I arrived with my family to this restaurant to be told that they didnt carry high chairs because they werent aloud to store them. My husband actually went next door and borrowed one from the restaurant adjacent to them. I first noticed that the menu was very limited. I believe, if you have a small menu, then what you offer should be done exceptionally well. Not here. I ordered a Cosmo which tasted nothing like a Cosmo and was barely drinkable. I was told later by the waitress that it was the first one she had ever made. Note to chef: dont let inexperienced people make any food or drink. I asked for water for our table 3 times before I received it. I was given a litany of things that they had run out of. I think about 35% of the menu was unavailable. I ordered rice for my children. I was told they had green rice or black rice. I asked the difference and the waitress could not give me any information other that the black rice "might scare the children". I cant even begin to describe the flat affect of the waitress. I ordered 2 entrees, California roll, & miso soup. The waitress forgot to put in half our order. So after waiting to receive our entire order, we received California rolls which consisted of avocado, rice, & crab salad (mayonnaise & everything!). Beyond the less than appetizing concoction, the sushi was rolled too large. The side of soy was in a dish that was so small you couldnt even dip the sushi in it. The miso was not miso. I dont know what it was, but it was not miso. It had tofu & mushrooms in it, but that was as close as it got. Both entrees were tasteless. Needless to say, we were very disappointed in the service and the food. Then after all this, you walk out with an extremely overpriced bill. I wouldnt have paid $5 let alone the $76 I was charged. Ridiculous! Dont waste your time or money. This was so bad. The only plus was it had nice decor. It is misleading to say they have patio seating. They just put 2 tables outside their front door on the sidewalk. So, in general, if you can BYO food, drink, & highchair, this is a great restaurant.

This was the second time my boyfriend and I ate here. The first time, the food and service was excellent. Tonight, we went there for my birthday and were very disappointed in the service. The food was good but it took an hour to get our main courses. (The restaurant was not busy) Other tables who arrived after us received their food before us and our waiter never came near us so that we could inquire why our dinner was taking so long. We asked another server, who made many excuses about why our food hadnt arrived. Our server never came over once we were served or asked how our food was or whether we needed anything during our entire meal. It was interesting that our server was the most attentive when it was time to give us our check. We are not sure if we will return after this negative experience.

Who could ask for anything more. My wife an I love eating out, we travel to the near west side often for good food from real chefs. Now we have Chef Matt at Umami. We are so happy a hip, adventurous place finally came all the way out east. The decor, the soundtrack, the menu, it all works. The service is brilliant, our waitress Nikki was engaging and very well versed with Umamis offerings. We have gone a few times now and have yet to come away disappointed. Its good to finally have an eating destination in Chagrin Falls.

Amazing restaurant! First visit tonight and I cant wait to go back to try more. The sushi was delicious and wonderfully fresh. Be sure to get to goat cheese dumplings. Theyre unbelievable! I really enjoyed my scallops but the tuna was even better! Great service - super attentive and made great recommendations. I could not have asked for more. So good!

The go to place for my wife and I in the Chagrin Valley. You feel as if youre in a big city with a hidden gem. Chic atmosphere, great service and a wonderful chef come together for an outstanding experience. Seasonal menus, fresh ingredients ....what else can I say? Thanks for bringing some creativity to the East side.

Intimate setting, with tables for two, brick walls, a huge piece of slate with the specials written on it, easy view into the cooking area. Service was attentive. Food was creative (the vegetarian egg rolls were like a tempura batter - delicious), goat cheese dumplings, pompano....desserts were fabulous. Would recommend!

We have now been to Umami a few times and always left feeling that we just had the most healthy food. The food is very tasty and the dishes are truly artistic. We could feel the chefs caring in every bite. We plan to go back many many times. We are thankful we live close by.

We loved Umami! The sushi was excellent (we like the real raw fish, not rolls, and they did it well). The highlight was beef udon noodles - we shared an entree and the flavor was awesome. Id recommend a reservation if you are going at a busy time.
