Live jazz and karaoke and awesome fried fish/chicken/shrimp specials on Fridays. . .what more could you ask for in a cozy local spot. Went out with the hubby for date night in the neighborhood and walked in on live music and singing. We both opted for the fried chicken special, which came with two sides. We both chose greens and macaroni & cheese. I had no idea there was feta in the mac & cheese and my pregnant, sensitive nose couldnt stand the spoiled milk smell. After talking to Donna, the owner, she politely explained there was feta in the dish and offered a substitute. I got the baked sweet potatoes and was satisfied. The chicken was moist, crispy, and flavorful. The cornbread was a bit dry for my taste, but good, nonetheless. The greens were as good as my mothers, with a nice smoky taste and not too salty. I enjoyed a blended melon and mint drink, which would have been great, if it wasnt for all of the melon chunks and half-ground seeds. I couldnt enjoy it through my straw. It also tasted as if the melons werent ripe enough, as the drink is not sweet. Hubby had one with pineapple, ginger and mint, which was much more flavorful, but almost as chunky as mine. For dessert, we ordered a couple of slices of sweet potato pie to-go. The pie is always good. Youll just have to try it to see what I mean. The best part of our experience was the genuinely warm atmosphere. Not only were Donna and her staff cordial, but even the live entertainment was friendly and engaging. The singer even dedicated a few songs to our baby-to-be. We really enjoy this hidden gem and plan on patronizing more often!

With a senior with two knee replacements, it was obvious that stepping up to get in this place indicated that they did not welcome any disability. Once we entered, we were not allowed to sit in the booth (we were told it was reserved for a party of five), although no party ever came for those seats. Our waitress could not answer basic questions, and made no attempt to find out. Once we ordered, we were served beverages. As we waited, a party of four (we were three) entered; their orders were taken and they were served promptly, while we still waited. Finally, we were asked what else we were drinking, so we ordered Mimosas & orange juice. These were served, meanwhile we simply waited for our food while those who came after us were enjoying their meals. No matter what we ordered, we should have been served well before the larger party entered. Needless to say, we opted to leave cash for our drinks on the table and leave. Could it be that they prefer City College students and faculty, even on Sunday? We ended up at Cafe Latte on Lenox before driving to Philadelphia. No, we will never return. Other reviewers seems to enjoy the food; unfortunately, we never got that far.

I been planning on this visiting this location for months. Today I ended up on this side of Harlem today and said what day is better than the PRESENT! I went around brunch time on a Friday. I consider myself a French Toast connisueer. The organic challah french toast with organic maple syrup was amazing. Great flavor and cooked perfectly. The menu they had was very diverse which definitely makes me want to make another visit VERY SOON. Everything from sandwiches to soups to salads to delicious entrées. The staff and service was very personable and that is something I value just as much as great food. The staff made me feel at home . Guess thats why it is called Home Sweet Harlem. Met the owner and she is as sweet as pie and truly has a passion for food & her business. PLEASE DONT LET THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS KEEP YOU FROM STOPPING INTO THIS HARLEM GEM!! I Plan on becoming a regular there. Hope the staff doesnt get tired of seeing my face :)

CASH ONLY! Very much a local place, lacking the polish most travelers would expect from a NYC restaurant. Service was acceptable if not a little awkward. Selection was underwhelming, with price structure a little confusing ($12 or $20 breakfast plates with many of the same items showing up on both menus). My frittata came with copious amounts of food (for only $12) however the frittata itself was salty and again underwhelming. While I might have missed the sign, I was not alerted that they were cash only until after I ordered which meant I had to find an ATM before I could pay for my food.

Horrible service. Very overpriced, $12 for a croissant and two eggs, $20 for an omelet. Service was incredibly slow, took about an hour to get a croissant and two eggs. I asked the waitress why this was taking so long and instead of listening and responding politely, she raised her voice and started talking over me. Very rude, especially when you are being made to wait like that. Then, when it was time to pay the bill they told me the credit card machine wasnt working and I needed to go to the ATM. Honestly a horrible experience. At least the eggs werent half bad.

Absolutely love the place. No, it is not "fast food," but who wants that? When I go out with friends, I enjoy their company enough to take time. The wait is totally worth it and I prefer food that is freshly prepared with attention and dedication. This is also one of the places with the most welcoming atmosphere here in Harlem, where so many just seem to want to make a quick buck off the changing demographic. Very homey indeed, with interesting, varied furniture and changing art exhibits. And friendly service!

The first time I went to HSH, I honestly was not very impressed. I had turkey bacon, grits, toast, eggs, and orange juice. I am glad that I gave it a second try, because their fish and grits meal was AMAZING! The fish was fried and had a side of eggs and grits with butter (you can have cheese with your grits too if thats your thing). The only meals I have had at the restaurant were breakfast, but I would be interested in returning and checking out their lunch/dinner options.

Unacceptable service. After we ordered, we waited around 1 hour and still had no food or message from the waitress. Only 1 or 2 other tables of people but we didnt get a refill on anything. We were told several times the order was coming out and it did not. Finally, the food came out and my vegetarian girlfriends meal had sausage after requesting no meat. We left immediately after. Cool spot, would like to try again but unacceptable this time.

The food is great but the real reason Id come back is because of the sever Daisy. She made my experience with her customer service which goes above. But what really did it was her performance she has a beautiful singing voice. I wouldnt be surprised if she ends up on Broadway someday. If you come to home sweet harlem make sure you ask for Daisy. Who knows maybe if your lucky youll catch her performing if not ask her she loves to sing.

The service is great, the food is superb! Not overly crowded nor is there a long wait! This is my second time here and the food is just as amazing as the first time I came with a party of 10! The prices are very reasonable (not expensive for such quality food). The Chef is AMAA-ZINGG and very accommodating. He personally comes to the table to make sure everything is up to par! I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! (and Im a very picky eater)
