We had their loaded potato chips to start. They were very good, loaded with toppings. We opted to split their sampler platter so we could try a few of the different meats. We had the brisket, pulled pork, and smoked wings. All were very good and full of flavor. The meats are a bit on the expensive side. You wont really find any under $15. The other reason for the ding down to 4 stars is their confusing gluten free labeling. The pulled chicken is labeled gluten free on the menu but the waitress informed us that it really is not as it is marinated in their house BBQ sauce. Which brings me to my next point... The only gluten free BBQ sauce is their Carolina Gold sauce, which is the worst one they have, its very unbalanced and vinegar/mustard heavy with almost no sweetness. The others are all delicious, full of flavor, and well balanced. If the reason their sauces are not gluten-free is because they use soy sauce in them, I would highly suggest switching to the Tamari-style gluten free soy. It only costs a few cents more and allows you to make gluten free BBQ sauce. Unfortunately, with my girlfriend having celiac disease we will be unable to return as the Carolina Gold sucks for her only option.

My husband and I decided tonight to go to Barrel & Boar in Newark, however we ended up not eating and leaving after 30 minutes with no service. It started when we walked in, the hostess was taking an order but didnt even turn to look at us and nod or acknowledge our existence, 5 minutes go by, the manager walks up stands at the end of the counter waits there for a few minutes then walks away also not acknowledging us or the couple that walked in behind us waiting to get seated. After that it took an additional five minutes before we were acknowledged and finally able to sit. Once we were seated, the table next to us ordered appetizers and had them brought out to their table, as well as being informed brisket and ribs werent available and we hadnt even had a server come to our table to get our drink order. After another 5 minutes of waiting we decided that we werent waiting any longer especially when we werent even going to be able to order what we wanted and left. This being our first time there and waiting for 30 minutes with no service, wasnt an experience that will make us come back any time soon.

I am telling everyone I know to go here. My fiance and I visited this restaurant for the first time to celebrate our engagement and its safe to say EVERY employee here went above and beyond. We have both worked in the service industry for years and this is hands down the best service Ive ever experienced. All we talked about for the rest of the night was how awesome everyone was. From the host, to our server, to the two managers that visited our table, to the server for the next table over. Seriously awesome. I suppose I should mention the food, since this is a restaurant. You will NOT be disappointed. My fiance is a HUGE BBQ fan of every kind and he was blown away. Loaded Barrel Chips are to die for, and if youre a fan of spice you have to get the Spicy Bacon Mac & Cheese. Pulled Chicken in Sauce and Smoked Kielbasa were my favorites. We left this place and purchased a gift card to give to my fiances parents for Christmas, because everyone needs to eat here. Seriously, visit this place and tell all of your friends, family, strangers you pass on the street to do the same!!!

We spoke with Barrel & Boar about hosting our rehearsal dinner after our previously booked rehearsal dinner venue fell through. We were less than a month away from the wedding, but Stan and Erica still got us in for a meeting and food tasting the week we first contacted them. They were very excited about the opportunity to host our rehearsal dinner and very proactive helping us figure out the details. They made the process very easy for us. We arrived for the rehearsal dinner and they surprised us by providing more space for our rehearsal dinner guests than we had previously agreed upon, which was amazing. The BBQ buffet was delicious. The staff was very attentive to our guests and did a great job handling the drink tickets for our friends and family. We highly recommend Barrel & Boar for any rehearsal dinner or similar event. We will definitely be dining there again in the future.

Me and my Wife entered on a Saturday, mid afternoon we were seated by the bartender after swatting at some gnats. The decor was inviting and unique to a BBQ establishment, took quite some time after ordering water to get our order placed, took well over 20min when the place was a 1/3rd of way packed. I ordered the sampler Slider to experience a multitude of BBQ meats offered and a side of mac and cheese, wife ordered the chicken tenders. Our food arrived surprisingly fast except I had to call over the waiter for my side order of mac an cheese that was cold. Slider buns as well as the meats were dry, I found myself scrambling to put and all of the sauces to try to get my meals down, much to my dismay half the bottles of BBQ sauce was unlabeled and were practically the same flavor. All in all a nice building but service is as dry and unresponsive as the slider buns.

Not sure where the rest of these people were eating, but Holy Smoke BBQ is a great place for BBQ. They have newly remodeled their restaurant, so now they have a bar. You can pick the food up to go or you can dine in. I have always had amazing service and the food has never failed either. The pulled pork sandwich is one of my favorites and the copious amount of tasty sides makes its hard to choose a favorite. They offer local brews which is a nice change and much needed after a long day at work. I felt the need to give them a 5 star because the rest of the reviews dont represent this place properly. Im sure they think City BBQ is the greatest thing since sliced bread, so that should explain their views.

A co-worker and I each had big meals - full racks of ribs (buck a rib), mac&cheese, beans, potatoes, and slaw. I thought it was better than average, the ribs were well seasoned and the sides were fresh. Im going again tonight - taking my wife. Im not sure why some of the reviews are so harsh. Both in person and on the phone the staff has been polite. Im not big on leaving reviews, but when I was looking for the address I saw the critical reviews and felt there needed to be some balance. I found out about the place by word of mouth, as did the guy who told me. Its tasty! Ambiance? Okay, nothing special, but its a rib joint, who cares about the decor? Again... tasty!

MMmmmmm..... this was fantastic. Great BBQ and great hospitality. Came in here Sunday for a quick lunch with a buddy and didnt even realize they offer brunch. However, I stuck with the main menu. I got the Kansas city burnt ends. I really enjoyed the bun they put this on and it was really good. Just not the way I like my burnt ends. I prefer them to be rendered down a little more than they had them here, other than that, they were good. I also had the spicy bacon mac & cheese. It was good, but nothing too special to write home about. I do like the fact they keep local brews on tap and they have a good selection. Ill have to come back and do brunch sometime.
