Im only giving it 2 stars because 1 star means I hated it and hate is such a strong word. I went in with my nephew expecting it to be a sweet and friendly place with awesome breakfast food, my hopes based on all the wonderful reviews I read online. But I was really disappointed to find a cramped and uncared for little diner with too many "unique" items on the menu and not so friendly staff. We walked in and the waitress simply looked at us and kept walking. We sort of wandered in and sat ourselves, and orderes OJs that tasted awful. My nephew decided he didnt like anything on the menu and after a while I decided the same. We waited for a while til the waitress finally came over, asking what we wanted without greeting us. When I apologized because my nephew didnt see anything he liked on the menu and that wed like to pay for the OJs she simply said $4 and walked away. I had to wait for her again to ask her where the ATM was and she said around the corner and walked away..again. I dont usually like to write reviews, especially bad ones, but I really feel like this place is overrated.

You can see everyone ranting and raving about the food. Im just going to say, get there and see for yourself what everyone is talking about. What Id like to take a moment to recognize is the SERVICE! This place gets more action than a Donald Trump election, they have a very confined space to work with and I have never once left, thinking they couldve done one thing better. The team as a whole is always friendly and approachable. The back of the house cranks out quality AND efficiency on a consistent basis. Warning however! Be ready for a nap after a meal here!!! DEF DEF DEF worth a shot if youre even within 50 miles. Make it happen, you wont regret it.

1980s and 90s when I first started going there. I hadnt been back in 20 years, so I figured Id visit again. While the food and service are still top notch, the place is falling apart. The wood on the benches was stained and the varnish worn off, half the lights were out; the other half cracked and yellowed, and the window sills had so much grime, dust, and dead insects on them, it was making me lose my appetite. even the once gleaming metal exterior is now covered in rust and long since calcified bird droppings. Seriously guys, this place is so historic! TAKE CARE OF IT!

Decent menu, what food I did buy was simple and good as it should be. Wouldnt buy juice there again because it just comes from a can anyways. Locals seemed to like it though. Prices varied from very cheap to sort of expensive. My issues were that some of the service staff was standoffish, they are cash only, and the ATM charges you $2.50 to use it. Seemed like a scam to me, since they can get a card reader if they have an ATM and WiFi. Ironic considering it is the modern diner, but their payment system is stuck in 1941. Preferred the Corner Diner down the road.

Modern Diner is a Rhode Island must! Incredible food (I have never been to any other diner that can really compete), cool locale, and staff that is always warm and affectionate. Every time I would come up to visit my sister in Providence, this was a must-do! We got to know the staff over the years (particularly my sister), and when she graduated the whole staff was so kind, even got her card and the whole nine yards! This is a true institution: they care about their product, their customers, and their community. The best that can be said about any restaurant!

I love the food here. You get such large quantities, the price is very cheap and the chefs are so quick. They have a lot of daily specials (I think everyday they have a few new dishes) which is really cool. The only thing I dont really like is that when you first walk in there is a very distinct "poo" smell. After 5 or so minutes you get used to it and dont really notice it anymore but its gross at first and I cant think of what that could possibly be. At least the male staff is nice eye candy ;)

There are so many delicious specials that are available daily. The cheese grits are AMAZING, no matter how you top them and they come with a full plate of two eggs, toast and homefries! Homemade hollandaise is so good and there are many different types of benedicts to choose from. They have lunch during the week, too. My husband tried the meatloaf and mashed potatoes last week and said it was the best meatloaf he has ever had, ever. Awesome food in a true diner setting, I highly recommend!

I love this place. Its kinda small but the menu is extensive. You can find just about everything there. I am in love with the jalapeno bacon grits. I ordered the hash omelette last time. It was okay, I would of rather the eggs not have been so thin. My friend ordered the custard French toast and I understand why they are known for it. It was awesome. Not too sweet and the fruit tasted fresh. I would always recommend this diner if youre in the area. Just a tip it is cash only

Modern Diner is my absolute favorite place to eat in the greater Providence/Pawtucket area. I literally have dreams about their raisin challah french toast- the single most delicious meal I have ever had in my life. I recommend it with 100% satisfaction guaranteed. Get ready for a long wait during the weekend mornings, but its definitely worth it, and all part of the Modern Diner experience!

Modern Diner. The food was very good and the retro diner is pretty cool! Our waiter was VERY good and a really nice guy. They have a pretty good special board. I am always annoyed when businesses are cash only as they are. They can get VERY busy on weekends and honestly they are good but I dont think I would wait in line for hours. But good food and very happy I stopped at this historic spot!

...was all my wife needed to see on the specials menu and I knew we were in the right place. We were driving through Providence to see Brown University when I wandered across this while trying to get back on I-95. I recognized it from a Food Network show. My wife had the Lobster Benedict, I had French Toast with fresh berries and a creamy sauce made with bourbon...we all left happy.

I ordered scrambled eggs with cheese, home fries, and sausage with bacon and toast. The plate was 14$ and I kid you not the portions looked like they were for a 4 year old. For $14 at any other breakfast spot I could have gotten three of the same plate and been full. It tasted OK but how does the measurement add up to the price? Not acceptable.

Its the only place Ill even entertaining waiting in line for breakfast. And its totally worth the 20 plus minute wait (usually inly on the weekends). My recommendation is the grits with eggs and hash. You can get your drink on too. Definitely my hometown place. Check it out, but if youre in line ahead of me, we might have a problem.
