I have now visited Granite City on two occasions. The first occasion, about a month ago, was a nice experience overall. There was a wait to be seated but thats no problem as it was a Saturday night. The hostesses were not however friendly or forthcoming about how long that wait would be. We were seated after about thirty minutes. The service was very slow but as the restaurant was very busy and our server was friendly we didnt mind. The food and drinks were decent but the prices were a bit high for the quality of them. On our second visit today we had a much much worse experience. We again were greeted by an apathetic hostess who told us there would be a wait. Considering the restaurant was only about fifty percent full and there was multiple staff members standing around this seemed very odd. We were seated about twenty minutes after that. The host who did seat us was very friendly and took the time to explain the specials to us. That was the only highlight of this visit. After twenty minutes of sitting at the table we hadnt been greeted by our server let alone had we had our drink orders taken despite multiple staff members walking by our table multiple times. After this we flagged down a passing server who said he would take out drink orders and send out our server. After an additional fifteen minutes, still no drinks and no server. A family who was sitting near by also at this point had been sitting without any service for about fifteen minutes. Shortly after this the host who had seated us walked past our table while seating another couple near by. He realized we still had no drinks and immediately apologized, promising to get our server immediately. A couple minutes later a server finally appeared and took the drink order of the family who had also been waiting but had been there much less time than us, and the server still did not acknowledge us except to stare blankly at our table with a scowl pasted to her face. At this point we decided to leave as wed been sitting for close to forty five minutes without even a glass of water! While we were leaving a third waiter came around and announced to the tables in the area hed been asked to come help out and asked what could he do. Still no drinks, no personal greeting to our table, no staff or management to explain why wed been ignored by staff that were standing around chatting in a not busy restaurant. Please save yourself the time and aggravation. Do not waste your money overpaying for terrible service. There are many other high quality restaurants with friendly and efficient staff around. As someone who was worked as both a server and bartender before I am disgusted by the apathy and terrible customer service offered here.

I was the first of my party of six to show up. I went to the front desk and asked for a table for 6. I was told it would be a 30-minute wait. I looked around the restaurant, which was not busy at all and I asked why. I did take into account the back room that was not in my view. I was greeted with three reasons: 1) They were short-staffed; 2) Their party rooms were full; and 3) They were closing at 10. It was 8:30. I told the hostess I would see how my friends felt when they arrived. She then told me she could fit us into a big U-shaped booth. We decided the booth would work and were told, "Ummmm, okay, its going to be a couple minutes." We sat in the waiting area for 10 minutes, another party had come in and was seated, when she comes up to me and says, "Its going to be another 20-30 minutes." Again, I asked her why. She said, "We have a couple parties going on and our kitchen is backed up." I told her we were done and we left. This is common at this restaurant. The attitude that comes from the hostess stand is mind-boggling to me. All of my friends have experienced this on separate occasions, too. I love the food here, but the employees attitudes are ridiculous and tonight was the last straw. You have two parties, your short-staffed, but if you are a professional in the restaurant business you figure out a way to accommodate every party that walks through that door. They missed out on probably a $200 table tonight, simply because they did/do not know how to address such a situation. Your goal as a restaurant is to have people come and spend their money; you ran into a snag and you did not handle it correctly.

I went to Granite City a few months ago and found the service horrible! Everyone from the front hostess station to the manager (management overall) were totally inept. Although we had reservations, we waited for 40 minutes even though several tables remain empty the entire time!! I went back last weekend and had basically the same experience. We did not have reservations and went to the bar area where we ran into a number of people who had waited for a table for 1 1/2+ hours (after being told it would be 40 minutes) Again, there were several tables in both the dining room and bar area that were empty for over 30 minutes. The front desk had no idea what was going on, and used the "your table is being setup now" answer repeatedly - several times to the same people! (We ended up not waiting to be seated and just sat down at a table in the bar that had stood empty for 30 minutes.) Once seated the food AND drinks took forever to arrive. Our waiter apologized numerous times on just the length of time it took to get a glass of wine!! It is obvious that who ever owns this establishment has no idea how to run a restaurant. People were asking to speak to the manager constantly, but the manager was of no help - just seemed annoyed with the patrons. If you pulled a random group of people off the street and told them to run a busy restaurant for the evening- the result would be Granite City!

7/7/17: Get there 5:40. Sign outside says happy hour 3-7 M-F. 5:45 ask waitress about happy hour, says it is over and I say your sign says 7. Apparently it has changed to 6 which we were still refused happy hour. Gets worse, our waitress (Ashley) only drops off one of our drinks and disappears, takes forever with the second drink and someone else brings it. Food took a while and again someone else brings it. Walks by doesnt check on us, have to reach out and get her attention for another beer. Happy Hour lies were one thing, terrible service afterwards was inexcusable. A little humor at the end is the feedback phone number and website printed on the receipt dont work! In all fairness, food was decent and with better service we would be back. We also let the front desk (4 employees) know their happy hour times are posted wrong and that even despite that we were advised it was over 15 min prior.. They apologized and will probably do nothing about it. Id be pleased if they at least corrected the posted hours. But really.. If you own/manage this place and youve read this and half the stuff on here you have major service issues. Ive served and bartended. I know when servers are actually busy vs. non attentive/dont care. This was the latter and would seem it is to be expected here. Also praying I dont get sick like a few reviews mention? Ill be sure to update this review tonight if we have issues.
