Updated Review: Ive moved my 2 star rating to 1 star and will never patronize this restaurant--or any Au Bon Pain--again. My first experience, labeled below, stands. Im now summarizing a second poor experience. Experience 2, July 2017: I bought a "Bon to Go" meal to eat for breakfast during an all-day Saturday class. I arrived to class to find (1) that the avocado in the meal was rock hard it was so green and (2) that the entire meal was expired. Serving a green avocado shows an utter lack of care (it was completely unfit to eat), and selling an expired meal demonstrates negligence and poor management. I wrote to ABP corporate that Saturday and received an automatic reply that someone would contact me Monday morning. On Wednesday of that next week, having heard nothing, I sent a follow-up email, which triggered a voice mail from the GM and an email from the RVP, with the GM copied, apologizing for my experience and offering a vague invitation back to their restaurant. I replied to both gentlemen explaining my specific concerns, and 8 days later, nobody has acknowledged this correspondence, nor has the company done anything to rectify that they sold me poor quality food. Experience 1, early summer 2017: No coffee. None. Super nice people work here, but nobody is making sure theres coffee. Not even decaf and hazelnut are available, let alone coffee that most people want to drink. Ive watched several patrons enter and leave because there was no coffee available...at a restaurant that calls itself a cafe.

The food is good, but really high in calories (like around 900 for a sandwich), and really expensive. The salad bar is grossly overpriced. You should not have to pay for the weight of salad dressing!! Dont you know that many of the people coming here are medical/graduate students (eg not wealthy, and typically health conscious), or families of hospitalized patients (eg financially strapped)?? My biggest problem is that probably 40% of the time I come here, my order gets messed up. I order the same thing every time: ham, egg white, cheddar, on ciabatta. Ive had the following variations: no ham, egg instead of egg white, no cheese, the wrong cheese, the wrong bread. Come on! Its not that complicated of an order, you just clearly werent listening to me when you wrote it down. Also, there is a discrepancy in the system for how that sandwich should be charged. Typically, its about $4. However, if the cashier is new and the sandwich order taker wrote it down a certain way, I get charged $6.50. I always stop them and have them change it -- how do I know how to charge my order better than the cashier? That is just absurd. Biggest positive: the staff are in general very friendly, and the soup guy is so passionate about his soup. Hes wonderful. Also, some of the cashiers that have been there a while are really friendly and like to get customers to smile before leaving.

The service is abysmal, especially given the price. The employees are consistent rude, unhelpful, and unprofessional. Employees are frequently cutting up amongst themselves instead of taking orders. The store is poorly stoked and routinely out of many items. I once was trying to get iced coffee, only to realize there was no ice. An employee saw me try to get ice from the machine, and then went back to the back, filled her own cup up with ice for her drink, and proceeded to come out and fill her drink, did not acknowledge that I was trying to get ice or offer to assist. Frequently when I visit the store in the morning shortly after opening, there is nothing ready. It is as if opening time is the time they get to work, not the time they are prepared to open business are serve customers. Furthermore, they also routinely close earlier than their stated hours. I would give anything to just visit a place that is prepared to serve me, with a staff who would at least be kind, courteous, and polite. I dont know why it is so hard to just be nice and act like you enjoy your job and want to take care of the customer.

This has to be the most mismanaged, disorganized, unclean, unprepared restaurant I have ever stepped foot in. This just isnt a 1 time occurrence or 2 times. This is an everyday issue with them not being ready when they open their doors. If they cant seem to get it together at a 5 am opening maybe they need to push their opening time back an hour or two. If the issue is with employees not caring to come in, showing up late then its time to clean the slate, and start over. I would give everyone 1 chance to correct their problems with doing the job they receive a paycheck for all while doing active interviews so when/if they mess up again they are terminated. Obviously they have no type of policy to follow dealing with call outs or tardiness. They should always have at least 4-5 on call employees/part time employees that will welcome the extra money should they receive the call.

Granted, I dont buy much from Au Bon Pain but I am charged a different amount for what I do buy practically every time I go in. Im done with them. Today, after waiting in line 5 minutes, I was told they took all forms of payment EXCEPT CASH! So I had to move to the back of another long line. A big sign may have helped here dont you think. All I was purchasing was a couple of tablespoons of humus and some bread. Instead of the 1.08 I was charged the last time I was in there, I was charged over 2.00. When I questioned the price, I was told that the humus was too light for her to scan so she charged me for a banana because she had to charge me for something. ( I did not have a banana). That has to be one of the dumbest...Ill stop. How about finer scales and automation. Robots would at least use logic and reason to come up with a better solution.

some notes for future management: The milk and creamer canisters for the coffee do not get washed everyday. You look at the spout that the milk pours from, theres always a thick film of spoiled product. The fruit is not inspected and probably not washed before packaged as Ive encountered rotten grapes and moldy strawberries more than once. im prompted to write this review after trying to use their restroom at 9am only to find there were no paper products (TP) and the room was very dirty. so obviously theres no one enforcing standard closing cleaning of the restaurant. The employee turnover in this place is also insane. Clearly the workers do not get paid enough to care about their jobs.

Received a 62 on recent health inspection. Absolutely should be closed down until completely sanitized and all filth eradicated. As a customer, you see the filth that is rampant in front of house -- trust me, you dont WANT to see the filth in back of house including dangerous food storage temperature issues. Considering its located in a HOSPITAL and patrons are almost exclusively health workers, patients and visitors to patients, I would think the sanitation and expired food issue would be priority ONE. The rude service, unprofessional treatment of customers, lack of stocked product, preparation, opening and closing at posted times? Some things never change.

I went there for breakfast and the girl who took my order was very unfriendly and moved like she had no energy left in her body. She got my order wrong, went back to let her know and she stated thats what I said I wanted and I told her no it wasnt, I know exactly what I ordered. No apology, no thank you , no customer service, made me feel very uncomfortable. The male preparing the food was very professional and friendly and so was the cashier.
