I used to go here for lunch almost once a week for the past year and a half, after today I will never go back. The buffet to go policy has changed, you are no longer able to choose your own food is you get to go. The hippy lady that runs the place fills it for you, and she is less than generous with portions. I dont understand the point of offering to go at the buffet if you cant choose your own food. The lady got mad at me when I said "what are you doing, can I not choose my own food now?" she turned and in a very angry voice told me no I could not choose, and that I should have know that before I ordered, the policy changed last week. I walked out, the policy is the dumbest thing Ive ever heard of, if she cannot make money off to go orders she shouldnt offer them, She doesnt even ask what you want she just slops some food in a container. The food was never that good anyway but it was cheap and close to work, no I have to find a new indian restaurant......any suggestions?

One of the tastier Indian restaurants Ive been too. Huge fan of the tandoori chicken. Buffett is awesome. The last time I went I was put off by the service. I came in with my wife and in-laws at 8:30 and was grudgingly seated(they close at 10). We didnt have our drink orders taken until 9:15. The place was relatively quiet and there were a few employees all sitting around talking. The server seemed to be quite short and when we finished our meals, he mentioned that each entree came with some ice cream afterward. He quickly followed that statement up with its not very good though. Ive eaten at Swagat several times and have always enjoyed the ice cream. We left the restaurant after having paid and not tipped just before they officially closed. Not happy with the service but the food is always excellent.

I have yet to find what Im now dubbing the "holy grail combination" of good chicken tikka masala and good naan at the same location in Portland. Its killing me! The best Indian food Ive ever had was in Thailand (Tandoori Nights). The second best was in Denver (Little India). The third best was in the Mumbai airport on our way to Kenya (I cant remember the name of the place). I would say Ive had a couple others that were decent in Denver - Yak and Yettis Tikka Masala was pretty good - but Ive yet to have a good tikka masala here at home. Its enough to make me want to go to India, learn how to make it, come back and open up a freaking restaurant! Haha....that said - this was the best tikka masala that Ive had here - but the naan was nasty.

Prices have gone up to $10.95 for the lunch buffet. Make sure you go early in the lunch hour, or else the food is pretty stale and there are slim pickings - youll find yourself desperately scraping the bottom of the tikka masala bowl in order to get something to eat if you get there after 1 PM. Service is okay, and the food so-so. Its the same typical variety you see at almost every Indian buffet. Theres a ton of amazing Indian food in Portland, just not in downtown Portland. Even the sister restaurant (also named Swagat) out on Beav-Hillsdale highway is better. Convenience-wise, theres a tiny parking lot but its almost always full; there is paid street parking near by.

Best Indian restaurant Ive found in Portland. The food and buffet is actually very similar to what youll find at any other Indian restaurant, but what makes this place stand out is the much nicer setting at the same price. You know how some Indian buffets are just a sad cafeteria line of Croc-Pots in front of a wall with a single cliche poster of a jeweled elephant? This place actually has nice lighting, beautiful copper cauldrons for each of the buffet dishes, large hand-carved wooded wall decorations, and nice dishware and silverware. Its simply a *nicer* place than the other 4-5 Indian restaurants in town.

Out of all the Indian restaurants Ive been to in the past, this one stands out so much further than the rest. For meat eaters, theyre generous with their proportions (chicken & goat meat galore), and for vegans theres an epic amount of food options thatll leave you filled to the max, and full of amazing flavor. This restaurant has nailed down the traditional spices and flavors that your mouth seeks when searching for traditional indian food. The lunch buffet is $9.99, so really its not a bad deal to enjoy a meal under $10 and experience a comfortable, clean, and generous food experience.

I hadnt ever been to Swagat before, but for my friends birthday we went there, and it wasnt bad at all. I was quite impressed for my first time eating it. You cant really go wrong with their 8.95 lunch buffet. Do not go towards the end though (2:30 pm). That is where the bottom of the barrel type food comes out, but if you go before that (starts at 11:30) its quite tasty. I love when they throw out fresh naan bread and foods. I love the coconut dessert at the end as well. Yum! I doubt id go here and pay the higher prices for dinner, but for lunch I am a fan!

Wow. Love Swagat. I think Swagat and New Delhi on Barbur on the two best places for Indian in Portland. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and its a classy establishment. Nicely spiced, traditional Indian cuisine--no cutting corners or commercializing the product here. I had the lamb samosa, pakora, raita, and had the lamb vindaloo thali. I used to live in London, so know my Indian cuisine, and their thali is spot on. Some of the best I have had outside of London. Their rice was nicely cooked and not too dry, and they have some fun adult cocktails.

My guy and I have been eating here regularly--at least 3 times a month for the last 3.5years. We are vegetarians and I am also sugar free. The food is almost always good and sometimes exceptionally good. Not gourmet, but reasonably priced. They serve dhosas which are wheat free huge crepes and they are delicious. We get the spinach palak paneer, and the dhosa regualrly. We can count on them to be good sometimes well try other things like their okra curry dish and its inconsistent. Reasonable price, good food and decent someetimes good service

Went to an Indian ballet and saw that this restaurant was providing food for the artist so we swung by to check it out. The have a lunch buffet for $10.95 from 11-2:30pm. We went for dinner. We had chicken pakora and lamb samosa for $7-$8 each. Dinner we order lamb curry and shrimp masala. Ala carte comes with just rice and its around $15-$17 depending on the animal. Thali dinner comes with rice, 4 vegetarian sides and dessert for $20-$25. Service was fast and friendly. Food hot and oh so good! We will definitely come back again and again.

I usually give a place a chance but its kinda hard when they ignore your table and attend to the other non minority tables. My wife, her brother and I all ordered the thali dinner portions, so they just brought the meat of the meal first, one so salty that it was inedible, the other two sitting there without the rice, or bread etc. For a good five to ten minutes. Now the food i would rate a 3.5 to 4, but if service could get a negative number, I would give a -5*s. Its a shame, but hopefully they see and fix these issues.
