Whos down for some good ole fashioned pub food? The Food Hounds were uber-excited to kick back and enjoy a GREAT little treasure in Reading, Pennsylvania called The Speckled Hen Cottage Pub and Ale House. The overall vibe in the Hen is laid back; perfect spot to go for a drink or a bite to eat. If you are a beer drinker, they actually change up their taps on a weekly basis - so its always a bevy of fresh new flavor for their clientele. Now, if you are drawn to the sound of music like Lush and I... youll be ecstatic to know that they have open mic night on Thursdays! It happened to be Thursday when we stopped in; but since the entertainment normally starts later in the evening... we missed out on getting in on the fun. The ambiance of the place is dark and romantic, perfect for college kids seeking an inexpensive spot to hang out, a first date or an older couple looking to head out for a night cap. On to the food... Starters, we tried the Classic Scotch Egg - WHOAH... first time ever sampling the taste of this bad boy! This sucker is just so ridiculous that it works... a hardboiled egg, enclosed in a pocket of seasoned ground sausage and then FRIED!!! This egg is slammin and served on a spicy grain mustard sauce. The Char Grilled Pub Burger sported a 6oz slab of ground sirloin doused with cheddar cheese (Mmmm CHEESE!!!) and bacon... Bacon... BACON! Add the delectable fries and POW... a great meal for the guy on the go looking for a quick bite. The Baked Braided Pretzel with Crab Cheddar Au Gratin was a VERY unique creation. A large homemade pretzel drowning in cheddar and huge chunks of tender crab... Mmm CHEESE! The WIN for me was quite simply the Cottage Sheppards Pie. A hefty portion entombed in a small crock-pot of love. This is comfort food at its finest; seasoned ground sirloin topped off with buttery mashed potatoes... Off the hook! I could eat that all night long... it was like buttery heaven on my tastebuds! They have a lot to choose from at Speckled Hen, make sure you stop on in and try them on for size, you certainly wont be disappointed.

This restaurant can do a lot better, and has. Tonight I was disappointed. Vegetarian korma was a plate of undercooked (ie, crunchy and flavorless) chopped vegetables (microwaved, I suspect, in some line cooks hurry to send it out). It had no cashews, and a spicy sauce without cream that didnt resemble korma sauce, but would have been OK had it been hot, at least. Chicken Tikka Masala had the exact same spicy sauce, which wasnt tikka masala sauce, either. I know, I know: why order vegetarian and/or Indian food at a cottage pub? But I wonder: why put it on the menu if the kitchen is just going to punt it?

loved it. unique atmosphere, great selection of beers on draft and delicious homemade comfort foods. i love the chicken pot pie and the desserts are to die for. staff, especially the bar manager audrey, go out of their way to take good care of you. prices arevery reasonable considering the high quality of the food which is definitely a step above the usual pub fare.they have their own parking. neighborhood is safe. lots of romantic charm, especially in winter with the fireplaces burning.

Ive been to Judys and it was good but this one, Im not impressed. The room we ate in was too small,I ordered the Thai chicken and jasmine rice...the flavor was good except I hate re-heated chicken and I cant believe I paid $15 for a plate of undercooked rice and thigh meat chicken. My mother got a burger that was over cooked with a dry bun...needless to say we wont be visiting this place again...

This place is never open. I had a gift card to use from judys on cherry when they gave us awful service and tried to make up for it. Theyre never open. I came here with a few people and they were closed by 930. They also werent open the whole first half of a week. I never saw a pub closed so much or so early. I cant tell you about the food because there never open or they close at stupid hours.

Make reservations if you want to sit close to the fireplace-- it can be a very nice ambiance. The food is tasty for a pub but portion sizes seem to have recently shrunk just a bit. The prices are good though. The service is okay-- attentive enough, though not brimming over with friendliness. But we enjoy it and will keep going back.

We enjoyed our dinner, after having this place recommended by food-loving friends. Appetizers and main courses (London Broil and Lamb Chops) were very good. This is a fun and festive place. The music can get a bit loud, and on a Friday night it is a challenge to have a quiet conversation over dinner.

“Excellent dinner” We ate dinner here on a Friday night. The service was excellent. The short ribs were tender and the flavor was outstanding. My husbands filet was perfectly cooked. Dont save this restaurant for special occasions - it is too good to visit only a couple times a year.

After a long day this is the perfect place to relax with a great drink and delicious, made-to-order food in a very cozy atmosphere. Soups will never disappoint, just as our favorite veal specialties. Dont miss this place! There arent many around like this anymore!

One of the few good bars in Reading proper. A bit too pricey for my taste. Doesnt seem to keep people for going though. Usually a crowd. Affiliated with Judies and it shows in the food. (A good thing)

A nice surprise! Small and cozy, food was excellent. The only complaint is the lighting, it was dark.other then that, i highly recommend!

Food was ok. I had a pot pie that was very small and amateur. Salad was decent. For the price i prefer Judys or even 201 West.
