"Mediocre" menu? For the individual that wrote that, as well as anyone reading it, know this. The Glass Onion serves -organic- food. Organic honey, organic eggs, organic goat milk (cheesecake, etc.), organic chicken (as in no growth hormones, etc.), organic tomatoes (not the ones spliced with genes from fish, YES, fish in your GMO tomatoes from the grocery store), organic potatoes (not the GMO ones from Monsanto that are spliced with HUMAN genes, nice right? cannibalism much?), I really could go on, but, I would hope, you get the point. There is no placebo effect on organic food, the quality difference in taste and most certainly peace of mind IS there. Unfortunately, there is not "big money" in organic, most consumers would rather have their Monsanto GMO gene spliced foods. As a result of this, farmers are not given reason or encouragement to offer organic produce, heirloom organic vegetables, etc. Its a crying shame, but, "it is what it is." So the quantities are limited and because everything comes from local farms (besides the Coke, which, oh is the SUGAR based Coke, NOT the high fructose causing diabetes corn syrup based junk), their menu reflects availability. Just as youd go to any acclaimed seafood restaurant, where the price depends on the market, you should expect a similar effect at The Glass Onion as well.
I could go into fine detail of each food that Ive had here thus far, though that would become a short novel piece. Instead, I have had and fully approve of the following: Honey covered pound cake (thingies), Deviled eggs, Pecan encrusted pork chops, Fried Chicken, Goat Cheesecake (honestly, just give me the recipe and the goat please!), mashed potatoes, okra, etc.. The Glass Onion should be considered a delicacy and as such, expect the wait, expect the quality, expect the price (roughly $25 per person for full course, maybe $30 depending on what you get), etc. Since moving here a year ago, weve been able to get over there from Summerville three times. More visits are most definitely in store before we transfer next year, though I know it wont be nearly as many as we would like to make. My children LOVE the Mac N Cheese, even claiming its better than Daddys... That remains to be seen

We ate here for a Saturday brunch. I hate the fried green tomato po boy with pimento cheese and my wife had the french toast. Both were pretty good. The bottom line is I would come back here, but didnt find it flawless. Service I felt was very good. Wait staff was constantly coming by and checking on us, refilling drinks, and ensuring we had everything that we needed. Quality of the food was good, but I didnt feel it was flawless. The pimento cheese wasnt really to my liking. For sure it was made in house and simply put it was too spice heavy for my like. We were told that ahead of time, so I dont hold that against them, just I wouldnt order it again. I did order a basket of fries to share as a side and the fries were excellent. The fried green tomatoes were good as well. The french toast my wife had were good. When she got to the sausage that was on the side neither of us cared for it. Really heavy sage taste or something along that line. Then for a bonus note I felt the coffee was above average. All in all pretty good. One thing I felt was a downside is there is a bit of a wait for food. The wait staff were very good at what they were doing and were not slow at all. Your order just takes some time to make it to you and we got there before a rush. Just factor that in. I would happily go back and would recommend to folks to try out.

We found the Glass Onion by searching for a restaurant near our hotel. Weve been coming to Charleston for decades and had never tried this restaurant. We expected good food but were surprised by truly excellent food. We started with the smoked Jack appetizer and the watermelon feta salad. These were accompanied by two excellent drinks, the Blenheim Julep and barrel-aged Manhattan. Its clear the kitchen understands flavor, subtle heat and a combination of foods that go marvelously together. Our entrees with scallops on a risotto-like Hoppin John with butter beans and shrimp and grits. The scallops were perfectly seared and tender throughout, and the Hoppin John was topped with strips of delicately pickled peppers. The combination of creamy and piquant was wonderful. The shrimp and grits was carried in a deeply tomato gravy with grits that were both creamy and still had the right amount of bite. We really couldnt ask for better and will return everytime we are in Charleston.

We have been to The Glass Onion twice. Once, just my fiancée and I where we both fell in love with the Shrimp and Grits. The second time, we came with his mother and his daughter. He made me call in advance to make sure the Shrimp and Grits were being made (since we are from Hilton Head Island and were on a quick trip to N. Charleston). Both times the staff was amazing but the second time his mother had an incident, and the staff was so kindn and so helpful to our family throughout the whole meal! To top that off, our elderly mom also left her phone there in the bathroom, so I called a few days later and spoke to the manager, who had heard about our incident and was also very kind, in fact so much so, she mailed our mothers phone that day! Needless to say, I am still very impressed with how wonderful they all were and of course the food!!!! We will be returning for more Shrimp and Grits! And thanks again to the staff and manager at The Glass Onion! ✌️

My daughter and I traveled to Charleston and were looking for some good Southern food..She found the Glass onion through the internet and decided to check it out...We reserved our Tuesday nite Fried Chicken dinners, she had the dark and i got the white meat...let me tell you the chicken was delicious. we really enjoyed it. There mashed potatoes were delicious...oh yeah and we had the squash salad with toasted almonds and mint was delicious also...We enjoyed our dinner so much that we decided to go the next day for lunch...i had the meatloaf and she had the pork chop...the meat loaf was yummmm, a little spicy but it was to my liking .....my daughter loved her pork chop also...between the two days we tried some sides: mashed potatoes, summer succotash, and collard greens....all were good also..the staff here is very friendly and accomodating...so if you are heading to Charleston you have to check this place out.....5 out of 5 stars i give it

People talk about this place like its so good. They have a good mimosa selection. I had some type of specialty (one time only) appetizer that was really good (a shrimp roll?) but my food was awful! I got an omelet and asked if they could cook the eggs all the way so they werent runny. Well the eggs came out some weird texture like they had been poured out of a carton of instant eggs and microwaved until they were overdone. The contents inside were obviously not cooked in the egg. The waiter only came by once after I got my food and didnt listen to me when I tried to get his attention to tell him the food sucked. Needless to say, I tipped poorly (I rarely ever do) and wont be back! Also, I had a peach cobbler that was so mediocre I didnt want to finish it.
