla soup. Both salads were delicious and the soups were very tasty. The grilled chicken was a little dry and the roasted veggies that came with it seemed like a bit of an after thought, but overall the other components made the meal. I do believe it is a little pricy for a place where you order at a counter and then go pick up your own food, but the quality of the food was amazing. I will definitely be back!

I dont go around writing reviews, but my best friend and I enjoyed our lunch experience so much so that I wanted to come home today to go to the trouble! First the service was the best! Everyone was kind, and ready to please! He ordered Lobster tacos with a caesar salad and it was FABULOUS! The lobster was real and not imitation and the sauce was so creamy. Then, my Southwest Chicken Salad with Cilantro dressing that was to die for! It had mangoes, red and yellow peppers, with black beans, corn, tomatoes, wonderful mix of salad greens, with that spicy dressing that had heat and strong flavor of cilantro and lime. On top you had grilled chicken and a mix of toasted corn tortillas. On the side you were given wonderful garlic bread. The whole place had a wonderful atmosphere; a bar, a patio, a bakery, booths, wonderful selection of teas. We will be back! This is added to the list of one of our favorites. I look forward to trying other things on their wide selection of the menu.
