Went for Valentines Day and had their pricey ($65pp) prix fixe, 4 course dinner with beverage pairing ($40pp). 1st course: I had the endive salad, she had the oysters Rockefeller. The salad was unexciting and one of the oysters had chipped shells in them. 2nd course: I had shrimp scampi, she had a raw honey comb with goat cheese. The tagliatelle was al dente and the shrimp was fresh and well-prepared. The honey comb and goat cheese were flavorful and delicious. 3rd course: I had diver scallops, she had boeuf bourguignon. The scallops were large, plump and fresh, gently seared and soft, not rubbery. 2 of them had an annoying amount of grit (after the shells in the oysters, I surmised the sous chef was moving too quick in the kitchen). The boeuf bourguignon was tender and melted in your mouth. 4th course: petit four. They were right sized and very tasty. Beverages: the cocktails were pricey but tasty, they use quality liquor. The pairings were well done. Especially enjoyed the Outer Banks Ice wine for the appertif. They also have a selection of very tasty tea (they were out of my first choice, someone mustve forgot to restock going into VD) Overall: i get that Valentines Day is a busy night, I think more attention to detail was needed to justify the price. Our server remembered our order in reverse and served my courses to my wife. Also, my cocktail was cleared before i finished. I made mention of the gritty scallops and expected either a visit from the front of the house manager or an apology from the server; Received neither. The seating layout was a little odd. While we seated at a decent table, there were several tables that flanked huge columns that plunged diners into the paths of traffic. There were also many misspellings on the menu "Scampie", "petite four" stick out in my mind. While the experience was enjoyable overall, i feel for the $300 check, I think they couldve done better. Maybe on an average day it would be a different experience but, I am not sure if I will be back.

Lets start with the good. Young lady who was hosting was kind, professional and did a nice job. Second server again kind, professional and attentive. Place is beautifully done as well. Lets go to the bad... food was middle of the road. I ordered a fillet medium rare it came out cut through the middle (to check temp?), one portion of the cut seemed off (it was perhaps unintentionally frozen?) and it was a over cooked in sections (it was just sort of a mess). My wife did the muscles and they tasted so so however she ended up very sick that evening (that said with any suspected food born illness these things are difficult to pinpoint but we left at 650pm she was very ill from 8pm through the following day). I ordered a soda it tasted funky (maybe Im being picky here but Im just being honest) as if either the lines on the machine are not clean or perhaps they have very hard water (may have been the ice rather than the soda but regardless something wasnt right)? They have a number of positive reviews but honestly I travel extensively throughout the north east and on the west coast having the luxury of frequenting many fine dining spots this place (based on this single experience so take it for what it is) would never make it back on my todo list or cut it when Im entertaining a client. I hope my experience was unique and they hit it out of the park ongoing.

Just had dinner there with friends. The bar is great and they pour great drinks. Regarding dinner....thats a totally different story. The menu is very limited, both from an hors doeuvres and dinner standpoint. Anyway, we ordered dinner and were enjoying the atmosphere. Dinner arrived and everything was correct except my meal. They brought the wrong cut of steak. They took my meal back and quickly delivered the right cut of meat that was barely cooked. I sent it back and asked for the manager. In the meantime, three others in the party that ordered steak realized their steak was way undercooked, and only ate a few bites. Management brought additional hors doeuvres in place of the steak I sent back, but by that point of the evening it was too little too late. When I spoke to the manager, I was completely underwhelmed with his response. Long story short, I used to work in the Reynolds Building and still work in the Plaza Building next door. I enjoyed seeing the old building, but the food and service, all the way from the waiter, the kitchen and the management leave a lot to be desired (not to mention the prices). I never actually ate dinner, since by the time my steak would have been properly cooked, everyone else at the table would have been ready to go. I see no reason to eat at this Resturant ever again...or at least until their reviews are better.

Really great food, really terrible service. This is not the first time I have been disappointed at this supposedly high end spot. We were originally just having drinks at the bar, but planned to order some food. I specifically asked a bartender if we need to close our tabs at the bar before taking a seat at on of the open seating/community tables. He told me NO, that we could just sit down and they would transfer the bill. After being ignored for several minutes at our new table, a bartender/server (unsure if he was cut out for either) aggressively stood at the head of the table and stared at us. He apparently was upset that our tabs were not settled at the bar beforehand. He proceeded to be terrible at his job until we asked that someone else take care of us. After our food arrived (which we had to order at the bar, because no one came over to help us), we had to ask for silverware to be brought. After an extended time with still no spoon for a French onion soup, we helped ourselves from the stash that was actually kept just three feet away. Bottom line--If the Katharine wants to be a classy, high end establishment, they need to search for a higher caliber wait staff.

Friday night dinner with business colleagues and my wife. We did not have a good experience. The flounder "special" was not special at all. Needed additional seasoning, not to mention that the whole plate looked like one big white blob. Steak was burned on one side. Cheese plate was sparse and half melted when we got it. Cesar salad was way under-dressed and the lettuce tasted like it hadnt been fully washed. I would not go to this restaurant at all. Drinks were good and our server was pleasant and attentive, but the food was really bad. And pricey. They better get their act together. Pricey restaurants with bad food dont usually last very long.

Good food and great service. Server brought complimentary champagne on arrival for birthday celebration. Appetizers of french onion soup, escargot and Caesar salad were spot on. Main entrees of beef bourguignon and wild NC trout with brown butter soft were fabulous. Service was attentive and appropriate. Only complaints are that bread was a food service baguette, when they could either make their own bread or obtain fresh from Milners bakery just down the street. Also, the creme brulee was a delicious, but runny puddle. For being one of the more expensive restaurants in Winston-Salem, there is no excuse for food service bread or flopped desserts.
