I arrived around noon on Sunday for lunch after a walk around DWG. The hostess upstairs suggested I would be "more comfortable downstairs with the bar and televisions," and insisted even after I said a table was fine as I had come for lunch. A rough start, I was wearing a nice sweater and wasnt disgusting or anything, but who knows. While downstairs the server was sending people up because he said he was busy. Downstairs I sat at the bar and waited ages to get served. Two bartenders were behind the bar, so I dont know what the issue may have been with staff as this was far less busy than most restaurants on a Sunday, but I do know the bartender is moving apartments, the cost of his new apartment and utilities and the roomates he is considering due to the length of conversation with his workmate...all the while thinking "Am I ever thirsty!" I also know all the favorite options on the menu of the other bartender as he described them IN DETAIL to the party of three that sat next to me. So many other issues: I intended to try three beers but because of being ignored I sat with an empty small glass for most of my visit, my lunch (portabello sandwich) arrived after 30 minutes with the lettuce all wilty, presuming from sitting under the heat lamp?? No silverware or napkins and getting anyones attention at this point was annoying. No drink. And because all of this took 1-1/2 hours (beer and a sandwich) I had to ask for a to go box and the check when my food arrived. $16 for a sandwich I did not get to eat and 12 oz of mediocre beer. I had this great plan for a sunny afternoon in Shawnee and this place robbed me of it. Also, the downstairs bathroom doesnt work. I should have walked right out when she told me to go downstairs.

We live in Shawnee and enjoy eating locally! Unfortunately, for the third and last time we have had a horrible experience! We have 4 children so needless to say we have a lot of patience!! We arrived at the restaurant at 12:45 on a Sunday. It was not busy! After we ordered 4 pink lemonades and 2 beers it took 25 min to just get the lemonade!! Beer, another 10 min after that!!!! We ordered appetizers at the same time we ordered the drinks and it took an hour and 15 minutes to just get the apps that the server told us would be out of the oven soon........ WE ORDERED HUMMUS!!!!!!! It doesnt even go into the oven!!!! We are very easy going people but by this point, our patience was gone!! After another half hour of waiting after we finished our app. The server came to us after we asked him to check on our entrees. He eventually came back and told us the kitchen was working as hard as they could. At that point we told him we were leaving and to forget it. He charged us full price for the items we had already received and admitted they were short staffed. I was trained classically as a professional chef. Our server Dave ( the manager) was very kind and polite but, he should have warned us about the slow service. I understand being short staffed but this experience is inexcusable!!! We have always recommended Gem &Keystone as a great local place to eat but after today we will never eat here or recommend it! As you know, in the restaurant business, word of mouth is everything!!!

My girlfriend and I came here because the reviews were so awesome! I can report that we left here knowing that those reports were true! For me, it was important the evening go well because it was my girlfriends birthday! I had the pineapple rum glazed pork loin which was delicious! What was really good about the pineapple rum glazed pork loin was that it was Wood-Fired, moist along with an explosion of flavors of goodness. My girlfriend had the crab cakes. The crab cakes were mostly crab not filler and had the perfect texture. The crab had a lot flavor. Each bite melted in your mouth leaving us with a longing for more! The sauce with the crab meat was an added treat. At first you ignore it because the crab cake is so good, but since its there you try it. Needless to say it adds another level of goodness! The rice and vegetables werent as flavorable but that was corrected with a dash of salt to bring it to its full potential! We sat on the back deck overlooking a small stream. We arrived just before dusk to experience the soft white lights while listening to just the right mix of soft music in the background. We decided to have dessert which consisted of key lime pie. I had a dark coffee which was a perfect blend of coffee and rum. Their in-house made key lime pie is my one girlfriends favorite desserts. According to her it was one of the best shes had in a long time. Desiree was our server and she was delightful and attentive.

AMAZING!!!! Family and myself came here(1/17/15) for my wifes birthday we had a group of 14. I understand that is not easy to accommodate, but they did, and it could have not worked out better. Since we had such a big group we got a few standard appetizers. The wings were INSANE! probably the best I have ever had. As well as the nachos with pulled chicken. Highly recommended. For dinner I wanted a burger, The special peppercorn steak with shrimp sounded amazing, but I was having steak the next day. I got a burger with the "El Diablo" topper. I cut into the burger and immediately smelt the freshness of the peppers in the Diablo relish. Everything tasted fresh, and clean. My wife had (i believe) a Pork tenderloin with cranberry jam. The pork was juicy, and seasoned perfectly...I know because I tasted it. Our waitress was extremely friendly, and took great care of us. I forget the name of the beer I had, but it was one that was brewed with local honey. Refreshing, and clean. Great everyday beer. HIGHLY recommended. If we are in the area again, there is no doubt we will be back.

I give the tavern 5 stars because I love hanging out there after a good hike or fishing trip. The food is excellent. The ribs and nachos are standouts. The vegan chili is so good. All the the burgers, the pulled pork, the trout... All winners. The beer is a little inconsistent (in my opinion), but they usually nail their porters. Some of the porters I have had have been from here. Again, never quite the same from natch to batch, but very good. Folks are raving about the imperial bourbon porter. I dont like bourbon beer so I cant rate it, but the porter with coco nibs is so amazing when they make it. Just a fun place to hang out. Big deck out back looking out towards Shawnee Resort. The prices are a tad on the high side with the pulled pork being the best deal at $9. Surely worth a stop. I wish it was still called Sam Sneads though. That was a very cool and historic name.

Our second time going here our waitress remembered us and our ordering habits (vegetarian, and someone who hates pretty much everything that is a vegetable or cheese) this wouldnt have been impressive if it hadnt been more than a month since we first went there. So, needless to say, the service is excellent. They have some pretty great locally brewed beers as well. The menu is good, nothing extraordinary but the three meals Ive had (fish and chips, a smothered veggie burger, and a portobello burger) were all very good. I have been a little disappointed by the chips you get with the burgers, their fries are good and can be substituted. The prices are also reasonable and to be expected somewhere like this. All in all I would recommend giving this cool little place a shot.
