I live in Charleston and recently tried Chez Nous for the first time with my wife and her parents last Saturday for an 8 pm reservation. I had heard good things, but was extremely disappointed with our experience. First off, we reserved a table for 4 in the courtyard for the ambiance, but were seated at a community table, with the party next to us listening in on our conversation. There goes the ambiance. The menu is very small (2 appetizers, 2 entrees, 2 deserts). My father-in-law and I each ordered the same appetizer (octopus salad) and he same entree (swordfish). About 10 minutes after ordering, we were told they were out of the octopus salad. We could either order the other option or a new option (a canned tuna salad). Of course the canned tuna salad doesnt sound appetizing at all, so I opted for the ricotta salad with snap peas, the only other choice. It lacked flavor and was really just a plate of snapped peas on top of a heap of ricotta. Time for the entrees. The wait staff brought out the entrees and we began to dig in. A few minutes into eating my fish, we overhear the waitress tell the couple next to us, at the community table, that they are now out of the swordfish. The replacement is grouper. We hear that and it dons on me that Im not eating the swordfish I ordered, its the grouper. They ran out of the fish we ordered and served us the replacement without alerting us or asking if wed like to choose something different. My father-in-law doesnt like grouper so I decided to say something to the waitress. She was apologetic, but confused. She didnt know they had swapped out the fish. The manager then came over and barely apologized. Instead, he looked at our plates and saw we had starting eating the fish and sarcastically said, "well, it looks like you didnt have a problem with the grouper." The exchange was awkward to say the least as the entire courtyard looked and listed in. Needless to say, in a city rich with great restaurants, we wont be returning to Chez Nous. There are plenty of better options with more menu choices and less arrogant management. Id give the restaurant a 1-star review, but the wine was delicious.

Chez Nous, which opened on 3/18/14, brings a unique European restaurant concept to Charleston, from the Panellas (the couple who owns local-favorite wine bar, Bin 152, and their chefs (Jill Mathias, Executive Chef and Juan Cassalett, Sous Chef). Accepting no reservations, Chez Nous offers a different menu each day (closed Mondays) for lunch and dinner (yes, the menu changes daily, how ambitious is that?) with two appetizers, two main courses, and two desserts, along with a diverse wine list. Its a cozy and romantic two-story place: lots of dark wood, candlelight, and French music. My wife and I were lucky enough to get the chance to try Chez Nous on one of their "soft opening" nights, which ran smoothly--to my surprise given how many moving parts go into opening a restaurant. The appetizers were octopus or pork belly; the main courses were house-made chicken/veal sausage or Catalan fish stew; and the desserts were fig pudding or an orange tart. All creative, well-executed and delicious. Friendly and efficient service rounded out the experience. Personally, I thought somebody would have to be a little nuts to open a new restaurant with the white-hot Charleston fine-dining scene competition, but it seems the owners and chefs have successfully carved out a delicious niche for themselves! Cant wait to go back.

Its too bad that you can have all the elements of a good restaurant without delivering on the most important one ...the food. My group called ahead and were told, in amazing detail, what to expect on the menu. After drinks our waitress informed us those dishes we heard about were not available, but the chefs were great at improvising on what was left in the kitchen. That turned out to be false. My chicken was dry and only tasted of salt. The pasta was bland. It was like a French Applebees. I have to wonder if this husband and wife team in the kitchen are doing ok personally because the food tasted....sad.

They ran out of literally half the menu by the time my party arrived. And the chef was "IMPROVISING" I.e. Grabbing whatever was left in the kitchen. The "Apple salad" was lettuce and apple diced cheese. Revolutionary. No swordfish? Oh lets just replace with.... Overlooked Chicken. Weak. Oh and they charge you full price for these replacements. Im sure this place is good but if you hear that they are out of stuff, and the chef is improvising or whatever bullsh*t they try to feed you go somewhere else.

My wife and I have been here many times and have had excellent dining experiences each time. The staff is very engaging, knowledgeable about the menu and attentive. We have introduced Chez Nous to many of our out of town friends who have all highly praised it. Chef Jill Mathais and her husband, Juan, are fabulous in the kitchen and present their expertly prepared French, Italian and Spanish dishes to each patron in a straightforward and unpretentious manner. Highly, highly recommended.

This is our favorite restaurant in all of Charleston! My husband and I regularly go here to celebrate our anniversary or birthdays. I love the always changing menu, the small home atmosphere, the superb wine list, and the wonderful attention provided by the staff. As there are only two appetizers, entrees, and desserts offered each day we always just order the whole menu, and we have never been disappointed. Definitely a place to go if you have not been!!!

Visited in 2015 Order the menu with your date. The Bordeaux and Cabernet are awesome. The only time I had a negative thought about the place was because our waiter kept making rookie mistakes. However, everyone is entitled to learning a trade and he was new. Therefore, I cannot deduct any points from my score. 5/5 stars. If I ever return to Charleston, this will be my second stop after checking in at Zero George.

As the previous review mentioned there was only two entries on the menu, a fish dish and and strip steak. Very large portions. Menu is different every day. Food is outstanding, like you are in the south of France. Very good old world wine list at affordable prices. This is NOT a tourist restaurant. Filled with locals and reservations should be made. Not easy to find so use your Google map.

Excellent. The wine was delightful and well represented. The food was perfectly done and seasonally correct. The staff could not have been better; attentive but not intrusive. There were just the two of us so we decided to share everything. There were two appetizers, two entres and two desserts. We essentially ate every thing on the menu handing plates back and forth Well be back.

This place is a hidden Gem. I am speechless! The Menu was handwritten (hard to read but they explained everything) and fresh daily. So what I had, you will never have! but from the ambience to the food... you have to go here. If you are wondering if youre in the right area when youre trying to find it...you are. Its literary in between homes and its such a cool location.

Never actually got to eat there. My review is based on the fact that the owners left town, never changed their voice mail message to say that the restaurant would be closed for an extensive time. They also did not leave any notifications on the web site. I want the only one who went out to eat there, there was another couple at the same time, disappointed....
