Ill admit the brash yet charming waitresses with their sexy South Philly sarcasm gives me a nice warm feeling in my heart and I love how the cast of characters in this place make me feel like Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. However, this warm, loving, nurturing South Philly vibe doesnt change the fact that the food makes my stomach feel more like Jack Nicholson in The Shining when he breaks the bathroom door with an axe screaming, "Heres Johnny!" Only for me its my stomach screaming, "Heres scrambled eggs!" Cmon people! Can we at least do scrambled eggs and cheese in a way that doesnt taste like military powdered eggs with 1% milk? If you dare get anything besides maybe a deli sandwich, all I can say is I warned you that your gut flora is in for some bad bacteria.

Its getting harder to find a decent old-school diner nowadays, with everyone trying to update and branching off into different gimmicks and trends. Melrose Diner is a breath of fresh air in this regard. You walk in, and youre greeted by two massive lunch counters hiding the kitchen in the back, and surrounded by booths. Its an old-fashioned seat yourself deal, and once you do, a server is usually with you as soon as your coats off. Im originally from New Jersey, so I hold diners to a pretty high standard, but I couldnt find a flaw with this place. Good service, good burgers, good prices and a cozy atmosphere combined with 24 hour convenience and prime location make this the only diner in South Philly worth considering. PS: Try the blueberry pie.

Just got back from the Melrose Diner, service was good, food was good. The ladies bathroom was not air conditioned, not broke just has no air condition. Dirty, filth bathroom, and too small for the amount of customers it serves. I am from South Philly and have gone to this diner as a teenager and young married, to not care about your bathrooms and comfort of your customers who keep you in business is a DISGRACE!!! STEP UP TO THE PLATE AND HAVE AN AIR CONDITONED BATHROOM, ALWAYS CLEAN AND LARGE ENOUGH.

After 50 years of eating and loving it, I now have to say the New Owners have ruined the place. They purchase cheap food from 2nd rate suppliers. They have moved out many of the great favorites like the MP-1--are you kidding me! Yes you can still get a chicken cutlet if you like fat & gristle with it. The outside changes are disgusting looking. What a shame. Well I guess 50 years is a good run but it still makes me mad that I cant enjoy a tasty MP-1 platter with gravy and mash. WHAT A SHAME.

Its a diner. You expect a coffee cup that never goes empty, greasy fried stuff, breakfast at all hours. In a few weeks of looking into moving to Philly and eating here with a friend, we loved every moment. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and late hours we have eaten here and enjoyed it. Sure the late night service is a bit slow, but honestly what diner isnt? Looking forward to coming here on weekends for breakfast with friends in a few weeks when I move to Philly.

Not much of variety on the menu. Food wasnt really that good. Had to send my buffalo wings back because it was just regular chicken wings with hot sauce not buffalo wing sauce dumped all over it. And they keep the air conditioning on blast as to say we dont want you here long. That place was freezing. If I had to work there I would be waiting on tables with a coat on. Its a shame i live right up the street but I dont plan on going back there any time soon.

Melrose has always been a fixture in my life since childhood. Everyone is always super friendly on the surface which is all that matters. You can occasionally catch them staring or being professionally short with you and thats fine too. Its been like that all my life, dont expect it to change, dont need it to. Food is great, they train their servers to be über gracious and I dont mind tipping heavily. Get down there and eat!

This is the perfect atmosphere for a South Philly diner. Its not too small or too big...the perfect size for a diner where the service can be attentive enough. The only reason I didnt rate this the full 5 stars is because the food isnt as good as in many other diners in Philly and South Jersey. I had a chicken parm sandwich that just didnt taste that great. But for the low prices and great ambiance, I still give it 4/5.

Right across from the urgent care center. we went in to get some coffee while someone we were with had to see a Dr. We just wanted to sit a bit and get some coffee while we were waiting. The hostess who sat us and got our coffee was very nice, told us we could sit as long as we like, then the actual waitress and manager kept asking us rudely if we were going to order anything.

I will not return to the Melrose unless I read that they do a complete renovation under new ownership. Everything there is frozen in time, including the sickly yellow of nicotine that coats everything in the dining room. Mediocre food at best in a zero-atmosphere environment. Perhaps acceptable to stoners who dont know better; but for a Philly institution, this place is the pitts.

Food sucked big time and service sucked even bigger. I hated that I spent my New Year ringing it in there. Yuck...left the worst taste in my mouth ever! I had to eat somewhere else after that, just to get rid of the taste. HORRIBLE...not sure if theyre living off their past glory, but the present is not too bright for them. Worst meal I had in a LONG time. Fire the chef!

Everybody who has written complaints is just unable to move on. Visiting it for the first time this morning, and therefore having no expectations or grandpas memories, I thought it was great. Our meals were on the table within 10 minutes, coffee was hot, orange juice - cooled, waitress was nice and got a great tip from our table. Excellent place in its category.

I love this place food is always top notch...their mozarella sticks r to die 4...i dont live in south Philadelphia...but the food is worth traveling for...but dont sit at the counter...its a tight fit...wish they would remodel so the seating was more spacious...still so worth the trip and the staff are knowledgeable about the menu and give A1 SERVICE!!

Its not the Melrose of days past. A lot of the little things that made Melrose special disappeared and it has become more of a typical diner. The little details such as the pads of butter you would receive which are now the typical butter spreads make it feel like another Greek diner. Its no longer a place I would go out of my way to hit.

Had a great dinner with 2 adults and 3 children. Good portion sizes which included choice of soups and salads, sides and included dinner roll. Cool retro feel that you dont get in newer places. Great homemade pie selection. Good service and free parking which after spending a few days in Philly with parking violations to boot was awesome .
