I have never reviewed anything on Yelp before but I recently had such a bad, if brief, experience at this place that I feel compelled to post about it. I tried meeting a friend at this place for a quick Guinness after dinner before I was going to go across the street to the Wescott Theater. At the door, the guy handed me back my ID in a clumsy manner and it fell onto the floor. Some very rude man in charge came over and told me I was too intoxicated and was not allowed in. I was most certainly not intoxicated at all. He dismissively waved his hand in my face, telling me "Youre done". He repeated the gesture and phrase several times. He had a miserable, sneering scowl and was very disrespectful. Even if he did for some reason wrongly assume something (maybe the beard?) he definitely could have been handled the situation with a little more class. The situation was more confusing than anything, being that I just walked into the door 5 seconds earlier only to have some very rude person declare that Im some sort of scumbag. I walked across the street and told somebody standing in line at the theater what just happened. He said, "Yeah they are a bunch of jerks". Let it be known. ps... That Indian restaurant across the street rules. I recommend the coconut soup. Ciao.

As a Syracuse native who has lived in the Westcott neighborhood for nearly a decade I avoid this place and have no idea how it manages to stay open, to the point that Ive wondered if its just a money laundering front. The bouncer is always extremely rude, and has on more occasions than I can count accused myself and others with me of being too intoxicated when we walk in cold sober, and threatened to physically remove us when we politely protest. Considering there never seem to be more than three pathetic old barflies buzzing around even on a Friday night I have no idea how this extremely unprofessional policy doesnt put them out of business. The few times Ive gotten past the front door Ive found the decor to be dated (not "vintage", dated like a cheap motel) and the rest of the staff to be as unpleasant and as uninterested in earning my money as the jerk at the door. There is nothing special about their drink selection, if you want a cheap local brew and some basic human dignity you cant go wrong with Beer Belly Deli across the street. Honestly Id even recommend the super-cramped bar at Alto Cinco over this cesspit. Neither of them are anywhere near as college-y as the campus bars and have more class in their dumpsters than Taps does.

First off, as soon as I walked in the bar I was told that I could not wear my hat backwards because they had a policy to thwart "suspected gang members" from entering the property. Apparently they profile every person in a blue, white or red tank top or those with backwards facing hats as thugs who cannot enter their establishment. Mind you Im a law student who was in a button down shirt and a college hat and a pair of blue jeans. Not only are their policies discriminatory, but they are highly offensive. I would not recommend this bar to anyone, especially the average student who wants to feel as if this is a safe space. I have never experienced anything like this in my entire life and am completely appalled by the lack of professionalism and shame this business made me feel as soon as I walked in the door. They wonder why this bar was almost empty on a Friday night and I believe the discriminatory vibe might have something to do with it. Do yourself a favor and take your business elsewhere.

Just an FYI, Im a white guy that goes to Taps regularly, and they always ask for 2 forms of ID from me, and I know lots of other people that have the same happen to them. So take that for whatever its worth. My experiences there have always been really good. Its a neighborhood bar, but its cheap, bartender is usually friendly, and I usually run into people I know there. Its not dodgy, its just not a haven for yuppies.

I dont about the other reviewers who have had bad experiences with Taps. I have been here about 20 times in the past two years and never had a bad experience. Well its a dive bar and you get what you pay for. $2 beer, free popcorn, couple arcade shooting games, $1.25/rack pool, darts, jukebox, et al. This is your typical neighborhood hang out bar and have loved the chilled atmosphere here.

Super friendly staff, free popcorn, pool, darts, and some of the only cheap beer on tap on Westcott. Not sure what the complaints about the unfriendliness are about. Weve been in there multiple times and the staff is always extremely friendly. The racism accusation seems even weirder, considering Ive seen people all across the skin color spectrum working there.

Attempted to walk in with my service dog. Employees told me he couldnt come in. Showed id for him (which is illegal to ask me to show) and explained what he is for (panic disorder and ptsd) and the guy told me he couldnt risk someone having a panic attack inside. Nice that they treat people like this.

They have $2 PBR on tap. Local family owned bar. No food served other than snacks. Minority owned, so Im not sure what the race stuff is about. Free popcorn.

Great place to catch a game. Nice and quiet, not rowdy like a lot of these "college kid with a fake ID" focused places. Nice to actually be around adults.

I double the racist incident. Very non welcoming atmosphere. Its cold literally and metaphorically. Will never go there again.
