A true diamond in the rough for great Sushi. Akashi is a small place on High Point rd. in Greensboro near the Coliseum. It is a small and unassuming building, but do not let that stop you. While the building and decor may be a bit dated, the food and service inside is the best you will find. I recently tried Akashi for sushi at lunch. I sat at the bar where the owner and sushi chef, Suji (Soo-jee), recommended the lunch sushi special. I ordered it, and he asked me if there was anything I liked in particular, or did not like. I told him I enjoy a variety, and there is nothing I wont eat. While he prepared my sushi, the meal came with a standard appetizer salad of mixed greens and ginger dressing. When the sushi was ready, I was blown away at the portion! 12 pieces of Makizushi (rolled sushi) and 6 pieces of Nigirizushi (fresh seafood cuts over rice) for just $9.50. That is an incredible value in this area. The wasabi he served with it was clearly fresh. There was no dried out quality to it, and it was very pungent. The Nigiri included fresh tuna, salmon, octopus, shrimp, crab, and eel. While dining, I got to know Suji, as the restaurant was not very busy while the area colleges are out for the summer. I come to learn he has been a sushi chef for nearly 30 years. He was interested in what I do, and we had a good conversation while I ate. He clearly knows what it takes to keep someone coming back on their lunch break. I will certainly be back. Other than sushi, they serve standard hibachi fare for lunch, as well as more authentic Japanese cuisine, for prices that are lower than other similar places in the area. I highly endorse Akashi for anyone looking to fill up on expertly crafted sushi for a reasonable price.

One of the hallmarks of authentic sushi is that rice is seasoned with fish-stock, sugar, and vinegar. Theirs was most definitely not seasoned at all, with just plain rice. Flavor was off by a mile. The rolls were a little loose and uneven, a sign of someone who is just learning how to make sushi. I should know- It looked like the first rolls I ever made. Rainbow roll was inexpensive. Now I know why, What they served would not be recognized as a rainbow roll anywhere else on the planet. It is normally a California roll with tuna, salmon, avocado, and shrimp wrapped most of the way around it. They re-wrap it with plastic wrap, and roll it again for a smooth solid appearance. This had some sort of tempura thing in it, not a California roll, and was rough-hewn with small thick chunks of fish on top. Not sure why they would have put eel on a rainbow roll. Appearance was awful. Thought they might have given me a dragon roll by accident, but others at our table who ordered rainbow roll got the same weird thing. Service was very odd. We all ordered dinners together. They brought the dinners to the table one at a time. I finished mine, and the last plate was delivered to another in our party 20 minutes later. On the positive side, we left full and the beer was cheap.

First time leaving a bad review and a review in general. The sushi was warm and overly fishy tasting. I only ate one piece of each roll and I didnt enjoy any of them. (Tuna, yellowtail, and salmon roll). I order the same thing at EVERY sushi place I go to and this was off and nasty. When I asked if I could order something else, a lady came out and yelled at me that "I dont know how to order sushi." The waitress let me order something else and I very much enjoyed it! But the lady came back out and harassed me for ordering shrimp tempura. I told her the conversation was inappropriate and I didnt want to have the conversation. She only left when I shut down the confrontation and gave her nothing to say. The waitress gave us our bill and we left. The lady came OUTSIDE and harassed me again for "not knowing how to order sushi." Two other guests left when they saw how we were treated. They took down our license plate (not sure why, we paid our bill) and we left. The waitress was SO nice but the lady running the place is rude. Im not sure why she came back to the table to yell at me again, I felt like I was being provoked. Do not go here.

Pleasantly delicious food; simple, clean, and efficient Japanese atmosphere; service so kind and caring that it was refreshing - you could tell they appreciate your business and take pride in their food and establishment. I got Hibachi Chicken and hot sake. The chicken had the best flavoring I have ever tasted hibachi style and cooked to perfection. I didnt even want to dip it in the white sauce because I was scared it would ruin it. Im glad I did though. They have really perfected their craft. My salad was fresh and crispy. The Miso souo was hot but not scaulding. The sake was great. After reading the reviews, I was skeptical but took a chance. Ill be going back this week, bringing friends, and Ill be bringing my family here regularly when we relocate here in the summer. I travel in and out of Greensboro weekly. I have been many places, all of the favorites that locals will tell you to try. This one never made the list. After tonight, this is my favorite restaurant in Greensboro to date. If you are traveling in on business, this is a MUST try. I cant say enough good things.

Horrible service--would not return. I went out with a party of six to Akashi, ordered some sushi, and proceeded to wait 2 hours for all our meals to arrive. To make matters more awkward, some of the sushi came out pretty quickly (20-30 minutes) while some orders simply never came. Other patrons came and went, while we waited glumly for the rest of our food to be prepared. At the end of the long evening when we asked about the slow service, the owner quickly got irate with us about how we should have called ahead and we shouldnt expect a table of six to get their food from the kitchen so quickly. Id understand if the place was packed, but on a slow Saturday night having to awkwardly sit with sushi in front of me for an hour while waiting for others to be served, and then getting yelled at by the manager for doing so was completely outrageous. All in all, it was a pretty big letdown given all the high praise Ive heard about this place. In the end the food seemed ok, but by the time we were finally served we all just wanted to leave.

I have some different views from the bad reviews here. If you are a Southern, Greensboro local who has a concept of Jap food = sushi, you may not like this place that much. Therere many other Jap restaurants having warm, waterly, salty, and/or crispy sushi that attract American taste in town. I am from Eastern Asia and have traveled to Japan seven times. More than anything, Udon noodle in this restaurant is the only authentic and the best one in Greensboro (sorry, noodles at all other Jap places suck). Udon comes with fresh, seasonal vegies in a hot pot that keeps it warm. Not even pricey, it was around $9-11. The restaurant is super clean as well, I randomly touched tables and shelves and there was zero dust, surprisingly. The sushi chef is definitely not a native Jap (like all other restaurants) so the taste of sushi is just alright, but try Udon if you have some sense of Urban Asian food. Its just great especially in cold/rainy seasons.
