This restaurant is an absolute must for any new visitors to Charleston. My boyfriend and I came here on a daycation and were lucky enough to dine on the patio here with our server Cameron. Not only was he incredibly knowledgeable about the food and accommodating to our request for a six course service, he took the time to personalize our experience and fuel the passion we have for the food and beverage the industry. As a front of the house manager in a fine dining restaurant, and my boyfriend a chef, we can both see either sides to the service and have absolutely no complaints. Cameron informed us of the desserts that he actually had a part in the making of (the poached pear dessert, which is absolutely incredible) and thoroughly explained the process of coming up with and making the dishes before and after sharing them with us. Not only did he break down the dishes for us, he paired our desserts and second courses with drinks that made our experience that much better. It is staff like Cameron that really show the beauty that the chefs put on the plates and the service that makes the experience that much more enjoyable. Props to Cameron and the chefs behind this beautiful establishment.

This restaurant feels like it comes directly out of a Sherlock Holmes novel, with its dimly-lit ambiance and wooden accents. We ate brunch, here, and it was delicious; I had the Charleston Eggs, which have lump crab under two poached eggs, all set on top of English muffins and topped with Bearnaise--and a side of fries and asparagus. Although the name is French, this place does not follow European portion control; I was dropping fries off my plate constantly, trying to cut the English muffins, and several of my fries were left, at the end of the meal. But, it was all delicious. A few technical cooking issues (the eggs were between hard and soft-poached, one spear of asparagus was on the raw side, while the other two were slightly mushy and overcooked), but this restaurant was easily accessed from street parking on Warren Street, and the fries were crispy and perfectly seasoned. The crab meat, being from Charleston, was, of course, delicious, and the service was EXCELLENT--our server was kind, upbeat, and knowledgeable on the menu. Generally, I would recommend visiting 39 Rue de Jean...they do a great job taking care of you.

My parents came in town for an impromptu visit last Sunday night- My boyfriend and I planned to take them to Coast- but they are renovating- so we debated Indian or French and luckily choose Rue De Jean. We all had such a nice evening there! Our servers name was Holly and she was absolutely incredible! She was very friendly and made us feel welcome and at-home. Above all, she did not make us feel rushed or like she was "trying to "turn a table for profit" (like she was trying to get us out of there to get another group of people in) and just let us take our time- this was very nice and so important being that we only had a couple hours to spend with them. We ate there for 3 hours and what an incredible meal we had. goat cheese salad, duck salad, beef tartare (with a beautiful little quail egg on top), the most lovely cheese plate, and I Can Not Begin To Describe Just How Good The Mussels are!!! We all had them and loved them and the french bread that went with them! We Love Rue De Jean and will be back! Go there- you will not regret it! It is also a perfect place to sit in the spring and fall on the side patio and eat and eat!

Again, was looking forward to some french cooking while attending a conference in Charleston. Checked out this restaurant and made a reservation after reading the reviews. First impression was off putting as when shown to the table I was sticking to the floor the whole way. Not sure what that was about but the why it was sticky kinda stays in your mind the whole time youre there. Appetizers were very promising. French onion soup was some of the best Ive ever had. Escargot was very good also. But then the entrée came and things went drastically downhill. Ordered Steak Au Poviour w/frites and a side of roasted Brussel sprouts. Asked for "medium" (hot pink center), got well done. Frites were average at best. Hollendaise sauce was tasteless. Brussel sprouts were under cooked, which I know some folks like, but if I wanted uncooked vegatables I wouldve just gone to the produce market. Overall a horrible, way over priced experience. This was not by any measure authentic french cooking and Ive experienced good french cooking before in San Francisco. I suppose I shouldve tempered my expectations...

Food was very good, as expected. Calmari was truly lightly breaded and wonderfully seasoned. Tuna was cooked just right though risotto was perhaps a bit undercooked; steak perfect. Waded through Embassys famous free drink crowd to the restaurant. It is cavernous and cold; high ceilings, fans rotating, small tables which can barely accommodate the entree plates, but amazingly not too close to one another, uncomfortable ( for me) unpadded chairs. The servers, perhaps thinking they are providing good service, remove plates before others are finished ( poor training or looking for turning tables?) and worst of all, so noisy, with hard surfaces all over, it was not possible to have a normal conversation. It looks like Rue 39 was at the mercy of Embassys architects and had to go along. Would like to go back to sample the various mussel presentations and other menu items but it seems unlikely basic environmental problems can be solved. CAUTION Embassy obviously wants to discourage valet parking: $20 A parking garage is available right around the corner.

Wow! The declining reviews are warranted! Will no longer return as a local or bring visitors! The service is atrocious in relation to the food prices (and quality of food). Just changed to 2 because the food is excellent, but the menu is too much! Literally, there is so much on the menu that it is fine print! Cant read it in the dimly lit atmosphere and good luck for any service to help out! Not that I have been to an Olive Garden, but I bet they have it more together inregards to their service. If I am correct, this is the same owner of Coast. We ha e always wanted to go, but price to service via word of mouth has been iffy. Now with what we experienced again, with poor service. Will not reward this establishment for poor service. You are not the only location closest to the Music Hall, so I am tired of being made to feel "take it or leave it". I brought as guest, and they were more blown away then me! Very disappointing. Dont bother, go elsewhere for establishments that actually give a rip about their clientele and their servers training!

Love the food, but it loses points because the staff has acted like total snobs last two times we were here. I visit the area at least twice a year. My husband had never been and I talked about how excellent it is so we made it a point to go. The first time we tried to visit was back in April of 2016. We walked in and immediately the hostess said sorry we dont have anything available. Before we even asked! I asked her if this was all day and night and she said it would be "hours" before a table came open. Not only was I bummed, but I felt embarrassed, like we were just not welcome. We finally were able to eat here for my birthday back in January. And while the food is really good, the staff again have their noses turned up. Our waiter never made eye contact with us. I just feel like its all an act. I was born in Charleston and grew up spending all my free time in downtown. Its not a good representation of the holy city. But the food is so good so they have that.
