I went to Blue Corn Cafe for the first time on Saturday night (day before Valentines day, really slow since everyone would be going out the next night) around 8:30 at night, after the dinner rush. First bad thing, my boyfriend and I waited about 10 minutes to be seated but the restaurant was empty. I had a hard time deciding what to choose so I just asked the waiter to bring me a beef dish that was his favorite - I figured the servers would know what tastes the best. First we ordered the queso and spinach, TASTELESS. My "steak" also had NO flavor - I could have been eating cardboard, it wouldnt have tasted any different. I had to put salt all over everything just to taste anything. The meat was also way overcooked. My boyfriends chicken quesadillas though were OK -- not fabulous, just better compared with my tasteless entree. I ate about half my beef and boxed the rest up. The meat was so bland that when I gave it to my dog later he appeared to not know what it was. Go around the corner to Cosmic Cantina instead.

We were excited for date night and should have stuck by our initial impulse to go out for sushi. Should have also trusted my gut when we walked in and noticed the dirty floor and general disrepair of the inside of this place. Mojito was served with mint leaves which were brown and when asked the waitress was told that this is "normal."The queso resembled something you would find in a ballpark-no flavor whatsoever. My margarita had salt when I asked for none. The entrees were also disappointing and bland. I had to use salt which I have probably done once in the past year-I am not a salt user. My side of sour cream never came, and I had truly given up at this point to bother asking again. The waitress seemed to not really care about her customers. The plantain appetizer was the shining point so get these if you read the other reviews and are convinced you should try this place. Then come write a review and warn others to stay away like I am doing!

My first time eating at blue corn cafe was wednesday night. A few coworkers and myself went there to celebrate one of our staff members moving on to a new practice. At first it seemed well, the prices on pitchers were very expensive but the sangria was very good, appetizer (chips and queso) was good as well. I ordered the chicken quesadilla, I thought it tasted funny so I really didnt eat much, three other coworkers ordered the same thing as I did. Service was so-so, over all wasnt to bad of an experience until I woke up at 2:30am vomiting. Come to find out the other 3 staff members that had ordered the same as me all agreed the food tasted weird and all got sick after leaving the restaurant. I threw up everything I had in my system and had to miss work the next day. So i would say just be careful what you eat there, and DONT GET THE QUESADILLA!

Very disappointed. I ordered the Cuban Picadillo because of the menu description. It tasted like a mild chili, good, but only ONE raisin in the whole bowl and no signs of the capers or olives in the menu description. They had no creamer for the coffee, only 2% milk. We arrived early and ordered drinks - waitress offered some chips while we waited which she brought with a very mild salsa. I was shocked to see that we had been charged for what we thought were complimentary chips. When I later saw chips had a charge on the menu....it showed a choice of several salsas - she never even offered us a choice. When I mentioned any of this to her, she just shrugged her shoulders and took my credit card. I didnt make a fuss because didnt want to embarass my guest, but we will never return there.

Very disappointing. Service was just ok: gruff waiter was otherwise acceptable. No smiles, but got the job done. Handled my complaints well. But I felt from the very beginning that he was an unhappy person. Food was really hit or miss. We had one salsa (the chipotle) which was just nasty tasting. And then my steak dish was rank. I mean it tasted and smelled like it had spoiled. I could not eat more than a bite. Nearly retched. The other food served was not bad, and when I complained about my steak, they replaced it with a good ropa vieja with apologies. We had five in our group and at the end they had added a 20% tip and claimed they did that on all parties 5 or more. That sounded like B-S to me. I would NOT recommend this place.

Just visited for the first time after hearing good reviews. The Plantains and Chicken was a surprising success. The surprise being how the various flavors worked so well together. The offerings in general are far from the basic menu items of other "Mexican" or "Southwest" restaurants which is a big plus in my book. The menu is also well attuned to those with specific dietary concerns (vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, etc.) and it appears a number of items on the menu can be adapted to meet those concerns. The wait staff was very friendly & attentive yet not over-attentive & smothering one finds at establishments where they try too hard. Definitely recommend the Blue Corn Cafe.

After a long day visiting with family and shopping we decided to try out the Blue Corn Cafe. What a mistake. The service was great as we had two little ones with us and they were very helpful with assisting us to the table. I asked the waitress what to order and she indicated that the stuffed poblano peppers was a favorite. My sister ordered the black bean tortas which was equally as disappointing as the peppers dish. Needless to say we had to stop and get food else where after leaving. Even the kids began to throw the food on the floor as they typically enjoy rice and beans. I would not recommend anyone dine out at Blue Corn Cafe please be advised.

Truly, excellent service, great fun atmosphere and super yummy food. Blue Corn really outdoes itself with its offerings- from the presentation of the food, to the uniqueness to the taste. Chips are yummy with a variety of homemade salsas, and the plantain sampler is a great appetizer. Their dinners are so complete and each item has a great unique flavor- everything from their black beans to their mashed sweet potatoes. All authentic ingredients and homemade sauces. Definitely not your average "Mexican" restaurant and a true Durham gem.

Food was great. The pork chops I ordered melted off the bone. Chips and salsa hit the spots while waiting for the main course. Limited draft selection . Wine and cocktails are available too including flights of tequila. Was worried about finding parking but got lucky with a parallel parking spot on the street. Sounds like if you wait until 6pm (or was it 7pm) you can park in the lot that right across the street for free.

Blue Corn catered our employee appreciation meal for 75 of our temporary employees. They were a huge hit. The food was fantastic. They arrived on time and set-up quick. You could tell a lot of care and pride went into the food. Their staff is amazing, always seeking to go above and beyond when serving their customers. I eat at their restaurant once a week as well. Everything about this place is top notch.
