Youre going to have to accept this place on its own terms. Established since 1930, if you have a problem with it, youll be the one eating somewhere else. Its clearly not going anywhere. Food is tasty albeit smallish burgers with a very sweet mustardy relish that is a dominant flavour. The "chile" is also featured, having a nice mix of beans and onions, you are instructed to eat it with the oyster crackers and mustard, "and then youve got something " Sit at the counter and time has frozen. They use the same recipes, preparation - even cookware from a bygone era. You literally are looking at a snapshot of history when you step into this place. TINY, and an older school cannot be found. Open 24/7, the countertop men are very accommodating and protective of this venerable establishment. (Apparently, the owner used to stock this place - many years ago - with men fresh from the local jail because he believed strongly in giving these guys another chance.) Wow. Texas Tavern. An eatery that had not changed in any significant way in the last 84 years, (save the prices.) Even the tops of the foot rail under the counter stools has totally worn out over the years, cleanly showing the interior of a metal pipe installed during the Hoover administration. Enjoy it while you can.

Dont expect anything from this local watering hole/simple good food place. Texas Tavern of Roanoke, Virginia is its own unique place. It makes not attempt nor any apologies for not having even the remotest connection to that purportedly big southwestern place bordering Mexico and its Gulf that is its namesake. Its a southwestern Virginia creation we call our own. Being as old world as America can get here in Virginia, with far off places like Texas as almost "foreign", Roanokes Texas Tavern is a play on that relativistic regionalism while giving its guests its own palate-pleasing fare. If you come here expecting to be reminded of something from Texas, youll be disappointed. But if you come for pleasing company, a cold beer and good eating then youre at the right spot--24/7.

I was born and raised in Roanoke Virginia I remember coming to this place as a little kid going to the parade downtown and stopping in and having a chili dog or a bowl of chili. Its very famous for its cheesy western WITCH is (FRYED EGG,CHEESE,HAMBURGER,RELISH,ONION,ON A HAMBURGER BUN.. we typically get them without relish and onions and the chili is the best around.. THE OLD SAYING IS "THEY WILL SEAT 1000 PEOPLE 10 AT A TIME " most definitely would recommend anyone by the Star City to stop by and have a bowl with.... but dont stay too long you know what the old saying is you go to Virginia on vacation and you will leave on probation and will shortly be back for a violation... lol...

I have been three times total with drastically different experiences. The first two times were really late at night, and overall the experience was great. The employees working were nice, food was prompt, and I enjoyed it. The last time, unfortunately, two of the three employees were blatantly rude. One guy gave us one straw, and when I asked if I could get another straw he practically threw a small handful of straws at us. The other, the cook, didnt make any eye contact at all when asking what we wanted. However, despite the last experience, I will probably go back. The price isnt too bad, and is a good place to go late at night. I will avoid it at all costs during the day though.

I have been wanting to try this place for a while, ever since reading about it on a list of best chilis in Virginia. I had the opportunity to travel from Richmond and stopped in to try it. The atmosphere is unique and worth visiting for. Beyond that, it gets interesting. Very limited toppings available for burgers (no lettuce or tomato?). The burger did taste good and was actually two very small patties side by side. This was the large cheeseburger. The chili was not chili. More like a soupy baked beans. No flavor, very thin, no spice at all. Fries are not available. Overall, a disappointment. Worth it to visit once, but not a place to return to for a meal.

Waited over 45 mins for chili with. Said they was really busy with the cruise night in town that night which they was not busy when I got there at 930pm on a Friday night....was only 4 stools used. I would had never ordered if I knew it was going to take that long...would have gone elsewhere. Would not refund my money after I waited 30 mins in and was no manager on duty...said they dont have a manager at night. Said manager would call me in morning. Week later no call....have also called left message 3 different occasions said he was either busy or not there and would call me back....never has

Havent eaten at the Texas Tavern since the spring of 1966, but hope to visit during the weekend of February 14 - 15, 2015. Can hardly wait! Food was always great, and the prices --quart of the best homemade chili for a $1.00 and hot dogs for $0.15 each were worth every penny! Even though the Tavern only sits a 100 people, 10 at a time, it was always worth a short wait - day or night. If the Texas Tavern isnt as good today as it was 59 years ago, Ill re-rate this outstanding Roanoke eatery after my visit next weekend.

Between the flavor and the prices, I wish I could give this place even more stars! Quainy diner for room for about 10 - 15 maybe but it has that old school feel to it. I got a chili dog and one with relish and I usually hate relish, but its not the pickle kind and man it was good. The chili was the best hot dog chili Ive had in my life and ended up getting another dog with chili even though I was full. That and a diet Coke came out to under 7$, this place is a must visit!

I love TTs. My husband and I have been eating here together since we were dating over ten years ago, and hes been eating here since he was a child. Our absolute favorite menu item is the Double Cheesy Western: A double Cheeseburger with a fried Egg, Pickles, Relish, and "that" mustard. We think of the guys there as friends and eat there about once a month. Talk the guys up, theyre always good for a laugh.

Texas Tavern has been my go to fast food joint since my first visit with my dad as a kid. The atmosphere is what you would expect from a small downtown short order restaurant - quick service, local lingo, and no BS. Its cash only, but there is an ATM inside. Order a bowl with and a cheesy with. You will find out why so many people recommend the Tavern. Its a one-of-a-kind gem.

Food tastes good, great hours, however, saw the cook slapping burgers on the grill peeling off the wax paper then reaching in to the bag of buns without changing gloves or washing hands. Doesnt really bother me, just FYI for those with a weak stomach or the owner if he/she cares. Im sure this is the age old process or novelty of eating at a restaurant of such tenure. Lol

Its been a while since my husband and I are at The Tavern because we moved to NC. We were visiting friends and family in Roanoke and had to stop by. The place is just as we remember it and the dogs and chili are still great. A bowl with and a cheesy western. We will stop by again probably around Thanksgiving and Christmas. Best regards to all.
