STUDENTS: Do NOT order from How Lee!! tl;dr: DONT GET FOOD FROM HOW LEE UNLESS YOU SUPPORT RESTAURANTS WHO DEMAND TIPS FOR THEIR DRIVERS AND DONT APPRECIATE AMERICAN CAPITALISM/BUSINESS PRACTICE. So, Im a student at CMU, got hungry one night, decided to order some Chinese food from How Lee. Seems to have good food reviews, hospitable, etc. I ordered using Eatstreet, and they automatically charge a delivery fee so I decided to skip out on the tip. Sorry, I know its good practice, but Im also a poor student. :( I then immediately get a phone call from How Lee, possibly an older Asian gentleman, and he questions me if I have just come to the U.S. ...uh, whaaaat?? I say no, Im an American, born and raised, and then he tells me that in America you have to tip and that the driver works for the tips and on and on. Listen, Im all for tipping hardworking people, you know, Ive taken jobs in food too and its no easy business for sure. But if the restaurant is DEMANDING that I pay an optional tip for a delivery, when there is ALREADY a delivery charge, Im a little bit miffed. Okay, ANGRY. And then the gentlemen, God bless his soul, tells me that he is very much happy to NOT have my business, which Im sure he is entitled to. Im just letting you folks out there know that I was berated and refused service just because I didnt tip. So Im like, okay, refund my order then. And then he says I should go do it myself and that he doesnt want to have business with me. ....okayyyyyy...!!! >:((( As fellow students, I would suggest we NOT support How Lee, though they may have good food, until they learn what is means to have... nicer(?) customer service. -Josh

I always wanted to try it - lots of Asian people there - authentic food right.. We got sited in the back its ok.. We didnt get chopsticks - Im white and no master of eating with chopsticks but we got only forks and had to ask twice for the knives. We ordered three dishes - chili shrimp, garlic chicken and beef cumin. Garlic chicken was ok, pretty good actually, beef cumin was pretty spicy, and tasty aside from chili peppers that were dry beyond reason, maybe its authentic idk, but nothing should be cutting your mouth inside when you eat right.. Anyways we are not cranky people separated those from the rest of the food and it was pretty tasty. That leaves us with chili shrimp - tasted like bad pot pie. Three dishes were on the same level of spicy - we got bland shrimp, right on spot chicken, and really spicy beef. And got the check thrown at us mid meal.. My husband is a generous man, and we worked food service at times and he left more than 20%. I wouldnt service was bad even for Asian restaurants standards, but I just felt unwelcome there.. Not Asian enough I think. I really wanted to love it.

They have a normal chinese menu which is just mediocre generic chinese so you probably want to look on the back of the menu for the authentic sechuan food. Ive tried the kung pao and chonquing chicken which are both insanely spicy (and I typically order spiciness level 10 at thai restaurants in pittsburgh and am disappointed). The kung pao had better flavor, but both were good. I also ordered the eggplant in garlic sauce which was disturbingly oily. It tasted good but was literally swimming in oil. For lunch, their service is fast and friendly enough -although I got the impression they were watching to see how I would react to how spicy the food was. Delivery is reasonably speedy but they really go above and beyond when ordering over the phone. There was a slight language barrier, but I was able to order 3 lunch dishes without a menu in front of me and the guy on the phone had great recommendations.

Enjoyed the items off both the Sichuan Menu and the Traditional Menu. Big props to the Mongolian Beef and the chongquin chicken (wow.. so nomnomnom). The only thing I was not into in our spread was the Crab Rangoon -- filling was a little too sweet for me. Super fast delivery, very fresh food, and the delivery person was polite. Since I cant rank Decor, I will instead assign the points toward the menu (just wish it was online..) and presentation of our order. Our order was huge and everything was perfect, no mistakes. It was packed well - no leaks and even though it was delivery, everything looked lovely when we opened it. Hot and fresh -- steam still coming off the dumplings! They even packed it nicely into boxes and provided ample chopsticks, sauces, etc. Looking forward to eating here again.

Order from them awhile back 2 years ago found roach in food . Took it back to show them and they said they would make it again . Why would I want food again when the roach was in it in the first place. Asked for a refund they denied . Come back 2 years later ordered shrimp with garlic sauce only to receive the tiniest shrimp ever . No literally baby shrimp the kind that you find in scampi .. Even the worst of the worst Chinese restaurants Ive been too serve their shrimp w/ garlic sauce with medium to jumbo shrimp . Thats how you get the most out of the sauce . I will continue paying the extra couple bucks and go to Mandarin Gourmet . Theeee absolute best Chinese Restaurant in town ! Cant say I didnt try .

Ordered takeout and they said it would take 25 minutes. Arrived about 20 minutes after I called and sat there for over a half hour. Some of the worst takeout timing Ive ever experienced. Also, the cashier tried to small talk me at the end as damage control. In addition, they leave all the prepared soup and rice for takeout sitting at the cashier. This sacrifices the heat of the meal just so packing takeout orders can be easier for them. The food was subpar, as far as Chinese goes. General Tso was a little spongey, and my girlfriends chicken Lo Mein was very tasteless and bland. Probably will not return.

We come here for what has become our favorite item at How Lee: the beef noodle soup. Straight up Sichuan style cooked in red hot chili soup, with tender beef and fresh leaves, these noodles cannot be beat, at least in the Squirrel Hill area. Sichuan Gourmet has several different beef noodle items as well, but they are somewhat inconsistent in their quality, and we have never found that to be a problem at How Lee. Although this is on their Appetizers menu, it is definitely enough for a full meal for one person, and being cheaper than a meal this is very much worth it.

If you get take out expect to wait 1-2 hours. Weve ordered multiple times and have never gotten our food in under an hour. Which is interesting consider they dont deliver past 3 miles. On top of this the service is terrible, we were given the wrong food and when we called back to tell them, they told us we were wrong. I always thought the customer was right, but I guess not at How Lee. Very displeased with the receptionist. Other then that the food is very good. Over priced but very good.

We ordered the Chongqing dumplings, vegetable ho fun, and chicken chili hot pot. All were excellent: the dumplings werent rubbery and came with a nice spicy oil to enhance the flavor while the hot pot was sauced with a wonderfully full flavor and slight numbing, a great sensation. Parking is on the street. How Lee is very close to numerous other businesses, so you can spend a lot of time in and around here. We went down the street to get bubble tea for dessert.
