Ive been here twice now, and think its time for a review. The atmosphere is hard to beat. This is a good sized, attractively designed and laid out pub, although not significantly different inside than a lot of places. What sets it apart is the INCREDIBLE location and view. The back doors literally open up onto a beautiful oregon coast beach. In the summer you can watch surfers, beach babes, and dory boats coming in with the days fresh catch of seafood. In the winter, theres no better place to watch a storm. As the countless medals hanging on the walls suggest, the quality here is top notch. Theres a good variety of expertly crafted beers on tap, including a standard line-up of beers and several seasonal releases, including such infamous beers as the Mother of all Storms. Ive had both breakfast and lunch here now, and the food is on par with the beer - very tasty, and a notch above what you find in your average brew-pub for sure. On my two visits, service has been mixed. The first time, on a busy sunny warm early spring day that brought a lot of people out to the beach, the staff was a bit overwhelmed, and the service was a little slow, but they were doing the best they could, and were very friendly and apologetic about their ability to serve the unexpected off-season crowd. The second time things were great. Our server was very attentive, and the bar manager made many stops at our table as well to make sure we were having a great time and enjoying our experience in Pacific City. Id give this place a solid 5 on service if it werent for the first experience. Selection is good. Theres a good variety of styles on their standard line-up, including one or two styles that you dont generally see most breweries making. On top of that, the seasonals are quite varied and interesting, even if theyre not really pushing any limits and getting too experimental. Like I mentioned before, the food has always been a step above what I usually expect to find in a brew pub. As for value, I think the food prices are a bit high, but theyre the only show in town, the quality is good, and I dont mind spending an extra dollar or two per item to enjoy it with that kind of view.

Ive been coming to the Pelican Pub almost since its opening and my latest trip told me two things - apparent change in management and focus from a fun place to visit to a tourist cash cow. Every business needs to make money to stay in business but the Pelican Pub seems to have taken it a step further. We went to eat breakfast, myself, wife, daughter and a friend of hers. First the breakfast menu has changed dramatically removing eggs to order and replacing them with scrambled and Im betting not from fresh eggs but from a carton. The crepes filled with fruit and whipping cream, the whipping cream obviously from a container and not fresh and pancakes that looked more like large seagull droppings spattered on the plate and tasteless. My wifes meal included bell pepper with the little sticky label still on the cooked pepper which indicates it wasnt washed or prepared properly and the potatoes were not fresh, probably a day old. Coffee and juice completed the meal. Total cost for a relatively small breakfast was a sweet $84.00. The waitress staff was pleasant and served the meal quickly. I would not recommend the Pelican any more - taking such drastic cuts to meal preparation is unsatisfactory especially at those prices. Pelican Pub should consider replacing its management staff and getting back to basics - they use to have one of the best Eggs Benedict.

As other reviewers have noted, the location and atmosphere is very hard to beat. We went for lunch the day before Thanksgiving and there was a pleasant-sized crowd--a far cry from the hordes that presumably descend in the summer, but not so small that the place seemed dead. A storm was blowing in off the ocean, and we got a booth next to the (big) windows to watch it--I couldnt imagine a better place to eat and have a few beers. My smoky scallop pizza was excellent; my girlfriend enjoyed her burger as well. Prices were on the high side for Oregon ($13 or $14 for each, if I recall correctly). Service was prompt and friendly. My main complaint is with the beers themselves: Pelican beer costs more there, at the source ($5 for a pint, $5.50 for a 20oz) than it does at many places in Eugene. Furthermore, they only had their standard lineup on draft--one of the things I look forward to in going to a brewpub is trying the small-batch or experimental brews that havent made it to the wider market yet (see: Deschutes in Bend or Rogue in Newport). Also, the gift-shop prices were exorbitant: $48 for a screen-printed zip hoodie? I dont think so. Id easily go back if I were in the area, but I probably wont go out of my way to eat there again.

I used to love coming here, but they have really gone downhill in the last few years, both in food quality and service. We recently tried to call in a breakfast order, even though the last time we ordered take out we were disappointed, but we decided to give it another chance. The girl who answered the phone couldnt find what we wanted to order and clearly couldnt handle the pressure of taking an order over the phone so put us on with the manager. The manager told us the menu we were looking at was several years old, like we were stupid for looking at the menu that is linked on Google maps. He directed us to the website, where after some searching we found the lunch and dinner menu, but no breakfast menu. We called back and told the manager there was no breakfast menu on the website. He said dismissively that the website was new and thats why there was no breakfast menu. At that point, we had had enough of the nonsense and decided to go somewhere else for breakfast. I wont be going here anymore, which is too bad because it used to be my favorite restaurant on the coast. But now, the staff are rude and the food is not as good as it used to be.

So we called to order breakfast, and McKay answered the phone, um oh my god mmmkay. Like oh my god for real. It was like talking to a high school valley girl who had no clue what she was doing. She must be good looking and hired on that basis alone. The menu that is online is out of date and the items are no longer available. This was more than McKay could handle "omg, for real?" "As if" she she put Zach the "manager " on the phone and he directed us to their website which he claimed would have "everything we need " Zach apparently has not actually looked at the Web page because it does not offer a breakfast menu. We called back and both McKay and Zach were obviously put out by our two phone calls and were short and snippy. When I began to complain about my interaction with McKay and her inability to handle the telephone he became upset and said " Im done talking to you" and hung up the phone. Obviously they were in no way prepared for the everest like challenge of taking a breakfast order over the phone, sorry to have complicated your morning kiddies. Anyway Im over the pelican and the lame arrogant attitude of its employees.
